That was a poor marketing decision and it'll come back to bit them in the bum. I can see why they did that. They were worried that Sony would get too close on price at launch otherwise.

Mind you, I reckon, because of the 360 Arcade's low price point, Sony decided that they wouldn't be able to compete on price so went the other way and gave a console with all the stuff that a console should have (though, Sony took some of them away so they could compete a bit better on price - Backwards compatibility, Memory card slots, Extra USB/Net ports).

I have several friends that own arcades that don't even have/need hard drives. It really appeals to the most casual of gamer. The prices for these hard drives are going down, I saw a 120 GB HD for $78. And the prices for the wireless adapter is going down as well.

It sounds like a great deal. I'm sure this will move mountains of these things out of the stores, although that tennis game is kinda boring, in my opinion.

But if they can continue this trend then really, there's no stopping em.

I think that's who MS is going after with the Arcade...casual Wii owners who might want to dip their toe into HD gaming...they pop in Madden (or the EU equivalent) once a month when they have some buddies over.

Edit: Jockamo beat me to it.

butterfinger6230d ago (Edited 6230d ago )

It's sad when you think $78 is a good deal for a 120GB hard drive. I guess as far as Microsoft goes, that IS a good deal. I do have to say that a good majority of my friends that own 360's don't really need the hard drive other than for Rock Band/Guitar Hero songs.

I recon the Xbox 360 Arcade is a great value compared what I consider it's main competitor, the PS2. It can do everything the PS2 can do just better with an upgrade path at a very attractive and close price point to the PS2. Now the PS2 large game library is unmatched though by any current system though.

People that complain about the hard drive is mistaken about who the 360 Arcade is really competing against. The majority of people that consider an Arcade aren't going to consider PS3 due to the high price point, but rather look at the Wii and the PS2. Neither which have a hard drive, neither which can do HD gaming and neither have any significant online gaming support.

butterfinger6230d ago (Edited 6230d ago )

You honestly think that the 360 arcade is "competing" with the PS2? If so, I have to disagree. Microsoft is probably trying to get consumers that are upgrading from their PS2 that they already own to go the XBOX360 route, but they are definitely trying to compete with the Wii. The PS2 is half the price of 360 arcade, so I would hardly say they are "close" in cost.

I thought MS opted to surface mount 256mb of memory to accommodate the NXE? It was done in all new arcade systems as far as I recall. This way they didnt have to include a memory unit. You would think that if the same board is used in all three systems that even the new elites and pro's would have an extra 256mb or mem on board for storage.

Ms has a stockpile of 20gb hdd and should just make all arcade sku's come with a 20gb drive. When Ms stopped making the 20gb premium (pro) as well as the individual 20gb packaging, the drive had to go someplace. Logically they should have gone to the arcades.

"I think that's who MS is going after with the Arcade...casual Wii owners who might want to dip their toe into HD gaming..."

I think MS's Strategy is working but it could be doing better given the price advantage.

This might come down to a price-war...

edgeofblade6230d ago

Agreed, but the on-board storage (or included memory card in older packages) makes it a logically complete, functional system.

But MS should have done a MUCH better job with hard drives instead of this screwy proprietary scheme. Why can't we save games on USB or use our own drives? It's a little stupid.

locos856230d ago

Why do they always have to use 3rd party games??? They should just throw in Banjo Kazooi or however you spell it. It's probably better than this crap.

Hmmm, i wonder if MS will drop the price of the 360 even further if ps3 gets a price-cut ?

The 360 is already really cheap for what you get!

People dont realise how expensive the Wii is for what it does, i remember all my m8s were going on how the ps3 is so expensive compared to the wii, its because they just dont understand the capabilities of the console they are buying! I mean, can the Wii even play DVD movies yet ? lol

Einhander6230d ago

The sad thing is that the Wii launched at $50 more than the Gamecube yet the tech is basically the same and they STILL havent dropped the price. I cant justify paying $250 for something that costs probably half of that to manufacture.

Mindboggle6230d ago

This bundle really sucks D!CK. Im looking to pick up a new 360 soon after it broke and this is really not tempting me. Why dont they just give us the US halo/fable bundle at the same price as US have and then we would all be happy.

Anyway im very happy with my PS3 at the moment so I might not even bother.

Elven66230d ago

It might not appeal to everyone but if the Kung Fu Panada/Lego Indy bundles proved anything it was that a bundle no matter what will still sell consoles. And that goes for any system btw.

Evocation6230d ago

That came with an extra controller, lest the bundle i got did and worked out being quite cheap for it.

edgeofblade6230d ago

Call Microsoft and get a repair. I really don't have a lot of sympathy for whiners after seeing how much money Microsoft spent to back their 3 year warranty.

One BILLION dollars. $1,000,000,000. That's class-action suit-sized cash without the class-action suit!

tha_meat_beater6230d ago

less money and even less of a system!

Pootie Tang6230d ago

The arcade isn't that bad, if you have no interest in online gaming or buying stuff online, it's all u need. I went my first yr with one and never wanted a harddrive until i got hooked on COD3 and wanted the map packs.

However, only including standard AV cables is lame, they should throw in some composites at least.

darthv726230d ago

Standard AV is the same as composite. I think you mean component. I agree. There is no reason why they cant include the same hd-av cables the pro's have. That cable set will do both composite and component.

Pootie Tang6230d ago

yea ur right lol, mainly i just wanted to point out that with arcade bundle you will need cables as well
