It's actually the first HHG article I've read that made a fair amount of sense, I agree that if they're never really using that much power, it might be an idea to lower it a little and see if they can dent the mammoth cost of the big black beast.

The actual journalistic skills sadly, are completely absent, but the points he makes are fairly valid, if voiced fairly poorly. I think someone who manages to make gaming sound boring needs to take a step back from writing for a little while, or at least writing and then forcing it on the public via N4G.

take god of war II for instance, nobody thought those types of graphics were capable on the ps2 but as devs came to understand the hardware they managed to push the graphics to equal a current gen system.

It can't even run GTAIV in HD resolution like the 360 can.
The ps3 uses motion blur to cover up the jaggies caused by it's ugly 600p resolution. The same with killzone 2, it uses slow turning speed because if it used normal turning speed ( like cod4 ) the game would run at 10fps ROFL.

The exclusive PS3 games look better, because the multiplatform games are graphically equal on both systems (maybe a slight difference, but it's virtually unoticable).

And developers haven't been using all of the PS3's power, so the best is yet to come.

Putting aside the fact that this is a stupid article created by some random gamers, I'll focus on answering the question.

Yes. Right now you're not seeing it being used because of the multiplatform developers who have to develop for other consoles. If those developers did make the PS3 version superior, then that'd be a waste of time for them, seeing as there is no need to - It's still going to sell. If they tried to increase the overall amount of content, then there's a chance it won't fit on the DVD format. To even get close to seeing the potential of the PS3's power, just look at its exclusives.

So, in short - Yes.

Extra power to MS wouldn't have meant much as they lack the talent. This was the problem with the xbox last gen. Apart from Bungie and Lionhead. The xbox power really was left to waste.

Of course it matters. Where the 360 is about to hit a technological wall after just a few years, the PS3 will go on capable of showcasing amazing games long into it's ten year life cycle. Good old Microsoft has jumped the gun again, rushing out a system that's not only prone to meltdown, but also hits the wall far to early in it's life.

Unfortunately, the Wii is proof that the power doesn't really "matter", but I think the exclusives make the PS3 well worth the money now.

i own both but do think the ps3 has the edge with exclusives and the 360 with multi plats.with the ease of development on the 360 i cant see the situation reversing this gen.as for graphics vs gameplay i do like my games to have polished visuals but 2 examples are assasins creed great to look at but crap gameplay imo and the recent l4d average graphics but compulsive online gaming.with great visuals you can tell the devs have really put effort into their game as a whole but a lot do forget to put FUN first.plus on the ps3 vs 360 graphics department i dont think the gap is or will be that big as imo some of the best visuals this gen have been multi plat ie race driver grid cod 4 res5 and esp the upcoming lost planet 2.

but gameplay is king. If the PS3 was far and away the leader in sales for this generation, you would see many more developers making use of it's power. As it is, it's mostly been up to Sony's first party people to raise the graphics bar. At the beginning of the PS3's lifespan we got sloppy ports that had the 360/PC as the lead platform. Now at least developers are making the PS3 lead platform and the result is comparable games. These games are still undeniably gimped so that the 360 folk can have the same game. As cool as the new FF looks, who doesn't KNOW it could have looked better if it had stayed a PS3 exclusive? Ditto for GTA4 and every other big title that has come out for both. 3rd place = less dev interest to show what it can do.

1. PS3 is by far, better in quality;
2. Xbox needs 2 generations (machines) to be as good;

The X360 is pretty damn amazing also, showing evolution in it's games as well. People are just looking at graphics, and not taking in consideration for the artifacts on screen, charecter mapping, and A.I. enhancements....which BOTH the PS3 and X360 are doing. NOTE: HONESTY FROM A PS3 FAN- The X360 is cheaper and never had the price point of the PS3. although the value of the PS3 translates to it's price, the economy has an effect on what people are willing to buy. Speaking on games ONLY, the PS3's graphical power is NOT LEAVING X360 IN THE DUST. From now on, the PS3 will begin to move ahead, but understand that it will be not only competing with the X360, but the new MS system as well. (Which I believe WILL PREFORM AT THE PS3 CELL PROCESSOR LEVEL) Gears of War (Not comparing multi-plats) is DAMN GOOD eye candy, so I see more people saving money until the PS3 goes down in price. (Hey, $399 is not worth it to some consumers.....EVEN SONY FANS DON'T HAVE IT YET!)

