What Price Cool? Mac vs. PC

PC Mag: "There are two major platforms: Apple and Windows, and Macs generally cost more than PCs. Thus ends the latest propagandistic report. But what about Linux?

I'm about to jump on the bandwagon of bashers who took a look at the Microsoft-sponsored report "What Price Cool?" You can read it for yourself if you're looking for a good laugh. And if you want a great tear-down of the details, read the Register story "What Price Nonsense?" I'm more interested in the fact that Microsoft is wasting resources on this sort of report. What audience is it aimed at? What is the point?"

Microsoft loves to brag that they are cheap whores.

Azurite6248d ago (Edited 6248d ago )

Windows is expensive in my humble opinion, unless you mean cheap when they develop things.
But I do prefer Windows over OSX and PC over Mac for that matter.

i fined that u can buy a cheap pc out there but in the long run will cost u more... cause of the anti virus u need to get. and u will need a larger ram to operate vista and if u want screen quality like mac u will need a better graphics card really it will all come out to alot i prefer to get it all in one package thats why im getting a macbook :) ..

Jrome6248d ago

1. The best antivirus programs are the free ones (Fact)
2. Ram is cheap, big deal.
3. From when did graphics card = better screen? It's called buying a better monitor. (Rofl)
4. In the long run Windows PC is still cheaper even when it does come with the full package.

Fail.

You can replace your PC each year and buy a Mac once every three year and still come out ahead with a PC.

Why does nobody complain about the fact that OS updates on Mac OSX cost money. Last I got one of those hostage situation where I could NOT install Adobe Creative Suite due to missing software update, Apple gave me the choice of paying up $70-80 for the update.

I don't use virus scanners and for the most part only use the built-in XP firewall or on occassions ZoneAlarms Free Firewall. Never had a problem in my 15-20 years of computing.

Apple has done an excellent job in marketing their product as if it is a complete package, until you want to add anything to it. Suddenly everything is overpriced. Nothing wrong with Macs, just don't hype it as something it isn't because you will just look an idiot for being fooled by Apple's marketing department.

Macs will always be more expensive than a pc. If a group of hackers were to shift their hate to Apple then you can bet that even a mac is very susceptible to viral attacks. Plus if you do your research on the net there are a lot of free stuff you can get for your pc. I prefer pc's over macs because you can make it as powerful as you want it to be and still be cheaper than a mac.

Viper76248d ago (Edited 6248d ago )

Ppl who want cheap systems should not buy windows or mac and focus more on linux. You cant get cheaper than that :|

No need for antivirus + plenty of opensource programs to get basic job's done. :)

but PC all the way.
Os X seems pretty good tough.

@ IdleLeeSiuLung

there is a difference between an OS X update which is FREE and buying a piece of software worth the best part of £2000 without checking that your mac meets the minimum requirements. Seeing as the latest Adobe Creative Suite runs on both the Tiger & Leopard Operating Systems, I'm guessing you were running an Operating System which is 5 years + old at least.

User didn't check the minimum requirements before spending £2k (or possibly d/w 6GB) by the sounds of it. and somehow that's apples fault.

I wouldn't buy a piece of software designed for Windows Vista when I'm only running Windows ME & expect it to work perfectly. and then blame MS that they dare try to charge me for VIsta as if was a hidden charge.

On the other note.

Macs are too over priced, but if you're like , you paying for the right to use the OS (as it's industry standard in my profession) not to be a 'poser', if you don't like the OS or are a gamer, or want a cheaper option, then there are better OS' for you. Go built a PC and boot it with ubunto,

simple :)

This was for a company I worked for and this was a few years ago. I'm not super familiar with Macs as I haven't owned one personally other than the interaction I get through work i.e fixing them and installing software. The version of Adobe CS was that, the first one (CS1). I didn't check the specs, as I assumed that any updates I needed will be downloaded. I was unpleasantly surprised.

Comparing Vista to ME isn't exactly the same as comparing what I consider minor revisions to Mac OSX. They didn't call it Mac OSXI (eleven), they called it Mac OSX, so why the F am I being charged for an update that is required? I don't care for funky naming conventions like Leopard and then charging me for it. It is still a minor revision.

A similar scenario on Windows would be requiring a Service Pack on Windows. Imagine MS charging people for Service Packs!

In addition, Windows XP is almost 10 years old and still going strong with all majority of software supporting it.

somekindofmike6247d ago (Edited 6247d ago )

@ IdleLeeSiuLung

The Operating system OS X Jaguar to Panther to Tiger to Leopard go far beyond for superficial 'funky' name changes, they have had significant functionality upgrades. Each individual OS has FREE upgrade, for example I'm runing OS X 10.4.11 the 10 stands for OS X which represents the visual appears and how the user interacts with the OS, which has stayed the same for about 10 years now, 4 represents OS X Tiger with significantly added functionality over OS X 10.3 Panther & 10.2 before that and so on, 11 is the version of that OS so I've received 10 free updates for my OS, these are fixes and security updates, the same as service packs.

Now if you were to ask me do Apple release too many Operating Systems, I'd probably agree with you, I think there have been at least 4 this decade so far, but they are reasonably cheap as far as Operating systems go, £80 every 2 to 3 years isn't the end of the world, and you aren't forced to upgrade to every OS, for example for CS1 not to work you must of been running 10.1 released in 2001 to get CS1 working today you would pay £80 to upgrade to 10.5 skipping all the Operating systems in between. so £80 to upgrade an OS from it's 2001 version to 2008 version isn't that bad in my opinion.

A similar scenario would not be windows charging for service packs because service packs predominantly fix the operating system issues, not add functionality. which is what i'd get if I bothered to but OS X Leopard.

Now let me point out I'm not trying to sing apple praises, they are a corporation who want money, and I've pointed out that they do seem to release a lot of Operating systems. but it's up to the consumer to decide which OS they need to buy and not go out and buy them all blindly. key software such as CS4 normally works on the last 2 or 3 OS iterations so in no way are you forced to buy each version.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
