Microsoft Needs a Strong Showing at E3 2009

Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "Last year at E3 2008, Microsoft had a relatively strong showing. Games such as Fable 2, Gears of War 2 and Resident Evil 5 were showcased and the biggest surprise of the entire event was revealed. Without the announcement of Final Fantasy XIII coming to the Xbox 360, Microsoft's entire showing may have been considered average. There weren't any surprises besides the announcement by Square Enix and while a multiplatform announcement shouldn't be the star of the show by any means, the alleged "betrayal" of Square Enix caused quite a bit controversy among the gaming community. Sony had a slightly better show last year by showcasing games such as Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Motorstorm: Pacific Drift, DC Universe Online, MAG and of course, God of War III. However, both Sony and Microsoft were comparable at last years show with neither clearly being better than the other but one thing is for sure, Microsoft assuredly needs to reveal something special to compete with what is expected from Sony at this years E3."

Im confident something will be at e3 that people on xbox 360 will enjoy . Obviously i dont know what ,but i do know there will be something xbox 360 owners wont to play.....also multiplats FTW! :)

XxSolid SnakexX6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

because if they did they would've showed something at GDC like they did last year with gears 2 so I think microsoft is doomed.

poindat6224d ago

Bit early to be making predictions of that sort, eh? Anyways, the focus of GDC isn't really on announcing new exclusives, I think.

Microsoft will have something, don't worry. Well, Microsoft better have something; the heads of E3 wanted to make a 'comeback' splash this year, and a good bunch of new exclusives or multiplats will do the job.

Kushan6224d ago

They had a really really REALLY good E3 last year, so good they actually didn't even show off everything they had to show, yet 6 months later people are ready to say MS is doomed, doomed, doomed. Wait and see what they have in store this E3 before proclaiming anything.

cranium6224d ago

I just hope they announce SOMETHING! I am quite tired of hearing "lol 360 has no gamezz!" in the comments section of every single article.

XxSolid SnakexX6224d ago

But see at GDC they mostly announce new games there and ps3 just dominated and I haven't heard one game about 360 other than multi plats and Alan Wake so I guess I can be making early predictions :)

Lifendz6224d ago

None. Unless 1up starts writing about MGS4 and 5 coming to 360.

jwatt6224d ago

It's MS, I'm pretty sure they're going to have something up thier sleeves. Lets not forget how MS can take control of third party support.

MrWeymes6224d ago

The Xbox 360 most assuredly does have games but it needs a better first party line-up. I'm really impressed with the progress that Sony has made with their first party games. The biggest problem that I see with Sony is their lack of JRPG or RPG support in general. However, exclusive JRPGs are not going to win the console war for Microsoft. They only serve to boost the sales in Asia briefly.

I think Microsoft will step up in terms of their first party line-up, though. They could also continue to buy third party exclusives that will sell simply because they are established series.

sonarus6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

I personally don't think microsoft needs to do anything big. They are maintaining a strong sales lead over PS3 and i expect most of their E3 conference to be about Xbox live adding new features and a ton of stuff on how they have improved financially. They will show games certainly but anyone expecting a sudden onslaught of games will likely be disappointed.

Sony on the other hand has no choice but to show more games. Being priced much higher than its primary competitor they will spend most of their time proving why they are better and no other way to prove that than to show games.

Thats just my educated guess i could obviously be wrong so feel free to disagree

crck6224d ago

Very few games that get announced at E3 show up the same year. They may have some good tricks up their sleeve for E3 but it doesn't look like MS will have any new awesome exclusives that will ship in 2k9.

darthv726224d ago

There is something to be said about not saying anything at all. Both sony and ms have the same goal in this console generation. Create buz about their respected system and gain market share (obviously). Sony has always been a vocal company. Talking up what will be out on the horizon with titles like MAG and GoW3 etc and yet MS has been very quiet.

I know the slew of sony loyalists are looking at this as a sign of MS taking a turn and (to them) planning to leave the console market. MS hasnt really been one to speak about projects (other than windows) that are a ways off. They like to talk up what will be available within the time frame (generally a year or less) of the shows.

To think MS has nothing suprising at this e3 is like believing that sony would NEVER have any games for the ps3. I give them credit for really keeping the lid on things this year. Sure it is nice to hear bits and pieces but I find it ever more so enjoyable to hear about new stuff at the big shows. That is what they are for.

I prefer not to have any spoilers but hey.....it happens.

