Did Killzone 2 Ultimately Fail?

Its a good thing that you can read the first paragraph on N4G in order not to give websites easy, controversial, flamebait hits.

Agree...this guy is probably worse than HHG for that!

Did Killzone 2 fail? For gamers? No, far from it...and that's all I care about..

"if you consider Sony's main aim for Killzone 2 was to move massive numbers of PlayStation 3's into peoples houses - then one can begin to ponder over it's actual 'success'"

Where did sony say KZ2 wa s going to move massive PS3 numbers??

links anyone?

oh yea just another ridiculous article about nothing.

dronde6149d ago

I think it's safe to say that Killzone 2 is a great game, scratch that - it's an outstanding game, everything from the visuals to the online multiplayer are absolutely stunning, I can't get enough of it. but if you look at things from a wider spectrum, you might wonder to yourself: Did Killzone 2 ultimately fail?

Now, before you misinterpret what I mean by 'fail' here, let me say that as a game there's no way Sony's shooter is a fail of a game, no matter how hard people try to deflect or avoid the truth with useless garbage like "Killzone 2 is a generic shooter" or "Killzone 2 is just another shooter" the point stands strong, Killzone 2 is a great game, it doesn't fail in that regard but, if you consider Sony's main aim for Killzone 2 was to move massive numbers of PlayStation 3's into peoples houses - then one can begin to ponder over it's actual 'success'

Over the release period of Killzone 2 and even till now, the PS3 hasn't really gained massive numbers, it's selling well mind you, but come one -- This is Sony's behemoth exclusive shooter we have all been hyping since E3 2005, and yet the sale of consoles hasn't been affected all that much.
Numerous reasons are to blame, but the one in the forefront would be Sony's totally crippled marketing system, but that's a whole other story in itself.

In conclusion, while Killzone 2 is a great game and everything it was expected to be, ( just look at the glowing reviews for assurance) It hasn't achieved what Sony wanted, it hasn't shipped millions of PS3 consoles as expected, but I guess we'll need to give the game a chance, give it more time and see if it has the effect Sony had hoped.

and bad ass gamer got tired of all the 360 is dead articles ?? wats up?

JsonHenry6149d ago

I liked the game. But then again, I played it for two weeks and, literally, have not touched it since.

Guess I am more of a Call of Duty player than a Killzone player.

JhawkFootball066149d ago

If you put it in terms of sales, with all the hype around it at pre-launch, it failed.

If you put it into a gamers perspective, it broaden the community and expanded the amount of detail we see in games on consoles. If you talk about games with the best graphics, Uncharted 2, Gears, Fight Night, you can certaintly put Killzone 2 with those games. And I think that, that is a certain accomplishment, not only for gamers, but also for the creator

I love video games6149d ago

it didnt fail really but for me it did cause i hated it.

sack_boi6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

No they didn't get tired of "X360 is dead articles". They're just doing the same thing HipHopGamer does: which is using flamebait articles, headlines to attract attention, get hits.

IdleLeeSiuLung6149d ago

I don't think this game is considered a failure either from a gamer standpoint or commercial. It posted respectable sales number and although doesn't have new innovative game play elements is more than a gamers bliss.

What it failed at, is the incredible hype that Sony put out fueling the flames of fanbois everywhere for years. They started with this CGI (which they matched) of what the game would look like years ago giving gamers a hope and almost 4 years to discuss how awesome and incredible this game is. When sales doesn't match, what do you think is going to happen?

If you keep insinuating (i.e. screaming) wolf and there is no wolf, what do you think is going to happen?

On the flip side, the one game that did deliver in the sales and game department though with the incredible hype was MGS4.

Milky6149d ago

Killzone 2 fails at being a bad game. It also fails at selling less than a million in a month. Epic fail.

DragonWarrior_46149d ago

I was a huge COD player till I got into Killzone 2. Now im a Helgan.

RememberThe3576149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

Killzone 2 failed to move the units it was supposed to. But that is no fault to the game. That is all on Sony's shoulders. They didn't push the game enough, and sales fell short of expectations and even potential.

