CHOICE CUTS: Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg

When Microsoft's Xbox 360 Product Management Director Aaron Greenberg talks, people tend to listen. Why? Mostly because he's never afraid to speak his mind, talk a little trash (you know what we're talking about Kaz Hirai), and deliver clues into what gamers can expect from the future of the Xbox brand. Well, that trend continues as we recently had the chance to catch up with Aaron to discuss the topics gamers want to know about the most; OnLive, the future of digital distribution, XBLA Community Games, MMOs on the 360, exactly when he expects a PS3 price cut, and a whole lot more.

"If you look at the market fundamentals they have no choice but to do so with continuing year over year sales declines over the last 5 months, significant loss of market share and public response from consumers, retailers and publishers"

What a douchebag....I cant see how they have lost market share to 360 considering its been out alot longer.

Simon_Brezhnev6239d ago

but he is like most xbox fanboys they worry about whats on ps3 before xbox

kapedkrusader6239d ago

...As long as people think that there will be an upcoming price drop, they won't buy a PS3. That's why MS keeps repeating every 3 months or so that there will be one. After all, they have nothing to lose if proved wrong, but they benefit by lowering Sony's sales of systems and games. It's a shame, but it works. I have four friends that have been waiting for the "price drop" for almost a year now.

GiantEnemyCrab6239d ago

"but he is like most xbox fanboys they worry about whats on ps3 before xbox"

Ah yes and PS3 fanboys don't care at all about the 360. Sure, you will never find a PS3 fanboy in a 360 news article. Yeah right!

MURKERR6239d ago (Edited 6239d ago )

especially the incoming price cut? seriously he should worry about his own house, try keep repairs to a minimum as its foundations are weak (RROD) and buy some furniture because in 2009 his house is looking empty

IdleLeeSiuLung6238d ago

"Sales and expectations vary from developer to developer. Although this is still a very early snapshot of the Community Games sales potential, we’re finding that several of our top sellers will be taking home almost as much income from four months of sales as the average U.S. citizen earns in a full year." - Aaron Greenberg about XNA games

I believe the average salary in the US is 30k. That is not exactly a groundbreaking sales number for a game that can take a year to develop with a team of two people considering those are the top. Unless Aaron has a different number for "average U.S. citizens earn in a full year".

Sarcasm6238d ago

As much as I don't like Aaron Greenburg's comments, it's his Face that bothers me. Everytime I see his Face I just want to punch it.

EBA's Question: "Do you think Sony will drop the price of PlayStation 3 this year?"

GB's Answer: "As far as the PS3 price drop rumors, to be honest we fully expect a PS3 price drop to happen by E3 at the latest. If you look at the market fundamentals they have no choice but to do so with continuing year over year sales declines over the last 5 months, significant loss of market share and public response from consumers, retailers and publishers. It is also a very difficult time economically to try and sell a product at twice the price of your competition"

hmmm...WOW, I surprised! so a 360 PR guy was asked a question and he gave a very Pro-360 but TRUE answer and you sony folks freak out as if the shoe was on the other foot sony wouldn't have said alot worse...yeah right.

-Greenberg's comments in this situation are correct= this year so far ps3 YoY sales are in fact down, haven't EA, Gamestop other execs and fans called for a price drop?, is the ps3 not expensive compared to 360 when the economy is poor?...although I would say that affects 360 as well but not as much as ps3.

@ ZuperAmazingCooKie, so you wish death on him and his family, WOW even if you're joking thats the stupidest comment I have ever read on n4g, you are a sad little kid, I bet you actually believe in this so called "console war". -Wow...talk about brand loyalty.

JOY

StephanieBBB6238d ago

But there's still alot of salesman talk/BS that he claims.

"It is also a very difficult time economically to try and sell a product at twice the price of your competition."

NPD sales

PlayStation 3 218K
Xbox 360 330K

Japan Media Create Sales: 04/06 - 04/12 (Hardware)

PS3 - 16,701
Xbox 360 - 10,134

Yeah it seems impossible Aron...

" I think it is pretty clear that Xbox 360 is innovating at a much more rapid pace than anyone else in this space and with the resources we have dedicated, I fully expect that to continue for many years to come."