Sheikh Yerbouti6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

...in this case. We know Alan Wake, a new Lionhead Project, Mass Effect 2, etc. are on the way. We are just wanting Microsoft to hype us up for the rest of the year.

Things seems slow the 360, but I'm sure Microsoft doesn't want to concede market share to the PS3, but that is going to happen eventually. Still it shouldn't hurt 360 position in the market. With 3rd party games on the XBox doing well, Microsoft may want to play the game Sony has been playing, and make sure they are turning a hefty profit.

They won't say this, but with the RROD, E74, disc scratch debacles - they have lost money and will continue to pay for these failures. Plus the price drop was necessary to keep Sony at bay for the 2008 holiday. Now they feel they have enough share that they should concentrate on better margins. That's probably why they are saying they already 'won' the US market, although that is a bunch of bull.

Sony should try to capture more share, migrate more PS2 users,...basically follow Microsoft's strategy. I think Sony is inching toward this strategy, but they are still trying to be profitable - hence an emphasis on 1st party exclusives, but no price cut.

Microsoft is dreading a PS3 price cut, but they know this likely won't come soon or low enough to matter for 2009. They know they can't compete with Sony studios lineup, but with heavyweights like Valve and Epic, they don't have to. So they are taking their time and waiting to hit us when it counts the most, during the holiday season. Still a PS3 price check, when it does come, will put MS in check.

Why cater to internet fanboys anyway?

You Already Know6224d ago

I think they will unveil the XBOX 720 for 2010 Holiday season, but most people don't want to hear that sort of news....

but it makes plenty of sense right now...

Lucreto6224d ago

It would be a stupid decision if they announced a new machine in a recession less than 3 years ofter this one.

That is the reason I didn't get a 360 because they just dropped the xbox and I fear they would do it again.

MrWeymes6224d ago

I don't see them announcing the next Xbox either. It would make them seem as though they aren't a reliable company. A lot of people may have just got their Xbox 360 a few months ago. Being required to buy another console already would be the original Xbox all over again. Gamers would probably loose faith in Microsoft as a reliable source of consistent entertainment.

OGharryjoysticks6224d ago

I'm on board. I've been saying the same for close to year now. To the people who think it's a bad time because of the economy is like saying all of a sudden for the first time the economy is going to effect the industry. Sorry, the Wii has a sale rate that has outsold PS2 up to now so the economy excuse is what you can use to talk yourself down from disappointment that your favorite company is about to abandon you again soon. Sure, the economy is crap, but videogames aren't hit the way car dealers are. And when they announce the new system and it costs 350 bucks because it's not really that big of an upgrade outside of fixing the storage and a slight graphic tweak here and there it won't be effected by the economy either.

cranium6224d ago

$350? That's $50 cheaper than an Elite!

- Ghost of Sparta -6224d ago

That would explain the lack of new 360 games.

Head Shot King6224d ago

that it has to be over priced. What is really holding back the 360 is the DVD. Who knows maybe microsoft is thinking some totally different with there console that does not require Blue Ray or DVD, hence making cheaper.

darthv726224d ago

I have a few ideas.

All 360's will now include std hdd. The arcade will get the 20gb while the other two remain the same. Each console will drop in price by $20.
Arcade w/20gb: $179.99
Premium w/60gb: $279.99
Elite w/120gb: $379.99

All will include the standard assortment of stuff. wireless controller, std/hd AV cable, HDMI cable, Wired headset, ethernet cable.

A few updates to the NXE will be announced like updated video format support as well as a new audio download service for songs to compete with itunes. Support to off load your content (purchased music, game videos) to an external device (ipod, zune, etc). Support to import video and music from external source. Web browser (big wish there).

Possibly a handheld announcement (late to the game but still interesting to see) as there was rumors of a new zune with game playing capabilities.

As for real game announcements....I dont want to hear anything until the show. Keep the suspense in check.

Lucreto6224d ago

There won't be much of a first party showing. But there are tons of Multiplatform games this year.

Bioshock
Dragon age
Assassins creed 2
Overlord 2
Brutal legend etc, etc

A great life for a console gamer.

MrWeymes6224d ago

I hope Microsoft surprises everyone with some impressive first party games because Sony is certainly dominating in this aspect. There is no bias in that statement. Anyone with a clear mind should be able to realize that Sony has an incredible first party line-up.

I hope Microsoft doesn't focus all of their energy on multiplatform games and DLC because if there isn't another shocking announcment such as the Final Fantasy XIII announcement made last year, I believe Sony will walk away with this years E3.

swiftshot936224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

Kingdom Hearts 3? Its square Enix, wouldnt be shocking at all.

