Sony Wouldn't Be Sony Without...

In the video game world, competition never ceases, and to remain a contender, each console manufacturer needs to maintain an identity among consumers and offer them something they can't get on any other platform. This weekend, TGR will take an in-depth look at the games -- one key franchise for each company -- that make Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony what they are today.

Which of Sony's franchises is the absolute biggest and most important?

Kratos' badassery is certainly identifiable as Sony's flagship title, but I wonder what will come of the series after the 3rd chapter.

Trollimite6252d ago

but sony is made up of many differnt games that apeal to differnt people.

there is no, "ultimate" franchise for sony, just a lot of great ones.

if god of war didnt exist there like 16 other games that could step up and be the flagship.

sonarus6252d ago

I disagree. Gran Turismo is more representative of sony considering they have been with them since the original Playstation. GOW is a great game but sony was sony long before GOW. You can't say the same about Halo for Xbox or Mario for Nintendo

ThanatosDMC6252d ago

I disagree. The PS brand never had a definitive franchise since it's composed of many different franchises that made Playstation the Playstation we know and love today.

It was Devil May Cry for me. Kratos has nothing on Dante.

Snake
Final Fantasy
Tekken
GOW
Gran Turismo
nayghty dog
insomniac

thanks

TheDude2dot06252d ago

The defining franchise for the original playstation was no doubt Crash. Whoever had that game back then got all the girls, no joke.

SuperM6252d ago

Gran Turismo is the defining franchise of the PS3. One of the best selling franchises in the history of gaming and by far sonys biggest franchise. Every game in the series has sold aproximately 10 million copies.

LoVeRSaMa6252d ago

Just without 1 small part of there gaming division, multibullionaire company anyone?

In terms of popularity and worldwide sales,Gran Turismo is Sony's biggest franchise.

To put it in better perspective,it's sold more copies than all God of War games,Halo games, and Gears of War games combined; So it's the one game that Sony values most(Hence the reason why it's not being rushed for release).

Very few games can match the success of GT(And by very few I mean it's mostly Nintendo and EA games that have surpassed the franchise)

cain1416252d ago

Your probably right about GT; however, I'm more interested in games with plots myself. Sony has done a great job with racing with GT, but it's still just a racing game.

Viewtiful6252d ago

GT is huge, but I think that's mostly a European audience. So while it is big for them to maintain a Euro following, there are also other very important games in the other territories.

I would even go so far as to say Dragon Quest or Kingdom Hearts could be just as important to Japan as GT is to Europe. Ditto with God of War/Killzone to North America.

cain1416252d ago

@2.2

Yeah I'd agree with that. I will never understand the appeal of PES and I'm sure many Europeans will never get Madden...

cain1416252d ago

I still normally think of Snake when I think Sony, but maybe thats just me... Though I can totally see Little Big Planet becoming a very prominent face for them.

redsquad6252d ago (Edited 6252d ago )

I also tend to think of Snake as a Sony figurehead, but Sackboy makes more sense simply becaue he can become any other major Sony character: Snake, Helghast, Kratos or whatever, yet still remain identifiable as Sackboy. Two franchises advertised for the price of one!!

Clumzyagent6252d ago

To me its not so much what Franchises Sony has that makes them who they are, its the developers they have working for them. All of them make solid games, and for the most part can deviate from their franchise and try out new things like Insomniac did with Resistance. Its great to keep the developers from developing sequel fatigue while bringing out solid AAA games on a yearly basis.

Alanah Addresses God of War's Sex Scenes

Alanah Pearce, who was a writer at Sony Santa Monica for several years and worked on God of War Ragnarök, has shed more light on the sex minigames which cropped up in the series' earlier entries.

Other than looking like that, why does anyone care about what she has to say about anything?

So let me get this right Corey said he didn’t want to spend 15 years of his life on the one franchise and decided to do a new IP which is why he didn’t do Ragnarok…but his new game is now a God of War prequel about a character who’s dead using Norse mythology.

