In all the time i played on 360 cross game chat was something i only used a handful of times , while i hope Sony can include it on PS3 it's not something that i personally see as vital.

If you think of the spectator mode on Killzone 2. I could have a mate on the fly feeding me live info....kinda like how people are cheating on cod5. The devs have to make sure these features wont ruin games.

If you can use it in game, this would be great! I use private chat or group chat all the time on the xbox. Been wanting something like this for the PS3 so I can enjoy the game with MY friends not random ppl.

This would be a great idea for "Cell Phone" only owner like myself.
I would have a free or cheaper phone line at the house that doesn't need a service tech to come out and fix it. I know problems will come up but Skype is free so its not a big deal. This would be awesome for all of us whose homes are complete dead zones when we go into them.

because I use cross game chat all the time, what I want to know is if you make a call to a cell phone from Skype does it cost you call time?

the point is that we have had it from day one and it's a brilliant service well worth the £35-£50 per year, until you do have it on the PS3 you cannot argue why we are prepared to pay for it, those that have been using it since the start know it's worth it.

I love my ps3 more then my 360. But even I will admit that cross game party chat is a necessity for the true hardcore gamers on the ps3. I dont know how many times Ive had to call my friend just so we can find a game on Killzone 2 when it first launched. Sure its sorta fixed now with the new patch, but is asking for cross game party chat really too much to ask for? Doesn't the psp have cross game skype? Is the psp more powerful then the ps3? I think not my fellow gamers. Just keep asking Sony and someday we will have it.

I see to many people on hear bashing cross game voice chat saying that they don't need it and it ruins games. Well thats dumb if you don't use it great then you don't have to but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have it. If you think it ruins games i can see your point, but i think it improves games because I hate listening to peoples non game related conversations. When i play a game with my friend online we talk about all sorts of B.S. that i bet a lot of people don't want to listen too.

I use my PS3 not just for gaming, but also for blu-ray movie, "quick check" internet browser, media (audio, moivie, photo) server with medialink. It is a real media center. From the first day I plugged my PS3eye I wished I could make video calls via skype on my 120 inch projector. How about cool! This would be a lot easier for my kids to get in contact with the family (an opened laptop is very tempting for a full glass of milk...) As for me, cross-game chat is not the point why I find Skype attractive for the PS3.

I have said it before and I'll say it again.

Skype, in its current configuration, has a very low memory footprint. With some adjustments, I have no doubt they could make a lite version run on PS3 and allow both cross game chat and chatting with friends who are on their PC/standalone Skype phones.

Skype on PS3 would be a bigger deal than just "cross game chat".

Very interesting idea in this article, would be a wonderful feature to have.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
