FFXIII Going Multiplatform, How does it Really Affect Sony?

PCN takes a look at the positive side of Final Fantasy XIII's multiplatform announcement.

Most people who wanted a ps3 for Final Fantasy already have one. Also, seasoned Final Fantasy players will probably get it on the ps3 platform anyway. I dont see the sales being affected. But square will definitely sell more copies of the game being on multiple platforms.

Unless you count those sissies who cried all over the internet and called for everyone to boycott their games. Stupid. Crying over a video game being put on another console.

SpoonyRedMage6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Totally agreed dude. It's beneficial for everyone. Sony even makes a profit off the 360 sales!

I shall be getting it on the 360 unless I miraculously end up with a PS3(wouldn't mind having one;]).

360 man6234d ago

i concur.

it doesnt effect sony.

everyone benefits

STK0266234d ago

In a way it's true Sony will be making money off the 360 sales of the game, what the article completely fails to mention is how console maker have royalties for every games sold on their system. If the devs of Syberia 3 are to be believed, Sony asks for quite some cash, so I'm guessing Sony would still be making more money if all sales were coming from royalties rather than by their 8-9% in SE.

kewlkat0076234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

outside Japan. If they already own an Xbox 360, they might just go ahead and get it for the Xbox 360 barring any setbacks. If the PS3 price is still out of range again you have a substitute.

The system seller potential outside Japan is minimized because the Xbox 360 Exist and is getting the same game.

Again, this is all part of MS strategy this gen. Weed gamers off or postpone the sale of the Platstation Hardware/Market-Share, offering that same 3rd-party title/franchise, most have come to known or might wanna get into.

I'm not sure how long MS has but the PS3 is still too pricey, so this is were we stand. I bought my PS3 because of this game mostly but that was a huge surprise when it was announced multiplatform. So I now have a choice to make, and I get the feeling there are plenty out there, with that same predicament.

GWAVE6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Well, FFXIII is still exclusive to the PS3 for 6 months to a year (depending on how long localization takes) in Japan, and that will be a big wake-up call to JRPG devs. When it hits the West no doubt Microsoft will try to advertise FFXIII as if it's a 360 exclusive (just like they've done for GTA4 and RE5), but it'll be kinda hard to erase that head start in Japan.

UltraNova6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Let me help you mate...No you and the others you mentioned dont have a choice to make.

If you actually have a ps3 (or plan to buy one)as you say and do plan to buy FFXIII then you should probably be interested in FFXIII versus as well which in my opinion looks more interesting( if you have a psp or planing to get one FFXIII agito as well ). SO! buying the ps3 version should be a given for you as for anyone truly interested in a complete FF Fabula Nova Crystallis experience..

Oh, and if you think of giving me excuses like 'what if I am only interested on FFXIII' and I dont need a ps3 to get it...

Yeah...tell that to MS and their GTAIV DLC deal... What, are you only interested on the regular game and you dont want the DLC? Thats fine really. What if you change your mind after playing the game? You would want to own the game on the 360 right? Then in FFXIII's case you need to be on the ps3's site thats the end of the story.

Dont take this as an assault mate I am simply giving you my honest opinion here...Its up to you to decide.

PlayBeyond guys.

DailyAddict6234d ago

I would normally agree with several points in this article, but it's also speculation that lies heavily on the what if factor.

For example, FF VS XIII is "currently" PS3 exclusive, much in the same way that FFXIII "was" PS3 exclusive. It would not surprise me in the very least that this year's big E3 announcement is yet again another FF port. It should be to no one's surprise that third party exclusives are slowly going away. Almost every third party game this generation has gone to the other platform and if you are going to port one, why not port the other as well? Square would only be pissing off consumers to release one game on the 360 and then the rest of the connected series is on another console. So, I wouldn't rule out a port happening being announced at E3 as well.

After that, as much as I would side with the whole 1-disk vs. 4+ discs, after talking to a lot of friends about this scenario, most 360 gamers really don't care. They are use to it. All their RPG's all ready make you get up and swap discs so it's not anything new to them. You won't see too many 360 gamers buying a PS3 just cause it has one disc.

While it's true that the PS3 version is the lead platform I'm honestly curious as to how much of a difference (if any) there will be between the two games. Square is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to their FF series and I don't see them releasing the game even for another platform if it's significantly worse than another version. I think most of the development time will be spent making sure the port is as close to the original as possible. We're once again going to be nitpicking over details that most people won't even be able to tell the difference unless they look at screenshots or videos side by side as sites like GameTrailers loves to screw you over with. I would like to say the PS3 will be vastly superior, but I don't know. Square hasn't shown any 360 screenshots as of yet and won't until they are much further in development (or should I say 'started the development').

