Why Can't We All Just Have One Console?

SCRAWL's Sal writes "Imagine a world where three companies weren't competing in a console war, where profits were shared and where you could play Mario, Halo, and God of War on one system. Imagine a world without fanboys, but a world full of fans of games. That's a world with one console."

yah one console and no worries... goes to show capitalism can bite you in the ass sometimes..... didnt i hear apple joining in the console race? anyways one console world is like lord of the ring's middle earth ... fiction! never gonna happen

how about a set of standards for all consoles that could enable cross-platform gaming in multiplayer? For multi-plats anyway

dragunrising6267d ago

I like that idea! If consoles were cross compatible the console wars could be decided easily. I couldn't support one console. I would be far too expensive. Competition is what keeps the prices low. Not only would the console be expensive but the cost of software would go up as well. Last but not least, I want a console I'm able to import all of my achievements and trophies.

@ Shroom

That would be great. I would love to play with people on different consoles. However MS would have to really change how XBL works. Right now they have the enormous XBL servers of which everyone uses to play PVP regardless of the game. There are no dedicated servers for the games. PSN is client server where users connect to servers that the game publishers contract with. While the systems process the data differently they could be made to send and receive a standardized form of data. But MS would have to allow the users to connect to outside servers, and I don't they would let that happen.

I've been talking about that idea for a while with friends. It would lead to the best epic online play ever. Fanboy wars would be truly virtual.

Shroom6267d ago

in a limited sort of way. FF XI is cross platform online:
PC-PS2-Xbox360. It would most likely fall on the makers of the games to implement such an idea for gameplay.
I'm no programmer, but seeing as it has already been done, why not?

ANOTHER articel on the same subject. We all know why there shouldn't be just one console. No need to go through it all again...

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle28d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg34d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree34d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai33d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde35d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy35d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

DivineHand12535d ago (Edited 35d ago )

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