TRUTH BE TOLD, the Playstation 3 has shown it's "hyped up" Cell powered capabilities. Again, the evolution of the X360 is also excellent, as shown by the Unreal Engine inspired Gears of War. (Pure eye candy) Not saying it's the definitive system available, but the PS3 has shown incredible improvments in it's games. The Cell Processor is delivering...check out the jump from year to year games. Ratchet/Clank to MGS4 to Little Big Planet to Resistance 2 Killzone 2. (Pretty incredible achievements.) We have all seen God of War 3 and Infamous footage! The Cell Processor is delivering on it's promises. Remember now, the X360 has made some damn good jumps in it's own right too! Sure the specs may not be the same, BUT it's not like the PS3 is making the X360 look like the Nintendo Wii. (No disrespect to Wii owners, just saying.)

There still sad KZ2 murders all the 360 titles.

To be honest, as an owner of both consoles (PS3 and 360), power isn't everything even though I do admit to wanting the best graphics possible.

The xbox was generally considered more powerful then the PS2 and even the gamecube could outshine it at times but the software available on the PS2 was unmatched. It was a brilliant console. I personally felt the Dreamcast was the best console of the last generation and we all know what happened there!

Although I admit graphics are important, quality of games, multi-platforms, genres and 3rd party support seems to win the war in the end. In my opinion, although the PS3 does have a stellar line-up incoming, the 360 is sitting pretty on that front. I love my PS3 but it frustrates the hell out of me that multi-platform games are generally weaker on the PS3 (deny it all you want, try playing FIFA 09 side-by-side, shocking differences). The PS3 has all this potential to be the greatest console of all time and slowly, although I stress SLOWLY, it is creeping towards its goal. Trophy implementation needs to be worked on, multi-platform games must be equal, advertise more (its like the PS3 doesn't exist in the UK) and Home, well, I don't know about you guys. But that sums up the PS3 for me in a nutshell. Potential, potential, potential.

Lets be honest here ok. Of course the PS3 has more power because its carrying a BLURAY player inside of it. Yes the graphics on the PS3 will look better because the system was designed from the ground up for HI DEF entertainment. Movies, games, music etc. So the PS3 will have to be a more powerful system to handle all those features in its guts. I have no reserves about how powerful the PS3 is. But to say the 360 is a last gen system is just stupid to say the least. The 360 is next gen just like the PS3. Even the Wii can be considered next gen with it's new way to play games with Wii motion technology. All next generation features. Microsoft did not put much stock in the 360 when it came to HD formats so therefore dual layers are used. It's cheaper to develop for the system and games are released much faster. The developers make a bigger profit off of their games and can release games more frequently without hiccups.

GOW 1/2 has next gen grapics as well as MASS EFFECTS, FABLE 2 and a host of other games. No they are not developed at 1080p native resolution because everyone still does not have a HI DEF display and microsoft wanted to appeal to everyone....not just the HI DEF jocks. Sony catered to the HI DEF jocks and it hasn't paid off in large numbers yet. Soon I'm sure...but not yet. So more power does matter but only if its being used for ALL games and not just a chosen few. What we have maybe 4 or 5 PS3 games tops that can be bragged about when the 360 has more to speak of. Of course sony fanboys will disagree but 360 owners can attest to this fact that the 360 has released some beautiful games since launch. They may not have played all that great but the visuals were stunning.

