1 v 1 With Aaron Greenberg

1 v 1 interview with Aaron Greenberg, from the Bitbag: "1v1 is finally back and our first guest is Microsoft Product Manager, Aaron Greenberg. No punches were pulled in this interview at all. We talked about Aaron's start in the business, the current failure rate of the 360, how important it was to launch before Sony and Nintendo, E3, payola accusations and how Microsoft views the Nintendo Wii. Aaron even drops his Xbox Live Gamertag and PSN ID so you can play with him online."

looks like you struck a lightning bolt on some Greenberg worshipers. You managed to get 3 replies that had to be deleted.

ThanatosDMC6255d ago

Actually we wrote something that goes along with the word "pass" or a legitimate question. But we all got reported since it was, for some people, ripping on their console.

Yeah, but unfortunately there's still nothing announced as incoming exclusive on the 360. Mine is still collecting dust. Console sales I don't care at all, I'm a gamer, not a sales analyst.

Is the console dead or what ?

Stryfeno26256d ago

So you expect him to announce games during this interview instead of E3...Riiiiiiiiiight.

JeffGUNZ6256d ago

What are you trying to prove? You admitted in the gamerzone you didn't even listen to the interview. He hinted towards allan wake and said he has other surprises on the way. It's still the first quarter of this year, keep your panties on and wait a month till E3. If Sony has so many great games, then shut up and go play them and stop trolling the forums.

talltony6256d ago

that greenburg hasnt played killzone 2 or mlb the show yet. I could care less that he only uses his ps3 for bluray. He is the one missing out by only playing halo wars and re5 on 360 right now.

talltony6255d ago

you guys disagree with me because you think he is not missing out on anything? really? what ever helps you sleep at night i guess.

He said quality over quantity for 360 1st party titles.

See Aaron, the great thing about PS3 1st party titles is that they have both.

soxfan20056256d ago (Edited 6256d ago )

Metacritic 90+ scores for exclusives:

Xbox 360 - 5
PS3 - 4

You are right that PS3 has both quality and quantity, but the 360 does as well. Both PS3 and 360 have quality and quantity. There's no monopoly on either side despite some people's best efforts to prove otherwise.

EDIT @ below - I was just comparing each console's very best. I never implied that games that score in the 80's aren't good. Besides, a quality game is a quality game, regardless of where it comes from.

crck6256d ago

@4.1 I think if you look at 1st party games that score higher then 80 you'll find many more on PS3. Unless you only consider a game good if it scores 90 or higher. Which I think is ridiculous.

green6256d ago

Why must it be 1st party?A great game is a great game, weather 1st,2nd or 3rd party should totally be irrelevant to a gamer.

TheColbertinator6256d ago

@Green

I understand what you mean but I see 1st party exclusives as a great way of making each console unique. If the 360 and PS3 all had the same games, there would be no reason to get the other.

Games like Gran Turismo,Uncharted, and God of War are only on Playstation consoles.Halo,Gears of War,and Forza are only on the Xbox consoles.Mario,Zelda, and Metroid are only on Nintendo consoles.Variety is needed to keep the gaming industry fresh and vibrant.

JD_Shadow6256d ago

It's because with 1st party, you know where their allegiance lies, for one, because, well, they OWN them. You know that you won't see that game or any other content for the game on any other console. Third party, though, is different. You can't exactly hold onto exclusivity onto a third party title forever, and when that runs out, they are free to do whatever with it. Which means give it to the other system with some extra goodies to the people who were patient enough to wait, or things that they wanted to add but couldn't, for whatever reason.