It kind of seems to me like this is SCE's way of saying to Sony Corp.: "Hey, we had this great game that we spent a ton of money on, and you didn't give us the money to push it. Now we're barely making our money back when we could have been making a ton."

I don't think SCEA had the funds to push Killzone 2 in the states where it could have performed at it's best. They have to consider Uncharted 2, Infamous, and MAG. Two of which are new IP's and need to get pushed hard to get people interested.

Instead of acting like sales don't matter, or like Killzone 2 sold way more then you thought it would, let just be real about it. Killzone 2 is a great game, but Sony failed to push it to the success it could of had.

sack_boi6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

Why do people care so much about sales?
Seriously Killzone 2 sold "only" 1+ million in about 2 months, so what? That's 20+ million PS3 gamers that are missing on this great game, I feel sorry for them.
Games like Heavy Rain, Infamous, Uncharted, Little Big Plant, God of War 3, M.A.G may not sell over a million the first 24 hours but that doesn't take anything away from the games.
Especially since most of the people here on N4G are well informed about games.
Let Sony keep bring the "good" games, I'll buy them, you'll buy them, that's all we should care about.

edgeofblade6149d ago

You know, I'm going to call Killzone 2 a sleeper hit. It's certainly an awesome game... but the hype on the front end and the fanboys really made me want to hate it. But now that I have come around, it's a hit. It hangs with the best.

But where it not for all the bullshit "best game EVAR" crap up front, I could have liked it from the get-go.

aksmashh6149d ago

Its Got The Best Graphics
Its Got A Amazing Multiplayer
Its Got Much Different Feel To The Rest
Its Got More Mentions Of N4G Then Any Other Game
But Didn't Sell That Well
How Does Matter To Any Of Us, Unless You've Got Shares In Sony (Your Probably F**ked AnyWay With The Recession)

360PR6149d ago

i love everything about the game, right up there with the best of them. the problem is that sony was hoping they would hit a home run with this game in terms of sales and how much units it would sell. if you think sony doesn't care about how much this game sells and how much ps3 it sells, your straight up stupid. the gaming business is just that for these companies, a business. they're in the business of making money. as a gamer, i think killzone lived up to the hype and is one of my fav games of all time. but from a business stand point, be honest with yourself, it didn't do what sony hoped it would do. yeah it sold a million world wide, but this was supposed to be ps3's biggest game and when you compare it to halo 3 which sold a million units in a couple of hours, your left thinking what gives?
now you can argue that the 360 has a bigger user base, but this isn't about the 360, it's about the ps3 and it's owners. how much ps3 owners are there right now? over 20 million? maybe more? whatever, point is, with all the hype it was generating on sites like this, one would think it was going sell a zillion copies. what happened?
i guess another argument could be that most ps3 are purchased as a blu ray player. i know the ps crowd hates hearing that just like the ms crowd hates hearing about the rrod, but when you put your fanboyism aside, you are left wondering why this game didn't sell better.
so did killzone 2 fail? as a game - no chance. as a product that's meant to sell, yeah it failed.

Tempist6149d ago

Hey, remember when KZ2 was suppose to drop in Feb of 2008 and then got delayed for a year. How about everyone who bought the PS3 in 2007 or Janurary of 2008 for Killzone 2. Would not the majority of consolse moved have been seen then?

Bottom line, is that it would be a tough call on consoles moved when there's a year's delay on the game. Not to mention I believe there were other games moving consoles. I don't think a person buys a PS3 solely on one game coming out, but a bunch of games released and to be released. Why are writers narrow minded about these facts when writing these articles?

DaTruth6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

If Sony felt that way, they would have put on a zillion commercials and had a soft drink for it! Clearly, Sony doesn't feel that way.

They probably feel like a million people will show their friends and then they can sell PS3's and Killzone 2 with minimal advertising dollars. Considering what they spent making it, this is likely the only way!

Killzone 2 failed alright. It fails at letting me play any other game since it released!