A blu ray is a hi def format that if developed on should look better than what's on a dual layer. But what's sad is even though PS3 games are on blu rays majority of them have less visual candy that the PS3. The reason is cost and time. Every developer does not have the bank load to put in all the time and money to release a killzone 2 or MGS4. And I think that is the point of this article. Why only 5 great games out of 200? When they all are pressed on the blu ray format. It seems like a waste to me as well. All that power under the hood with substandard gas being put in it. I have no doubt that the PS3 is capable of incredible things graphics wise but its useless if only less than 5% of the games developed for it uses its full potential.

Why pay so much for it if most of the games, especially multi platform games all look identical or even close to identical. PS3 graphics should be blowing the 360 graphics out of the water just on the strength of its native hi def capabilities. For fanboys bragging rights are more valuable with multi platform games. But sadly that's not the case.

Maybe in the future we will see a huge difference in graphics between the two consoles but for the moment the differences are not there or minimal at best.

Everyone knows one of the main reason it was taking games so long to come out on the PS3 was because programmers needed time to learn the technology. Its seems that they are catching on thus I think we're going to see a lot more games sooner. Also it takes time to come up with quality games. Whether you own PS3, 360, wii or all of them, i'm sure everyone wants great games to play. And great games take time.

how can you even _ask_ whether having more power matters? Of course it does. It won't matter on multiplatform games much, but for first-part and/or exclusives developed SOLELY for the system, of course more power matters. Things have progressed from multiplatform games automatically being inferior to on par on the PS3 and first party games have gone from ok/impressive to impressive/amazing. I don't see that trend stopping, so to even ask if having more power matters seems silly. Check the sizes of the first party development teams for all three current gen systems... Sony's is the largest (by a longshot) and if equality has largely been achieved on multiplatform titles and first party titles exceed what's possible on the other platforms... ok, I'm done... that was a dumb question designed to draw people to watch the show. It's probably worked. I'll probably even watch it, but as far as a question. Yes, it matters. Sheesh.

I own a 360 and for the most part I love my console but I am also wanting to get a PS3. Not because I'm a fanboy but because I can see that the PS3 will be moving towards its full potential. I already have a media center pc in my living room so it wont be for blu ray just for gaming. And so far until recently the PS3 didn't have the type of games I wanted that would warrant me to shell out close to 500.00 bucks for the system. But with GOW III coming out and a few other titles I may take the dive. But I need to see if developers will take full advantage of the power of the PS3......if not I'll wait a little longer.

"Eight cores" my ass. Anyone with basic hardware knowledge knows there is a VAST difference between a SPU and a CORE. The first being that a core is capable of more calculations, and higher calculations, while a SPU is capable of more precise speedy calculations.

Untapped potential my ass. Most of us were using computer's better than the 360 and the PS3 the second they both came out. What exactly is this "untapped potential" supposed to result in? A game that is slightly less 'worse looking' than a computer game?

All of these theoretical abilities of the PS3 are starting to get on my Nerves. Thus far the PS3 has been able to create KZ2(and Uncharted) which looks slightly better than most 360 titles IF you disregard AA, AF, and ambient texture-res. Granted the game has beautiful background and foreground animations. No one has even attempted to develop a deferred rending engine on the 360 even though it is capable. The real issue here is that the PS3, obviously, has more dedicated developers, which is the only thing i am truly jealous Of.

I think we should all just start praying that next generation Sony just pops in a 3.0+ghz Quad-core processor, which is not only better than the CELL but much cheaper to manufacture. The same goes for the 360. As a Sony Fanboy (NOT A PS3 FANBOY) i would gladly pick up a new Sony console, as long as it doesn't contain the unnecessary incorporation of THE CELL and Blu-ray, neither of which i want.

Please do not give me a LIST of other PS3 games that YOU THINK also look better, if you do... you are missing the point.

O.K. When PS2 was inferior graphically to Xbox, everybody said yea its better. Now we have oposite situation, and yes it does matter. At least we dont have to listen that same argument again from Xboxers. We can now play in peace.

