360 controller might be better for some.. but the Dpad and the battery deal makes it lose IMO.

I also didnt like aiming with the analog so close to my hand...

Basically it boils down to preference. You cant claim a winner overall for everyone.

in my opinion both controllers work well and have small flaws. I actually dont find the 360 controller to be the best for fps games. i find both the 360 and ps3 controller actually equal in this department. what sucks is developers that dont allow you to map your buttons the way you like.

I really like the ps3 controller for action games. I really like hte 360 controller for racing games.

The best controller i've ever held in my hands was the logitech wireless ps2 controller. the shoulder R1/R2 and L1/L2 buttons were situated perfectly giving you plenty of grip without accidentally pressing any buttons. the dpad was also just as good as sony's official ps2 controller.

if logitech could remake that controller for the ps3 with sixaxis i would buy.

i wish i could have one controller for both consoles.

The 360 controller is just a rip off of the Dual Shock and Dreamcast controller. Which isn't a bad thing because it gets the job done.

Having said that,i personally don't like the offset analog sticks and the convex button style.I don't know if anyone has experienced this but i found that the 360 controller slipped out of my hands alot(butterfingers they call me).The controller that came with my PS3,launch60gig,was to be honest,garbage.I picked up a DS3 as soon as they were available,now THAT is a controller.I find the weight of the DS3 to be near perfect and the analog sticks have that spot-on feel.The best thing about the playstation controller is that it hasn't really changed.I only wish it had gamecube controller type button layout with not one but two Z buttons.......yep,sarcasm.=)

The D-pad on 360 is a joke. No one can defend it. It's especially apparent when you play a game like street fighter 4 on PS3 VS 360. Using the stick vs the Dpad isn't as fluid for a fighting game, but on 360 I'm basically forced to use it because the d-pad is so horrendous to do the direction I input.

360 controllers also seem to be made to break the headsets that come with them. Short cord that coupled with the fact you might drop it somehow and bam you have a broken headset because the jack snaps.(I have several friends and myself included who have the metal tip jack you insert stuck in a controller because it breaks so easily)

Next let's move onto the sticks which wear away so easily on the grooves for precision that it becomes worn away. My last 360 controller made my character's in game automatically move forward slowly because the stick was junked up after plenty of shooter play.

You know why Sony hasn't had to change its controller really in all the console generations? It's awesome, works, and I've never had one break or become faulty on me.

To defend the 360 controller a bit though I do love the triggers. They have a great snap to them and are very satisfying in a game like Gears of War. I don't think I could ever have the same fluidity playing Gears with a PS3 controller.

Both controllers have great button layouts and feels, and neither leans more or less in that department for me.

In the end the PS3 controller is a BETTER product that isn't made of cheapo junk. I swear Microsoft makes their products with the intent of faults to force you to buy them more than once. It's a shady practice and you'd have to be naive to not think the accessories for 360 aren't made to break somewhere down the line.

Here I thought I preferred the DS3 but after reading this I guess I was wrong. My bad!

Anyhow, I have both and like them both but still prefer my DS3. The analog sticks feel smoother to me, and I also prefer the "dome" shape of the top of the sticks. But it's all really preference, no one controller is ever going to be the best for everyone.

And light.

To be honest the only thing holding me back from buying a PS3 is its controller. I still remember the hand cramps from the PS2,PS1 days. If anyone knows of any better designed controllers I'll gladly buy a PS3.

There's no point to ANY srticle about which controller is best. It's entirely down to personal opinion born of comfort and suitability for your hands/choice of games.

I'm a lefty with small artistic hands and find the 360 pad very much too much of a reach for me and the D-pad is poor but someone who has different mits and doesn't play games where the d-pad matters might well, reasonably, prefer the 360 pad to the DS3. As a lefty I often wonder if I'd find a mirror image of the 360 pad much better(if they're available like that I have never found one)and my mate likes the 360 pad so much he took the workings out of a DS and managed(sixaxis and everything)to get them working in a 360 shell but can't make it work the other way round quite as well.

Funnily enough they introduced that add on so you can use either just when he finished his-but that doesn't let you have sixaxis control with the 360 pad even then so i guess he's still a clever little git!

But, seriously, are really arguing over stories this weak these days-to make any conclusion has to be totally subjective and worthless until hands are made uniform!

the only people I know who complain about controllers breaking, are the one's who throw them because they suck. I would be willing to bet that is half the people on this site.

My thumbs touch on when I used a ps3 controller. and it is so small I can't stand it. The only bad thing I can say about the 360 controller is sometimes I hit the center dashboard button in a middle of a game.

