This argument could go on for days. Neither had sharper anything, or better lighted anything, or higher esolution anything. The subtle difference you saw was probably a different codec or something.

It's already been pointed out, but developers don't waste time and money optimising cross platform games. That's why cross platform games are rarely any good. This is precisely the same software and graphical strength, simply converted to the different hardware.

That video is good for a couple of laughs and that's about it.

This just shows that there's not going to be a major difference in Multi-platform titles on the PS3 and X360, which I knew anyway.

Personally, I'm going to wait until 2007 when MGS4, FFXIII arrives, expecially seeing as Assassins Creed it coming to the 360 now.

Why pay more for games when you get get the console and game for nearly half the price of another?

PS2 games looked worse than xbox games and it's not because of 720p , PS2 games were less detailed had weaker AI and had less going on durring gamplay because it was less powerful.

I think both xbox 360 and PS3 fans will agree with this statement. Games don't take advantage of a consoles strength until very late into the developement style.

Sonic isn't finished yet and is still in early developement. Lots of time left to polish this game.

Just because the game is the same doesn't mean that the programmers for each platform concentrated on exactly the same features.

The only way you can truly compare is when the game is finally comes out on both systems 100% complete.

Even then it isn't a very good indication of Hardware strength. Developers could purposely design the game to be relatively similar graphically instead of concentrating on fully utilizing each systems strength.

Why? Let us say for arguement sakes that the PS3 is much more powerful. How would Sonic fans feel on a Xbox 360 if the PS3 version put it to shame. They would blame it on Sega and not their Xbox 360 because MS has done such a good job Hyping the power of their console. By the way this example can be applied to PS3 console owners as well - think about it how many PS3 fans here would by the Sonic game if it suck compared to the Xbox 360 game. We wouldn't.

No, believe it or not the best way to compared systems using software is exclusive content that is not the same game but uses the same effects and is usually design to take full advantage of the hardware.

you finally made our points. You finally admitted the the 360 is next gen. You said that you know that cross platform games will look the same. lol...Thats hilarious. So now people have to decide Halo 3, Gears of War, and GTA 4 or Grand Tourismo next year, and um...well nothing is really confirmed as launch yet. Interesting. So lets break that down. 300 dollars plus the games you want that look the same as 600 dollars and no jump in quality. Lets so a gamer only likes sports games. Which system should he get? I'm just glad you can admit that both are next gen and both are going to be the same with 3rd party games and there is a 200 dollar price difference for it. But I agree the 360 version of sonic did look like it had better lighting. But thats to be expected. I've been following this discussion for quite some time now,even though this has nothing to do with the topic at all im just clearing things up.

First a bit on my background.
I have done an education for computer sciences with a major in 3D graphics development, and I am now working for my PhD.
Since this is so, I have worked quite a bit with hardware in terms of programming and graphics creation.

Let me warn all of you, sony is overhyping it's product once again, like they have done before.
And I am amazed to see how biased several of the webpages and magazines are.
They all try to downsize Xeon and Xenon technology, but with the arguments and testcases that most of these sources come up with , Cell and RSX will often come out way worse, yet that's a thing they do not show us of course.

Many people don't seem to grasp that ATI's Xenon truly is a revolution in terms of pipeline architecture.
Unlike the RSX the Xenon is truly next gen,
Xenon revolutionizes powermanagement within it's core, so it doesn't need all the mhz's to create a massive output.

The unified shader architecture also gives developers way more playground, and the Xbox 360 will certainly be able to incorperate more ways of instruction for creating and rendering the graphics on screen.
The RSX on the other hand will have it's massive clockspeed, but it will use it in a less efficient way.

Anyway, with the specs of both consoles now fully released it is possible to do a REAL TIME comparinson of the 2 consoles,your about to see what most of the sony representetives didnt want you to see.

Comparing these two GPU's is like comparing Apples to Banana's.
RSX on paper will have certain advantages over Xenon, and Xenon will have certain advantages over RSX.

There is the element of co-operation with the CPU we also have to consider.

Ok, lets put up the specs for the RSX as published.

- 550 Mhz

- 51 billion dot products/sec count's for total system performance

- 300 Million Transistors

- 136 shader operations per clock

good now that's for the facts as presented to us, we have 550 MHz of power to work with

The Cell and the RSX together are capable to produce 51 billion dot products.
I think it is interesting to take a closer look at this claim especially, since I worked with this bit while the specs of both consoles first became public, the important thing is that mnay people just compare the seperate peices of each console to PS fanboys and PS3 no-it-alls it will be music to there ears, but to us who know about computers and know how to compare them,ill tell you one thing, sony has lost alot of its credibility ;).