HOME anyone? Life with Playstation? LBP? KZ2's graphics?

This guy must have gotten (innovation) mixed up with (advancement).

NXE is not innovating, it's taken from apple. Gamescore on the other hand was innovating. There's alot of give and take in this department but clearly this is a load of crap to state.

JeffGUNZ6238d ago

This was an interview, he didn't bring up ANY of the questions that were asked, they were ASKED to him. He simply answered them. This has to be one of the best interviews i have seen from him in a while. I agree, that at times in some of his articles, he has taken some low blows at Sony, but not in this one. He would not answer questions that he wasn't sure of and when he stated his opinion, he clearly stated that it was his opinion.

How can you even talk $hit on him for mentioning the price cut when the interviewer SPECIFICALLY asked him about a price cut?

All he did was answer questions that were asked to him, how can some of you people give him $hit for that? If you want to get mad, get mad at the interviewer for asking questions about the PS3. Stop hating this man just because he works for Microsoft, it just makes you look ignorant.

Again, he is being INTERVIEWED, what is he suppose to say "no comment" during the whole thing? Come on people, why you even reading an interview ABOUT MICROSOFT from a guy who WORK FOR MICROSOFT? Go play your "amazing 2009 exclusives" and stop commenting on MICROSOFT related articles.

Jesus, you know how ignorant some of you people look when you call him a fanboy when you are pushing the ps3 and trash talking the 360 in a MICROSOFT article?

Think about it, you'll get it.

slayorofgods6238d ago

"When Microsoft's Xbox 360 Product Management Director Aaron Greenberg talks, people tend to listen."

Whatever, alot of people tend to blow off what Grenberg says because of his addiction to streching the truth and trying "to hard" when it comes to bashing Sony.

Seems almost proud of the fact that they didn't get steamrolled by the PS3 because of the disparity in price. Which seems to be the only strategy they live by.

kenjix6239d ago

Now that he wasted all his money on Repairs and DLC he can't afford a PS3, so he's pushing Sony for a price cut so he can buy one LOL!

JeffGUNZ6238d ago

If you really think that Sony doesn't need a price cut, then you're a moron. In the worst recession since the great depression, you think a system that's double the price of its competitors would sell equal or better? Come on, brand loyalty or not, you have to admit the PS3 needs to be chopped in price. Just because you and your family are doing well, doesn't mean everyone else is.

raztad6238d ago (Edited 6238d ago )

@Jeff

Are you waiting for a price drop to get a PS3? I hope not because the PS3 is not getting a price drop anytime soon and MS knows it, that is why you see Greenberg acting like he is a Sony representative talking about an urgent price drop.

MS is the one scared about the mythical price cut, they just cant drop the price of the entry level 360, again, so their hope is that Sony cant afford a price cut in the short time.

JeffGUNZ6237d ago

I am commenting on someones post. If I wanted a PS3 I would have bought one. So, you are telling me you wouldn't want Sony to make a price cut? I understand that Sony is already taking a loss for every system sold, but they have to do something. My point is there are so many people without work or working with their hours cut, and a PS3 at such an expensive price will not sell well as a system that is half the price. Greenberg isn't scared at all. Microsoft would know $50 off all their systems and the arcade will be $149.99. Which looks much better on paper. Greenber is not trying to do some sort of reverse psychology for Sony. He was asked a question from an INTERVIEWER and he answered it in his opinion. Some people just dig way too deep in what people say.

mastiffchild6239d ago

He doesn't either expect or not expect a PS3 price cut. Have none of us ever listened to a salesman before? That's all Greenberg is , and not a very subtle one at that.

He says they expect the PS3 to cut because it has to so his company looks like it's forcing Sony into doing so for market share. firstly Sony don't have to and secondly they aren't, unlike MS really after market share but just profit.

As ever, but at least with less smack ralk BS this time, he talks loud but says nothing. All salesmen(titles are irrelevant)at MS, Sony or Willy Wonkas are the same and to take any of them at face value makes you a fool. I do wish he learned there was a world outside of the US though as it offends me as a European when he boasts about Live services that we don't actually have.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle17d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7725d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga25d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199225d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga25d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman24d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box25d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion24d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7225d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7525d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit25d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14925d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7725d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
