PSP 2: Separating Fact from Fiction

Details are scarce about the PSP 2 console, although just about everybody from industry analysts, to developers, to journalists believe that it is on the horizon. Some sources are even suggesting that the device will be formally introduced at this year's E3 event, and may actually go on sale before Christmas 2009! In order to shed some light on these rumors and keep the discussion as grounded as possible, we are here to slice through the hype with our most realistic assessment of what a potential PSP successor will look like.

This article is useful because there is SOOOOO much speculation running around about the PSP 2.

I have my own theory, which is that Sony will abandon the psp platform altogether and go for a much smaller, more compact digital download only phone. Essentially a Sony/Ericsson branded iPhone with multimedia and casual gaming functionality.

joydestroy6239d ago

yeah i hope you're wrong too because in that case the iPhone would seriously kill that. if they stay away from the phone idea, i think they'd have another winner because they'd be concentrating solely on games. plus, even though i have an iPhone, i'll never play a single game on it. ever. well maybe tetris if i get unlazy and look around for it.

concerning the article, who the f said anything about a hard drive? i believe everyone is speculating flash in the first place. and a 32gig would suffice. the part about the hard drive should've been left out and flash should've been talked about in the paragraph where they go on about UMD being dead.

and hardware specs...i can almost guarantee you that it will have an OLED screen. this is most evident because their Walkman NWZ-X1000 has one and a touch screen. http://www.engadget.com/200...

oh, and i really like their mock-up on there.

Sherif_1296239d ago

Yeah, that would make sense seeing as Sony are really pushing for the PSP this year...

LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Resistance, the list goes on for the PSP. I highly doubt they are abandoning the system to make something completely different.

talltony6239d ago

that the psp 2 will be out this year is because of all the new psp games coming out this year, I mean lbp for psp is coming why would they release it on psp one if psp 2 is just around the corner? It just doesnt seem like its coming this year. I predict that it will have the same specs as the psp 1 and just be a new redesign with a touch oled screen, with better battery life and maybe dual joysticks to support some new kinds of fps psp games.

I will be back shortly do debunk this whole entire article.

Just wait and see. I finally got the ok.

DARKKNIGHT6239d ago

LOL, noobz. iphone is nice but the samsung omnia is a much better phone with more customizations available.

and as far as gaming goes, psp > iphone.

I think If you make it like the fan designed at the end of the article and If Sony made the PSP 2 an open source phone.. It would be EFFIN HUGE.. Then with DD you can DL a new game anywhere and make a call.. Also with PSP its like an Iphone.. With the music and movies you can have on it.. But the PSP would have an advantage because you can transfer everything to PS3 at anytime with the Internet and the Linking it up.. You could save memory by keeping everything on your ps3 and then with the 3G Network every Phone provider has.. Just watch or listen to music through the internet from your ps3 or DL a playlist or movie from your ps3.. the possibilities would be endless if Sony made the PSP2 an open source phone.. I wouldnt care how big it was if it was open source.. The IPhone isnt a small phone.. So if you could make it close to that size.. It would be Awesome

Let me help you: It's all fiction.

Max Power6239d ago

in his article is the fact that he says a Christmas 09 release date wouldn't happen because they would muddle up the big game releases. Then later on he states how Sony would focus on Digital Distribution, but aren't they releasing Patapon 2 via DD? Which is one of those big games.

Lumbo6239d ago

PP2 is a PSP1 game, releasing a PSP2, when you try to get a great PSP1 linup for sale would muddle up said lineup , makes perfect sense.

JohnnyMann4206239d ago (Edited 6239d ago )

...it just seems that every fact and fiction decisions are ones that he wants to see and not see with his own personal opinion on why this and that sucked....like the full qwerty keyboard for example.

UMD = dead he says there are enough sources but sliding screen not?

There has been plenty of "sources" for both...some in and out of industry.

Good article in general though.

There is no fact at this point. It's all speculation.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman33d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