The thing with MS right now is that they are depending too much on third parties, which is alright until you see the pattern you're seeing now. MS doesn't have much else to offer that we KNOW will only be on their system other than Halo Wars and ODST (at least for 09). Everything else is either multiplatform or DLC that they bought. Plus, those that chose not to buy the 360 for whatever reason, or bought the PS3 first (like I did, thus building more of a profile and more of a friends list on the PS3 than on the 360), are getting screwed out of certain things because of the manner that we keep seeing MS go about this. They not only are able to get a game onto their system that was a PS3 exclusive, and then want it at the same date and quality as the PS3 version (thereby gimping the PS3 version because of the smaller capacity of the 360's optical storage format coupled with the MS way of doing business, and plus delaying the PS3 version even FURTHER because of the wait for the 360 version to get done).

Then it's DLC, and though it's good to be able to expand a game, this in a way forces a company to choose sides because MS seems to want to use this "DLC as a weapon" in which they pay millions just so their version is the only one with DLC. It gets annoying because for those that chose the other system or the other system's version, it seems like they don't care about the other version. Plus, for as much as they spend acquiring the exclusivity of the DLC (remember you need the DLC's actual GAME to be able to play the DLC), they could've made another game.

So now you're seeing the negative effects of this strategy. MS spent so much time worrying about Sony and grabbing everything they once had and using their money as a weapon that they forgot about their first parties. Remember, third parties can switch alliances at any point, and having no safety net for if and when it happens will destroy you.

soxfan20056256d ago

Darkpower - you make some good points, but I disagree with a few others. Sure, MS threw money around this generation, but they had to. They were outsold 6:1 by Sony last generation. MS couldn't just do business exactly as they did last generation and expect different results. They needed to give gamers a compelling reason to choose the Xbox brand this time around. Now that the 360 is more established than the original Xbox, MS can (if they want to) begin employing a more traditional business model for the rest of this generation and into the next.

Also, we are in a third party era now. As games become increasingly expensive to develop, studios simply cannot afford to limit their potential audiences. It is very unlikely that a third party would suddenly switch allegiances in this day and age when both PS3 and 360 are providing solid revenues. Besides, MS has an advantage when it comes to third party games because the 360 is cheaper, yet the games are identical to the PS3 versions. As long as MS has that advantage, they are wise to exploit it.

As for me, it gives me no pleasure to know that an exclusive game I'm playing is not available on competing consoles. If I enjoy the game, that is all that matters to me.

Great post by the way - good to see well thought out, non-fanboyish material - a rarity on this site.

Just to throw it out there, I traveled over to MetaCritic and counted up all of the positively received FIRST-PARTY offerings from Sony and Microsoft.

Sony's published 32 games that received favorable scores (75+) for the PS3, 22 of which were released on retail discs (in the case of Ratchet & Clank Quest for Booty and Siren: Blood Curse, they were released on disc in some parts of the world, so I've included them as retail games).

Microsoft has published 31 games that received favorable scores (75+) for the 360, 21 of which were released on retail discs, the rest downloadable.

So, it would seem to me that both companies have published a very evenly matched library of quality games for their respective systems. These numbers are especially eye-catching, to me, due to the fact that the 360 has been on the market over a year longer, and yet Sony has already caught up to and begun to surpass Microsoft in terms of releasing first-party software for their respective platform.

So I think that it is indeed acceptable to say that Sony's first-party library offers quantity AND quality. And if you look at the upcoming lists of first-party releases for Sony and Microsoft it seems quite evident that Sony will begin to stretch a lead over Microsoft.

Please remember, this has nothing to do with "exclusives" per se, because I'm only talking about first-party releases. Third-party releases are another matter entirely. Greenberg mentions "quality over quantity for 360 first party titles," so that's the comparison I'm talking about here: first party titles.

NegativeCreepWA6256d ago

I don't see why people criticize MS for focusing on third party support when last gen they were criticized for not having enough. I remember MS coming into this gen stating that its goal was to gain more third party support. And they've done a great job at accomplishing what they couldn't last gen.

Theirs a lot more third party devs than first party and having their support is just as important.

Aaron was talking specifically about MS vs. Sony 1st party titles. 3rd party was never part of this equation.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
