YouTube deep in dog doo

Fudzilla: "Too many users not enough cash

YouTube is about to go down the gurgler according to Benjamin Wayne the CEO of Fliqz.

Writing in his purple prose stacked blog, Wayne said that YouTube, was an "incandescent tower of video Babel; monument to the sloughed-off detritus of our exponentially-exploding digital culture". Wayne described it as a "Technicolor cataract of skateboarding dogs, lip-synching college students, political punditry, and porn"."

what a pity. Such a nice service

TheAntiFanboy6243d ago

is the fact that the person writing the article knows nothing about punctuation.

indyman77776243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

Seriously I don't see porn on youtube! So what is this article talking about, what PORN! Anyway it was profitable before they bought it. The reason it is not making money now, is because they are taking on much bigger bandwidth, and storage without the ads to back it up. If they where not concentrating on making Youtube the place to go it would be profitable. No need to worry they will over burden it with ads or slash the size of files, or get a better bandwidth deal before it is taken away.

IdleLeeSiuLung6243d ago

Dang! Ten dollars per impression, there is no way an advertiser would pay that even if they had multiple advertisers on one page and video.

They could have probably snapped up youtube now for a lot less than when they actually did now that it is clear that the business model doesn't work.

masterg6242d ago

Youtube has never been profitable.
The reason Google bought it for so much money was because of the huge potential and the limited success of google video.

Youtube was started with $50 million of investor money.
The bandwidth cost alone was $30 million per month at the time Google bought it.

I'm sure Google will find a way to make it profitable. We see a lot more ads on the site now.

The porn tube sites is another chapter. I can not see them making money ever. Their bandwidth costs per user are much much higher and right now the porn biz isn't selling at all because you can get all you want for free.

Tito Jackson6242d ago

Youtube is fine.
Even IF it didn't make enough money, Google makes enough money thru its other resources, to keep it going for a looooooong time. Youtube is huge, and everyone uses it---its not going anywhere.

Mikerra176242d ago

while I agree that google has alot of money, what I cant agree on is that they will continue to shovel money into something that loses it, especially 470 million worth.

Businesses are in it to make money not lose it

JaPo6242d ago (Edited 6242d ago )

This CEO is quite possibly the biggest chump I've ever iEncountered.

See, for every one person YouTube 'damages', it benefits a million more. Can't say fairer than that.

It must be making a fair bit of money with the actually quite intrusive advertising. Somehow don't think they're going to go bust.

I'm sure they'll be able to figure this out as well. It'll probably take some reorganization, streamlining and submission limitations, but they will keep this thing going. There is just too much riding on it.

You Tube isn't going anywhere.

f7897906243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

They've already added ads that pop up over the bottom of videos. How can they not be making enough from that? If they want to drop the bandwidth they need to remove HD videos. It would suck but come on, it's a free video site anyone can upload and watch videos on. That's a pretty good deal.

Edit: Wow I just went to the youtube home page. THERE WAS 1 AD! What the heck? That's just stupid. Google, don't invade my video watching with ads if you don't even put up more ads on the homepage first.

CRAIG6676243d ago

YUP,anyone who disagree's with ya aint got any business sense, how many ppl use youtube per day? how much is that worth...alot.

youtube aint going anywhere, thank god...its my number1 internet pass time-besides xbox live!

IdleLeeSiuLung6243d ago

According to the article, Google have to generate $10 per view and there is no way they can target the ads similar to their search because most people aren't looking for specific videos, but often randomly looking for things. The leads aren't going to be as targeted, coupled with the high cost. Why would you even bother unless you reach a significantly different audience i.e. a new market.

This is highly unlikely.... it will be charity for Google at best.

Rofflecopter6242d ago

i dont think it matters if there are ads on the front page. How long do you spend there? i might type in a search and spend 3 seconds looking at nothing but that search bar. the videos though? overall, ive spent hours watching videos and checking out those pages.

If i were google, id do the same thing. more adds on video pages and less on the front page.

Benjamin Wayne sounds like a hater to me.

I'm not sure of the validity of his claims though. Can anyone clarify the issue to ill-informed people like me?

deathray6242d ago

He runs a competing company. Of course he's going to take shots at youtube. He wants to BE youtube! (he's also an idiot)

marcindpol6243d ago

so what does it mean?

the beginning of death to the free INTERNET?

fcuk world really amaze me more and more..

NegativeCreep4276243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

Gee that'll be a pretty big expense to consider? I mean, I enjoy watching classic film and television clips and my occasional Eric the Midget/Howard Stern sound clips, but all the other gay-a$$ crap like Fred and Chris Crocker will make this a tough decision.

This financial cave-in was meant to happen though. Only premium memberships are charged and even with imbeded advertisements on practically each video (does you guys just hate that?) they need to come up with another method to advertise in order to bring in more money (like maybe full-screen ads in between each video clicked)

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio17d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