Metal Gear Solid 4 wont simply because it would mean that Konami would have to invest in restructuring the MGS4 engine and optimize it for 360. Why spend money when not guaranteed a return? It sold well on PS3 I believe.

Ubisoft, Sega, and EA are the only publishers left CHOOSING (No way in hell Capcom will make any game running on the MT framework engine exclusive, LP2 will 100% be multi) to have exclusives these days. Trust me, if Konami could afford it, they would definitely have MGS4 on 360.

Honestly I think MS will showcase the 360 slim and show some new LIVE upgrade and will call it a day in terms of surprises...

MrWeymes6224d ago

Quite honestly, Metal Gear Solid 4 would be the most anticlimactic announcement of all time. It would surely cause a stir on the internet but it's not the kind of news that would get me excited as a multiconsole owner. I've already played Metal Gear Solid 4 and a port is irrelevant to me personally.

Kingdom Hearts 3 exclusive to the Xbox 360 wouldn't be entirely shocking but it would surely be a pretty harsh blow to Sony. Kingdom Hearts is one of the more popular RPG series on the planet. It's right up there with the Final Fantasy series. Also, exclusive DLC for Final Fantasy XIII would be a pretty harsh blow to Sony as well. It would certainly affect the Final Fantasy XIII sales in North America.

As for shocking announcements, I certainly expect one from Microsoft. A dull showing from them at E3 will only fuel the rumours that the Playstation 3 is going to dominate throughout 2009 and 2010.

Arnon6224d ago

Showings expected:

Alan Wake
Mass Effect 2
Forza Motorsport 3
Halo 3: ODST
Crackdown 2
RARE Projects
Assassin's Creed 2
BioShock 2
Dragon Age Origins

Announcements (hopefully):

The Elder Scrolls V
Kingdom Hearts 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy versus XIII
And anything else would suffice

Freak of Nature6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

You're list is a very optimistic one,however.....It's possible.

If they come up with these games and "steal" a game like Kingdom hearts 3 and Rare for example come up strong and show us some of that old magic Microsoft can still go toe to toe with the PS3's strong up-coming line-up.

As a PS360 owner I can only hope so...

I also get the feeling that they are gearing up for the next XBOX (720?),nothing will be mentioned now,but next GDC and E3 10' will be the time. It's as if the plan is to come up with just enough now, hold down the fort, and then pounce next year with the next gen system....

I want exclusives and top tier multi-plats for both the PS360....I sure hope Microsoft come up to the plate swinging and hitting...

Arnon6223d ago

I didn't want people to disagree with me because I listed PS3 games.. I was literally just listing games that have the potential to make it to the console. Any nice announcement would suffice. Even if none of them were PS3 games. I just couldn't think of many games that could be announced as multi-platform that we haven't already heard about.

Zeus Lee6224d ago

I wonder what they can announce that will cause such a splash like FF13 did at their E3 last year.Kingdom Hearts 3 Xbox 360 exclusive?I personally would not be surprised if that were the case,Microsoft are in need of games and Square Enix continue to make horrible decisions.I doubt Nomura would be in charge of it though.

I think LA.Noire will make its official gameplay debut at E3 this year,it's multi-platform so Microsoft will probably have the exclusive unveiling of the game at their conference.Another multi-platform game that will more than likely be unveiled exclusively at the Microsoft conference is Modern Warfare 2.

As for their first party,Halo ODST is guaranteed to make an appearance. We also know Lionhead have 2 projects in the works,so at the least I expect 1 of them to be shown.

CaseyRyback_CPO6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

so i'd imagine it should be ready for e3.

http://blur.com/

Hiruma Youchi6224d ago (Edited 6224d ago )

I just dont know what to expect for MS this year really.

MS took a Huge "L" with Tales of vesperia.

Splinter Cell Conviction is pretty Much M.I.A for 09
Mass Effect is 2010
Alan wake will probably shown at E3 but the game will come out in 2010
Lost Planet will Be Multiplatform no doubt
If there is A Few BIG Exclusives for X360 shown at E3 I doubt theyll come out in 09.

So what's Left? Halo OSDT???? Thats not enough for me. I never Liked Halo Ever Since the 1st Xbox.

Where is Killer Instinc3 , Conker Bad FurDay , Blinxx ??? No more DLC please and more games MS.
