Confirmed: Prototype fully-focused on single-player

VG247: Radical's Tim Bennison has confirmed that Prototype will have no multiplayer component, instead focusing solely on you, and you alone. Makes you feel special, don't it?

-EvoAnubis-6159d ago

When this game was first announced, co-op was one of the main reasons I was looking at it, because Crackdown co-op was so much fun to play and I expected something similar here. Then came the news that they had cut the co-op, but that was okay, because the concept I still found interesting.

Then came the gameplay footage from On The Spot, or Fun With Spots, or HotSpot, or whatever the hell GameSpots video show is called....and that just killed it. The game looked TERRIBLE. Then they delayed it, which was a good plan, but when it resurfaced, it was still as something I found myself not caring for.

The guy is WAY overpowered, the city is bland, the enemies are pushovers, the graphics are sub-par, and without a whole lot of polish (as in, more than the week or so they have left before they need to go gold) none of that will change.

I may end up renting this, but it's far from my buy list.

xhi46159d ago

not only the environments, the characters, the cars, the city has NO character. It's like a ps2 effort with sub par next gen graphics. It could've looked incredible! I think they just need more dev time.

DelbertGrady6159d ago

IMO it only looks slightly better than INFamous. Relax guys, I'm only kidding. ;)

I didn't expect multiplayer from a game like this. They rarely have it. It did work for Crackdown though, but that game didn't have the same story element to it and it looks like Prototype will have lots more going on at once. Loads of vehicles and characters on screen at once.

I think it looks awesome, the graphics are impressive in the sense of scale and objects on screen. Gameplay remains the most important thing as always and that's something I can't rate until I've tried it.

morganfell6158d ago

This is unfortunate for any game because according to many reviewers no Co-op is a huge failure. Just ask all the reviewers that cited this as their chosen damnation and justification in low balling Killzone 2.

xboxlj6158d ago

Is Infamous co-op? I have been considering on getting this or Infamous and so far Prototype seems to be the better of the two.

morganfell6158d ago

No, and that is my point. This branding iron used to attack Killzone 2 will not be pulled out of the barn. How is that fair?

I think Infamous looks like a better made game, more stable and looks to actually have a story you care about, not to mention the graphics/sound etc

This does look like a fun game though, but id guess it will be reviewed lower (just my opinion)

Infamous has no online either does it ?

EDIT: and ye i think its better for devs to either focuss on MP or SP instead of producing a mediocure both, look at Uncharted ! that has like the best single play experience and doesnt get boring on replay becuase it is so well made. Patching online into a game just so it may boost its scores or help people play it a little longer is a waste of resources that could have gone to improving SP.

Some games pull both off though, like Killzone 2, but that is with alot of time/money which most third parties dont have much of.

MK_Red6159d ago

Superb news. Seriously, wished more devs would do this and focus on one aspect of the game and make it all it can be. Hate the mandatory multiplayer AND singleplayer trend of this gen. What's wrong with singleplayer only? It RULES.

DelbertGrady6159d ago

Some games really benefit from it though. Like GTA IV and Gears of War 1&2. But I get what you are saying. In many cases it feels tacked on, and some games are better without it. It has to be planned from inception in order to be good when it comes to certain games. As long as they don't have to compromise.

ParanoidMonkey6159d ago

I agree. BioShock 2 getting multiplayer made me especially sad.

@Soda

Great avatar.

Bombomb6158d ago

god of war is one of them as well which there was some rumor about

Ghoul6158d ago

100% agree,

especially since bioshock is sucha great game they shouldnt waste a single hour on a multiplayer almost noone will play.

Turok, Dark Sector, RE 5, Bioshock, Condemned, Lost Planet, etc.

all totally unworthy, ok some may seem fun to some people but all these games would have benefited ALOT more if the time would have been invested in the game instead of the tacked on multiplayer.

those games also never get any support for the future.

steve30x6158d ago

I agree. I cant see what the big attraction is to multiplayer online. When I buy a shooting game I never go near the online part and always focus on the single player. Fair enough I do agree that sometimes its fun to have split screen multiplayer fun but I dont like oline because some people take it too far and have foul mouths.

JokesOnYou6158d ago (Edited 6158d ago )

I never expected co-op or multiplayer but am I the only that thinks co-op at least would have been a cool OPTION for replay value with friends. Don't misunderstand I'm all for a great single player experience but I don't see how a OPTIONAL co-op experience even if its tact-on would make the single player experience worse in any way.....simple I first beat the awesome single player experience alone as many times as I wished, then I go online with a bud or stranger causing total havoc in the streets playing with Alex and a alt personality. Hell maybe a "horde-type" mode where me and a friend have to kill waves of ever stronger monsters, and guess what if you think its silly just dont bother with it, I'm just saying I think it would be fun and for those budget conscious gamers for $60 bucks co-op/multiplayer is a MORE bang for the buck. Either way this game looks like a blast....day one purchase for me.

MK_Red6158d ago

Agreed with you all on BioShock 2 multiplayer.

Soda Popinsky, actually I think both GTA4 and GeOW2 games were hurt by this. Did GTA4 have the real fun factor and variety that series had? Did Gears have a great and deep story?
Look at Legacy of Kain games, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Quake 3 and more. What's so special about them? They only focused on one area and made it all it can be.

Now look at COD4. Great multiplayer but extremely short singleplayer. Or Gears 2 with its bad and predictable story and characters. I strongly believe games can be more if they focus on one aspect.

JokesOnYou, I understand what you're saying. Simple co-op is a completely different thing from online / usual multiplayer but even then, I think only games that are MEANT for co-op should have it. Like MK: Shaolin Monks or Left 4 Dead.

I still think the game looks unfinished. The graphics and environment are pretty bland and the game just looks too easy. Such insane power you have. Hopefully there are some powerful bosses that'll provide long, challenging battles that give you a run for your money, because if the entire game is filled with the push-over enemies that we've seen so far, then I'll be bored of this game quickly.

Oh well. I will await the reviews and see what the "professionals" say about this one. I've got a feeling it won't be doing that well for some reason, but I hope I'm wrong and it turns out to be a really fun romp!

Shane Kim6158d ago

As you said, it looks unfinished and way too easy. I think this game is beaten in one sitting.

Panthers6159d ago

This game is really impressing me with all the stuff you can do. Cant wait for this to release. This + InFamous = awesome.

Ranking The Coldest, Most Ruthless Protagonists In Gaming

Not all video game protagonists are sweet, jolly, or wholesome. Folks like Agent 47 are cold, ruthless, and reserved and it shows.

cloganart593d ago

I'd like to believe Joel's situation is more about turning into a calloused survivor in a cold-hard world who may have made selfish decisions. Not inherently ruthless.

Ah, fond memories of strangling all the people in their hotel rooms in Hitman 1

Lara Croft, Nathan Drake etc, cos they pretend to be the good guys but are mass murderers that show no remorse.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos676d ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto676d ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger88676d ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies675d ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