I will say this though regardless: I'm upset with how Square is handling the game at this point in terms of release for North America. We could have the game released MUCH sooner than it is being released had they not decided to work on the 360 port after the PS3 version is done. This is holding up a release because the PS3 version will be done months (maybe even a year) before the 360 version is done and it's just sitting there because they of a simultaneous release. Bogus. I may actually just import this game on my PS3 and not wait, that's just ridiculous.

Doppy6234d ago

When I read the title I just knew it was going to be a fanboy article. But actually it turned out to be a really good read. The author made some really good points, and had facts, quotes, and statements to back his points up. Now if only every other so called game journalist was as credible then we wouldn't have a console war at all.

kewlkat0076234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Yeah, I did buy my PS3 for FFXIII way before multiplatform announcements and before every other "3rd-party games/franchises", that made the PS brand what it is today, went multiplatform. Of course, FFXIII was the BIG one for me.

I've been playing the "CORE Final Fantasy Series" for years. Never bothered with the X2's and such of the series and didn't really like FFXII as much due to the MMO-type feel & Automated battles.(I'm old-school Turn-Based)

I'm a big fan of Nobuo Uematsu & Hironobu Sakaguchi, hence why I had to get an Xbox 360 & Lost Odyssey. No doubt about it. Though, they are not so much part of Square anymore, the first CORE Final Fantasy to debut on Next-Gen, have all been great and some of the BEST, I'd say.(These two were big part of)

- Final Fantasy IV - Super Nintendo
- Final Fantasy VII - PS1
- Final Fantasy X - PS2
? Final Fantasy XIII - PS3/360

So yeah, I've always been more so excited about the CORE games in the series. I'm sure I'll get FF VS along the way and wouldn't mind feeding my PS3 for some JRPG's, as it's lacking big time but I'm not drooling over it because it a PS3 Exclusive like some. Oh I assure you, this is not a hard decision at all, thanks for the suggestion.

It's really not a Big deal, what I choose to play B3yond or what else I wanna Jump into...lol

All-36234d ago

Haven't you all had to "wait" for previous versions of FF games - concerning Japanese release dates vs North American and European versions of the same games?

So why the gripes now?

irish-leprecaun6234d ago

so let me get this straight-
just under 10% of all the money microsoft bribed square-enix with went to sony and then 10% of the profit
from those games that then bombed on the 360 compared to what they would have done on other platforms???

ceedubya96234d ago

Meaning that while FF13 being multi won't hurt Sony, it won't really help them either (except for Japan, where it is console exclusive). The game will more than likely sell extremely well across both consoles, becoming the best selling JRPG on both consoles. The game will sell consoles for Sony in Japan, and will sell many copies for the PS3 and 360 everywhere else.

Yipee Bog6234d ago

will this be turn based, or will it be like mass effect combat? i like to have a little more input with my characters combat than attacking then waiting to be attacked. this game is looking really cool and i would like to play it when it comes out.... depending on gameplay that is.

FarEastOrient6234d ago

@Irish

As a shareholder in Square Enix myself (look at my history of comments) the games that were made exclusive for the Xbox 360 actually decreased the value of the shares. So in a way not only did selling games on the Xbox 360 not generate enough revenue with none breaking even, thus causing the value of the company as a whole to decrease since share price is a representative of what the market values the company.

When Square Enix made Final Fantasy XIII multi-platform, information that wasn't even shared with share holders was in a way to recover the lost revenue from Xbox 360 owners that they couldn't retrieve from The Lost Remnant and Star Ocean IV. While the PSP and the PS3 will generate a profit for Square Enix, the Xbox 360 has still yet to prove that it generate profit for the company especially when the fees of using multiple DVD9s make a cut into revenue with games using multiple disk.

Star Ocean IV had no choice but to use multiple disk, if they didn't entire worlds would have to be cut.

You have to remember that Sony is part of the DVD Association while Microsoft is not, so for every DVD and Xbox 360 sold through Microsoft a royalty has to be payed to the Association (In turn to Sony and others).