This is all down to personal preferance. To me theres nothing wrong with the 360 controler, i simply prefer the PS controller better.

Sure there are a few issues, like the fact you can slip off the L&R 2 triggers sometimes, but when i sit down and hold it it just feels right.

However from my experiance the 360 controler is definatly better for FPS. But in every other situation id rather have my trusty PS.

Its all up to the gamer. What may be good for one may not be good for another. Its just depends on what the gamer feels more comfortable with.

I'm soooooo not a 360 hater...I have a 360 and I love it...but I can honestly say I love the PS3 controller better.

Thing is, the 360 controller is a little too big and too clunky for my tastes. The triggers are a little harder than the PS3's controller and that really makes a difference especially when it comes to FPS's. I've been playing (and LOVING) Left4Dead. When I'm done with that, I go online and play COD with my buddies on the PS3. Instantly, you can feel the comfort of the PS3's controller. And the fact that that it's lighter and still delivers powerful feedback and shock gratifies the fact that just because it's big and clunky doesn't mean it has to have all the power. Oh! Has anybody had the misfortune of your 360 controller dying in the middle of a game?? It's awful!! At least with the PS3 controller, you can hook it up to a charger and presto! I have to scramble to the battery charger and replace them but by the time I'm done, I'm already dead.

Don't get me wrong though, the 360 controller isn't bad at all...it's just that the PS3's controller is better IMO.

The PS3 remote feels even cheaply made than the PS2 controller.

Triggers suck and the position left analog stick is made to play games where the games are designed primarily for to be played with the DPad or Last gen games... Yeah.. the PS3 controller is carpal tunnel friendly.

the PS3 uses an USB wire to charge the remote... but this is very annoying for those of us who have large TV setups... the USB wire that comes with the PS3 is like 3 feet long... and even buying a larger wire sucks.

By the way... why the hell the remote loses connectivity when plugging or removing the USB wire?

here is another solution... you can always buy 3-5 PS3 controller that way you always have 1 charged. mmm.. wouldn't it be smarter if Sony made rechargeable battery packs that we can easily switch? mmm.. wait.. the xbox controller does that.

Just as well, I prefer the Playstation controller so much more. The triggers are ok but when playing non-FPS games they're kinda a pain and I prefer just pressing R1 or L1, especially in games where L1 zooms in.

I like the PS3 controller, but I do have a problem hitting L2 while playing Street Fighter 4 though. I don't know why but it seems...awkward.

I have the PS3, and last Gen I had PS2 and XBOX, so I'm pretty familiar with both controllers.

Basically the PS3's D-pad is better while the XBOX's triggers are better. Thats pretty much just fact as anyone who has regularly used both would likely agree.

PS3's is better for Beat em ups like tekken because of the better D-pad, while the XBOX's is good for FPS's and driving games because thats the times the triggers really come into their own.

After that it becomes preference, both controllers feel good in the hand and work well. I personally prefer the larger size of the XBOX's, and the fact the analogue sticks are set further apart.
But I've used the PS controllers for 3 consoles now and they have served me just fine.

It would be nice though to have XBOX like triggers for the PS controller, I've got the snap on triggers that make them feel a little better but they are still not as good.

As a PS fan, I simply like the 360 more: better build quality, feels better in hand, battery option, triggers.

The best location of the analogs are debatable.

I went to a games store to play in a SFIV tournament that I had heard about.

Turns out the comp was on Xbox 360 and not PS3.

I'm glad that I finally did get to try it though, because I've always wondered about what it would be like after hearing all of the good comments about it for so long.

It is seriously one of the worst controllers I have ever used in my fifteen years of playing video games.

If I had to describe it in one word it would be "sloppy".

This is what people have been praising? Curved buttons? Vertical L2/R2? A piece of sponge is the d-pad?

The left stick isn't much better, being to far away for me to use comfortably. It feels warped in my hands. The overall layout makes me feel like I'm holding a prawn cracker.

I've never like the Xbox personally, but I'm trying to be as objective as I can here. It definitely sucks in my opinion.

I'm not even kidding in the slightest. I wanted to like it, I was even looking to buy one for my computer at one stage.

Sixaxis motion sensing.

Wider range of movement in the analogs and the symmetry in there positioning is better for FPS/TPS's.

Causes less sweaty palms because you hold it in your fingers not your palms.

Self contained rechargeable battery is standard. You don't have to spend more money on a battery pack and your middle/ring fingers don't get cramped up from jammed into it.

On my Saitek Cyborg for PC I had to switch the anagloue to PS like controller. Symetrical.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