Anyway.
Since the Cell will have 7 DSP's all being able to do a dot product per cycle, we have some numbers to work with, we can put the numbers in a small calculation.

7DSP * 3.2(ghz) = 22.4 billion dot products/sec for the CPU

since we had 51 billion in total , we will have to substract them to know what is left for the GPU.

51 - 22.4 = 28.6 Billion dot products

When you devide this number to the clockspeed of the GPU you will get 52 ALU operations per clock as they are called.

Now as stated before, the RSX's architecture is not that different from the GeForce 6800 and so it will use Vector4 standards.
Since ATI's architecture is done with Vector5s it will handle the material a bit different.
Now there also the Multiply Add instructions, in short MADD instructions to work with.
In plain English MADD means that the vector graphic will be recalculated to it's precise position, and the instruction always sort of double checks before we get output, that's why we have throw in the 2 value in the end calculation.

So, what we have here is this.

52 ALU ops * 4 floats (vector4s) * 550 (clockspeed) * 2 (MADD) =228.8

Gflops for the RSX and Cell as a team.

If we do the same with the specs of Xbox 360 we will find that it does the following, all the numbers provided through the same calculation though with the Xeon the dot products are devided over it's 3 cores.

48 ALU ops (less than PS3) * 5 floats (vector5s better than PS3) * 500 (less than PS3) * 2(MADD) = 240 Gflops for Xenon, and Xeon as a team

This is one example of how this Xenon GPU together with the Xeon does more with less, and in this case it will give slightly better graphics.

So in theory we have a more powerful RSX with more Mhz's at it's disposal which due to some limitations within the architecture can not be used to it's full potential.

overall the RSX basically is a current gen processor which is overclocked, since it's architecture is not that different from it's predecessors.

I think in the end it will most definately come to the creative sollutions of the game programmers..
Which is when the xbox 360 wins overall as What many people are missing is that the new architecture of ATI opens new ways in terms of graphical development, and the 3 core CPU helps greatly too,as ahmed said earlier:

which is why developers can now ponder new ways of programming, while for PS3 Developers will be bound to the more conventional ways of programming, and the power will be harder to effectively program.

So in terms of hardware the Xbox 360 definately will be able to deliver more performance.

Not to forget the price too. the ps3 will be $499 for the low grade and $599 for the premium grade,and the games cost $60-? each.But the thing that bothers me is that with the xbox 360 all you have to do with the core console is buy a hard drive and it wouild be a premium console,but for a low grade ps3($499) it has alot of features missing that you cant just buy that sony said the console will have,such

No xbox title is go to disrupt the ps3 launch. People will buy ps3 no matter what crap MS throws out.

When the PS3 is finally available, people will make real-world comparisons. Until then, it's all speculation.

I personally feel that aside from the higher 1080p resolution capability of the PS3 (which most American/European consumers will not be able to utilize), there will be no major noticeable difference between the two consoles...regarding graphics.

The games that will really shine will be the exclusive titles and first-party titles that take advantage of the the console's full power. Then we can, "ooooo" and "ahhhhh" at the quality of the respective games.

And if that's the case, then I know I've made the right decision with the 360. I have little interest in most of the first party and exclusive titles scheduled for the PS3. (Titles like "Metal Gear Solid" were ok back in the day...when I was tween. But I've grown up and can't deal with the moronic storylines, confusing dialog and idiotic plot twists). And don't get me started with the, "giant enemy crabs"! Sorry to get off topic.

lol which is more powerful?? Does it matter? Last gen the xbox was way more powerful then the ps2 yet i hated the original xbox. I couldn't get into it. I had my ps2 since 01, and loved it. Yet the xbox was infact better quality in both hardware and software. This time around, im all about the 360 and not remotely close to be interested in the ps3. I mean you like what you like. The ps3 can be more powerful then the 360 and i couldnt careless, so for me which one is more powerful is irrealavant. Just enjoy your purchase.

I'm assuming that both these videos are of the same quality. I did see a difference in color, but it's already been pointed out before looking at some Gundam video comparison made months ago. Fast forward the vid to 1:50, he starts with the 360 than switches to the ps3, you see the cliff wall's behind him immediately stand out, then when they switch back to the 360 it becomes more earthy again. I think for a cartoon-esque game I'd prefer the bright vivid colors of the ps3. But, I wouldn't be caught dead playing Sonic anyway.

I hate to say it, but the PS3 looks better. It's obvious the PS3 version has a more clear, vibrant picture while the 360 version looked somewhat smudgy and fogged out. Could this be the difference between 720p and 1080p?

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