The original Xbox had the same issue hence the cost for the remote controller to play DVDs, the entire price was to cover the controller and royalty fees to the DVD Association.

creatchee6234d ago

BUT, you have to admit - people who have a 360 that were CONSIDERING getting a PS3 for FFXIII (believe me, there's a lot more of them out there than N4Gers would have you think) no longer have a reason to. I mean, spend a few hundred more just so you don't have to get up and switch discs? Or maybe for some kind of game cross-talk with Versus XIII?

I myself don't know which console I will get it for. It really depends on how the game runs and if there is bonus content or the aforementioned cross-talk with Versus XIII. For a recent example, I'm glad I didn't get Fallout 3 on the PS3, given the problems that it had at launch. But then again, I was very happy to have bought Mirror's Edge on PS3 for the free time trial map. It all depends on the game, folks.

There can be many reasons to get a multiplat game on a specific system. However, being a "seasoned Final Fantasy player" is not one of them.

Matpan6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

Apparently you cannot Agree with someone with 15 agrees... or maybe do the disagrees come from the fact that you are buying it for... oh let´s not speak that name here under a news in the 360 tab!!! oh damn!!! there it goes... I said 360... let the disagrees fly :P

If you own a 360, please don´t say so... and won´t you dare speak of buying a multiplat for MS´s console rather than for the PS3...

Shame on you!!! you should buy a PS3 copy and keep it in your shelf... shame shame shame...

thesummerofgeorge6234d ago

The consumer has to wait because of corporate rivalry. Fine release it multiplat. but don't hold back the Ps3 version.

Matpan6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

holdong it back or not is a business decission... As showing a CGI video of a game that will release 4 years late to create hype...
god... just buy the game when it ships...

and I know it was a low blow and totally uncalled for... I just wanted to flame a little bit... too much Sony defense force in this site... You know.. just to balance a bit... Will surely get 300 disagrees...

NewZealander6234d ago

couldnt agree more, you're one of the few people on N4G that actually makes comments worth reading!

+bubbs

pain777pas6233d ago

It used to be a game that I associated with Nintendo...no wait...Playstation...no wait...Microsoft. I mean who cares at this point. I am sure that we all know that this changes the gaming landscape forever in some senses because you just cannot count on exclusive 3rd party games anymore which makes first party games so significant this gen. I like what I've seen so far but I need just alittle more convincing. Square how about a demo in the US release hmmmm??????????

RememberThe3576233d ago

They didn't want to see another PS2 this generation. They thought that putting their games on the 360 instead of the PS3 would balance things out. Unfortunately they failed to realize that they where making sh*tty games that no one wanted.

Have you ever wondered why the PS3 is the only system they don't have games for? That is why. They didn't want Sony running the show again.

the way i see it? sony still wins this battle here. not only in japan but also else where in the world.

just them owining stakes in squarenix says it all not only that, but most importanly exclusive rights to anything with final fantasy 7 on it?

6234d ago
condorstrike6234d ago

those were the most stupid remarks ever.
what if the x360 and Ps3 got Mario and Zelda?, would anyone thinking of getting the Wii then?

Exclusivity is the reason why Sony made so much money in late 90's and early 2000's all because of one damn game: Final Fantasy.

Stop defending everything Sony related...jeez.

Software_Lover6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

The final Fantasy series has never been exclusive to just one console. There have always been spinoffs on others and even Final Fantasy 11 was on the 360 and pc. People dont buy a wii for Mario and Zelda. They buy it for wii fit, LOL

And besides, Mario and Zelda are platform iconic figures. Final Fantasy characters change with each game.

N4Flamers6234d ago

dont argue with fools. This guy is too young to know that FF started on the NES. He might not know that GTA3 was the main game that won the fight for sony. Oh yeah and people buy a wii for wii play, duh.

LOL my father in law who is a biker has wii fit.

RememberThe3576233d ago

if you think the Final Fantacy sold 140 million PS2's...

ReBurn6233d ago

I haven't played a Final Fantasy beyond VII. It surely isn't the reason I bought a PS2.

They can no more say: ''Final Fantasy XIII is a PS3 exclusive''.

Haha.

Snatcher6234d ago (Edited 6234d ago )

We have Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, God Of War III and Ratchet and clank: A crank in time.

Stupid noob.

EDIT: Yes, thanks. As you can see, people prefer the PS3 fanboys. Since this comment got 3 agrees, and the over got 3 disagrees.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972874d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus874d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim873d ago (Edited 873d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda872d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B872d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125872d ago (Edited 872d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic872d ago (Edited 872d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic872d ago (Edited 872d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981872d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot872d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda872d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay872d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12874d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay872d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183874d ago (Edited 874d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5
