The most forgotten PS3 feature

The PS3 has a wide variety of features. The widely known features are the Blu-Ray player and an internet browser. However, there is a major feature that does not get much attention. That feature is the ability to install a Linux OS.

for the most part anyway. I know I dont. I want pc, I go to my pc. I want Motorstorm I go to my ps3. I know the feature is used by some ps3 owners but Im sure most of the community never has put too much stock into it.

FamilyGuy6235d ago

Seems useless if you ask me. If Sony themselves were to create a proper linux based OS specifically for the PS3 then maybe they could create a useful one.

SL1M DADDY6235d ago

It's not forgotten, it's just not very useful for the every-day gamers. I have a Linux desk top already and didn't see the need to make my PS3 into one. I like the OS the way it is.

edhe6234d ago

It's about as useful as a toaster that can also be a tap.

O_o.

Oner6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Sucks for those who just don't know what it's capable of, those who don't even want to try or those who just give BS excuses...

Me ~ I'll be rocking Marvel VS Capcom on Mame to then jump on some Super Mario World in SNES, maybe a little Zelda on NES, or how about some classic Sonic on Genesis or an old fav like Bonk for Turbo Graffix 16 (just to name a VERY VERY VERY few games on MANY different systems).

Oh well ;) sucks for those who doubt it...

gamesR4fun6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

so easy to install works like a full out pc plays video sound (tho it takes a bit to get it to play all the newest formats smoothly) Runs firefox n tons of cool free linux apps.
Sure we dont use it much with 4 pc's in the house and one hooked into the same hd tv as the ps3. But if we didnt id use it for sure. Heck thing can even back up your b/r disks hand if you dont have a pc with that can. (ya we back up all our movies n play em off a hd)

zerojay6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Thanks for linking my PS3 emulator video. Check out my video down below. I think you guys will like what I'm working on. :)

FamilyGuy6234d ago

Those are nice and all but im over emulators, i had my fill of them with on my Psp so that feature isnt too great.

@ gamesR4fun -

now that sounds useful, i didnt know you could backup Blu-ray movie via linux using the PS3 blu-ray drive as a blu-ray reader

adolson6234d ago

Agree with one of the replies above. I run Linux on my netbook, my desktops, and my media server at home, and also my workstation at work. I don't see a need to run it on my gaming system. The fact that my PCs all run Linux are the main reason I even got a gaming console to begin with, what with the lack of variety and quantity of games for Linux.

potenquatro6234d ago

But they feature I always semm to forget to use is file transfering via bluetooth. I keep sticking usb memory sticks lol.

ThanatosDMC6234d ago

I think it's the 6-way video chat. I've only gotten up to three at a time though... but that's with family.

Szarky6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

LOL @ everyone disagreeing with the people who don't care for linux on the PS3. I always thought it would be cool to put it on my PS3 but I haven't because whenever I read what people use it for I laugh.

@1.4 "Marvel VS Capcom on Mame to then jump on some Super Mario World in SNES, maybe a little Zelda on NES, or how about some classic Sonic on Genesis or an old fav like Bonk for Turbo Graffix 16" This is what every person sounds like when they explain what they use linux for. I'm sorry but I bought a PS3 to enjoy PS3 games(although I have done couple PS2 games). There's too many good PS3 games to have time for... NES games? WTF If I wanted to go back into the early 90's I'd make a time travel machine.

The_Zeitgeist6234d ago

I think that most people are to unsure about how to do it. It's not like Sony is pounding it in to consumers as a selling point. It's kinda one of those things that is cool to say you can do with it, but never actually do it. All in all though I am amazed by the amount of things you can do with a PS3. I love mine. Wouldn't give it up for anything.

Oner6233d ago

@Szarky ~ Oh well I guess I'll have the boring capability of playing THOUSANDS of different games for when company comes over or just to be able to do so...wait a sec! Can someone TRY to explain to me how that is in some way bad? I mean lets see I have a PS3 with a large HDD that supports a FREE additional OS that allows me to ADD FREE options, programs & classic games and that is supposed to be useless and/or bad?

F'ing amazing. Sounds like a bit of immaturity or jealousness to me...

Well I heard you can't really access the GPU of the PS3 yet.

I know I would like to install some PC games through Linux, wud be fun!

sukru6235d ago

Unfortunately it does not work well enough. I have my own powerful PC for general stuff, and PS3 has a usable web browser, so basically it's not needed.

The main issue is the RAM. It only provides 200MB usable memory, where a basic GUI (Gnome or KDE) itself requires more than this.

But... It may be argued that, built-in homebrew/linux capability has deterred hackers from cracking PS3 (it no longer is necessary).

AuToFiRE6234d ago

gnome and KDE can run off of a lot less than that, i had gnome running on 32megs of RAM on a pentium MMX, right now on this computer, i am running gnome at 8.2megs

sukru6234d ago

Which version of GNOME are you running? Because I have only the file manager use more than amount:

$ ps aux
sukru 7423 0.0 1.9 104024 20360 ? Ss Apr02 0:09 nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default3

(104MB shared, 20MB non shared memory)

Strife Lives6235d ago

I have an external Hdd. .thats where my videos go.thing is,almost all of my games need to be installed, its left me with 30gigs on my 80gig hdd and Ive heard. . .you need atleast 20gigs for Linux use? Is this right?

FamilyGuy6235d ago

First of all it only needs 10Gbs otherwise those rare 20Gb PS3 owners would be screwed.

Second, why do you not delete game installs? Like the ones you are no longer playing or don't play that often. Your save files are in a different area so you won't loose your place in the game or anything.

I too have the older 80Gb model (THE BEST PS3 version if you ask me) and an external HDD --> http://www.amazon.com/AcomD...

and i never run out of space.

therealwillie6235d ago (Edited 6235d ago )

its mostly forgotten (atleast by me) because it takes a bit of effort to set up, and once you have there is no real reward, its impossible to get flash working for firefox and i couldn't play avi vids because i couldn't install vlc. (maybe it has changed since)of course now the ps3 can play nearly every type of .avi and has an up to date flash so now there is absolutely no need for it.

basically you end up spending way too much time getting everything to work and they end up not working

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle19d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde26d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7728d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga28d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199227d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga27d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman27d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box28d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion27d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7228d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7527d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit27d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14928d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7728d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