360PR6148d ago

Well,

DaTruth is i kinda agree with your comment. It does seem that sony hopes word of mouth will sell their games and thus far that hasn't been working for them. so i do agree they feel killzone owners will show their friends in hopes they would pick up the system and game.
as far as putting a zillion commercials and a soft drink for it..lol..well look what it did for halo 3 - it sold....alot, and that's the point. Do you actually think a company is happy when they spend millions on a product and it doesn't sell as they hoped it would? I really do hope killzone 2 goes on to sell as much as it deserves, but that's on ps3 owners.
And for people on here who don't think sales count, YOU ARE WRONG. I'm all for quality over quantity, but if you don't have sales, even though your product reeks of quality, you don't have sh!t.

pain777pas6148d ago

KZ2 is a amazing game plain and simple enough sales talk its ridiculous.

IdleLeeSiuLung6148d ago

Gamers shouldn't care about sales and go play video games. I'm interested out of pure curiosity.

However, sales affect sequels. Do you think we will get a sequel to Okami, Zak and Wiki or Mad World?

Now what is common about those three games? They are all on the Wii platform. Sooner or later, Wii games released in genres that tend to attract hardcore gamers will likely slow down. That might be the reason we continue to receive so few hardcore games already.

What do you think will happen with the PS3 if it consistently doesn't post good numbers?

I think the question should be why aren't PS3 gamers buying exclusives? Why aren't 1st party games selling better than 3rd party multi-platform games? Not if KZ2 failed or not, because there is a trend. Well received 1st party games only sell mediocre at best relative to reception and hype they receive.

no killzone 2 did not fail, why would gamers think it would fail? We are the ones who get to enjoy the game and its quality, even if it has not sold as much as people expected what does this mean for us? Do we get a slice of the money? No so shut it and just enjoy the games and let the game producers worry about how much it sells.

""I think it's safe to say that Killzone 2 is a great game, scratch that - it's an outstanding game, everything from the visuals to the online multiplayer are absolutely stunning, I can't get enough of it."

Thus, how did it fail?

Daishi6148d ago

Killzone 2 didn't fail gamers, gamers failed Killzone 2...

Phantom_T6149d ago

People hyped it so much.
People wanted Killzone 2 to be the be-all-and-end-all of First person shooters,They took Sony and GG's promise of making a outstanding game and twisted it.
Best game ever made? No.
Best FPS ever made? No.
But what it aimed to do,it did it perfectly.
Provide a fantastic game with fantastic gameplay,Ai,story and online.
What more could it have done?

sack_boi6149d ago (Edited 6149d ago )

Good comment Phantom. Bubble up

BTW the people that hyped the game up are the PS3 fanboys. The same people that hype up updates, etc.
Killzone 2 is a great game and as long as we're having fun with it, nothing else matters.

000110006149d ago

I really don't think Sony expected this title to really sell in Massive, massive numbers. they were just being realistic. I think Sony didn't really 100% believe in the product enough to push it too hard- letting it stand on its own two feet.

Sony did not fail in any way. The game is brilliant, the SP & MP, and surely have sold enough to warrant a sequel which will sell BUCKETS based off the success of KZ2. Sony played their cards very well, minimising risk (millions in advertising budget) , whilst at the same time adding to their software portfolio. As well as that, they are reducing pressure on Guerilla Games by not expecting record-breaking sales with this game.

When all is said and done at the end of this gen, I expect KZ2 to have sold maybe 2.5m+ copies, similar to other 1st party PS3 titles... all without much advertising!

The only way this game failed was in providing fanboys with fodder.

ironmonkey6149d ago

wow the amount of people playing now and people are just realizing how amazing it is and buying the ps3 cause of it and the games that are coming, hell no its not a fail. when you get japan to buy killzone especially a place that could care less about fps that spells success. if they were to do another data check for sales on kz you would see an increase so how is that a fail it was slow at first but it is now! picking up.

000110006149d ago

it's "couldn't care less" not "could care less".

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne490d ago (Edited 490d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro490d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken489d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown490d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72490d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken489d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya489d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast490d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro719d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72719d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_719d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm

Profchaos718d ago (Edited 718d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23718d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000719d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381023d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1023d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1023d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381023d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.