The PS3 is a true HD gaming/entertainment machine. I'm sorry but just about every part of the X360 is last gen. Every generation of games get bigger and bigger and more complex. 1st mistake MS did was lack of quality control. 2nd was not looking ahead for gamers in regards to medium storage. HD-DVD could of been their proprietary storage medium. So now 3rd party games are restricted to the size of DVDs. Then the damn disc trays, come on MS even the wii does not have disc trays. Huge power brick too. I could make a whole list of everything outdated on the X360.

Im grateful I own both the PS3 and X360. If I was just a X360 owner I would be very disappointed and bitter. The X360 (IMO) does not have the legs to out last the PS3 and wii. 1st and 2nd party games on the PS3 will only get bigger and more complex as time rolls on. Excellent time to be a gamer if you are a PS3 owner in my opinion.

Yes those two games are great...but those are only two games.....how many other games came out multi platform or not that was substandard compared to what the PS3 is capable of......PS3 fanboys need to admit that sony has been slacking on developer support. They should have created a better developing platform so that developers can access the full potential of the PS3 without cracking the DAVINCI CODE. That is the issue I have with the PS3 right now. Every game on the PS3 should be above the 360 just because the game code resides on a superior medium of media. But sony was rushing just like microsoft. And they decided that they was going to be on top on the strength of the PS2...they gambled and they folded. I know they will come back soon enough but right now there is no excuse to PS3 owners for the substandard library right now on BLU RAY DISCS. Keep it real you can't keep dropping those two or three games to try and ease the pain that your console of choice is not performing as promised. And I'm not talking about console selling numbers. That's why I believe that PS3 owners should have delved into a 360 as well. RROD or not the system has alot of good titles and because you refuse to give it chance you are missing out on some good gaming. Keep your options open and you will enjoy the experience better.

Me I understand that the 360's hardware specs with all the faults you pointed out could be a turn off.....to a sony fanboy but what matters to me besides sexy smaller parts is performance and the games being developed for the systems. All you droids must be stupid to think PS3 is a lot more powerful then the 360. It might be a little at most. The 360 has the better GPU and Ram is better since it's not split in two like it is in the PS3. Blu-Ray is slower then DVD9. The 360 is close to the PS3.

many of whats said is reminiscent of the Dreamcast. For many reasons. the xbox should not have only lost to the ps2, the ps2 should have been second place to the dreamcast. outside of the PC and the N64's GoldenEye the dreamcast was my first true console online experience on a 33.6k baud modem.

by the power alone... dreamcast should have won.. but because of my history with gaming back to tiger handhelds, mini arcade handhelds, standing comic book store arcade stands, coleco visions etc..

as a ps3 fanboy this article is worth thinking about.

Someone besides Microsoft is flaunting the impressive specs, and NOW they don't really matter.

If the 360 was the one with the extra power, then of course it would matter... to them.

If graphics didnt matter we would still be playing games that look like the original Mario and Zelda, just with bigger worlds.

if they want a 10 year life, it matters. Maybe being more powerful will one day get them out of 3rd place. I am going to buy a PS3 or a XBOX360, the xbox may (as or right now) have more games that I want to play. But with a higher ceiling (the PS3) may have the games I want more down the road.

KZ2 (which I own) great game, but visuals are way overrated. Articles like this make people dumb. Do the math, 512 GPU for one and 256 x2 for the other. Disk size could make games bigger but at any given time visuals will look the same. Also, Kz2 took forever to program for. I got my PS3 in 2007 and KZ2 was the second game I bought for the console. Say what you want, but that's not good. Also, God of War 3, and games like that (Heavenly Sword, DMC, Ninja Blade) are waaay overrated. Comparing them to MGS4, Halo, KZ2 is silly. Those criticizing 360 or the PS3 just need to buy the other console and enjoy.

Actually after reading the article, to me.. .it's just a fluff article nothing of much substance in it...
