Square Enix continues to surprise with unexpected new entrants in a variety of genres -- Project Cube is certainly one of them. An overhead Robotron-style game for Xbox Live Arcade, it mixes cute visuals with bloody mayhem and cool special effects. It also offers multiplayer and co-op play. Looks fun from the trailer.

One of the more unusual offerings at E3 was Project Cube, an Xbox Live Arcade title developed by Square Enix. It's not a puzzle game, based on an existing franchise, or a RPG.
Project Cube shares more in common with dual analog stick shooters like Robotron and Geometry Wars than it does with Dragon Quest. You move with the left stick and fire laser beams with the right stick. When one of the cubes dies it explodes into a pile of blood. How… postmodern.

Square first revealed Project Cube (the working title), an Xbox Live Arcade-exclusive twin-stick shooter modeled after classic titles like Robotron, back in late April. The game uses a clean, monochrome aesthetic for the little protagonist and the various humanoid and robot enemies, but just wait 'til you kill one -- a giant red spatter covers the game board, and each successive kill only further manages to bloody up the screen.

IncGamers' Tim McDonald gets to grips with Square's forthcoming top-down shooter, Project Cube.