I don’t get it, I thought it would be a brand new IP

Lightning7768d ago

Corey's game was suppose to be a new AAA scifi game. If it's GoW spin off that shouldn't take 8 years to develop, its kinda weird.

I think it got scrapped.

Christopher68d ago

Not sure, but if it's a new IP with new writers, new concepts, and the like that formed up mostly after the last game, I wouldn't expect much out of them for another two years at least. I'm not saying it isn't canned, just he wouldn't start on it until Ragnarok was done and they have a long cycles for new IP development.

Santa Monica has built up enough and utilizes other in-house Sony studios to support their stuff often, so I wouldn't be surprised if they can juggle many new games at once. Especially with Sony now pushing for more support after their Live Service decisions.

Cacabunga68d ago

I hope we get something to get excited about.. has been dry for a long while from WW studios

Eonjay68d ago

What are you basing the idea that the GOW spinoff is Corey's game? Wouldn't that make more sense to have the team that did Ragnarok produce the rumored title?

-Foxtrot68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Why? Because it’s been 8 f***** years at this point since the 2018 game.

Corey’s is expected since he’s been working on his for longer

To have the God of War Ragnarok team put out Valhalla DLC and this new title 5 years after the last game while Corey’s is still a no show would be insane at this point.

The leakers point to this being his game aswell.

Profchaos68d ago

I agree i think i smell shite

KyRo67d ago

I hate how predictable Sony Studios have become. They are pretty much the GOW, Horizon and Spiderman studios now. They are great games but let's mix it up a bit. We used to give Xbox sh*t back in the day for being the Forza, Halo, Gears rinse and repeat but Sony is becoming the same.

Eonjay67d ago

The next four games coming out from Sony Studios are:
Marathon
Saros
Wolverine
Intergalactic
This is after Ghost of Yotei and Astrobot. So its more than a bit of a stretch to claim the are only doing God of War, Spiderman and Horizon.

KyRo67d ago

Eon, Marathon is on other platforms and something Bungie was working on before the Sony buyout.
Wolverine is yet another superhero third person cinematic melee combat game.
Intergalactic is another cinematic, third person melee combat game from what we know.
Saros is nothing more than Returnal reskin so far. It's all very boring, uninspired and safe.

Releasing other games doesn't mean they're not heavily relying on the same IPs over and over again just as Xbox did back in the day.

__SteakDeck__67d ago (Edited 67d ago )

@KyRo Now you’re contradicting yourself. First you say, PS is releasing the same franchises. But when @Eonjay gave you a list of the new franchises PS is working on, you’re going back to the usual Xbox fanboy talking points, saying they’re just more 3rd person games. Just be quiet man. Also. I wonder if you have the same take about Nintendo because they have been releasing the same franchises for 40 years.

__SteakDeck__67d ago

@-Foxtrot Seems like Cory had this planned for years. https://fandomwire.com/it-i...

He also teased it in his IGN interview after GOW 2018 released.

Lightning7769d ago

So they were suppose to be working on s New AAA IP something in the scifi genre. Did that get scrapped? They pulled back on LS and refocusing on the platform. Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip

LucasRuinedChildhood69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

"Does that also mean less risks in the AAA space and going back to the same ip"

Sony Santa Monica games:
Kinetica (2001) - PS2
God of War **(2005)** - PS2
God of War II (2007) - PS2
God of War III (2010) - PS3
God of War: Ascension (2013) - PS3
God of War (2018) - PS4
God of War Ragnarok (2022) - PS5
God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla (2023) - PS5

Spin-off God Of War games from other developers:
God of War: Chains of Olympus (2008) - PSP
God of War: Ghost of Sparta (2010) - PSP
God of War: Sons of Sparta (2026) - PS5

Lightning7769d ago

It was rumors they were doing a game that wasn't GoW at all but a brand new IP entirely.

fr0sty68d ago

Likely another team doing the new GOW while Corey works on the new project.

Mr Logic68d ago

You're confused. The sci-fi game was being directed by Stig Asmussen after GOW3. They worked on it for 3-4 years until it was canceled and he left the studio.

Extermin8or3_68d ago

The science fiction game was scrapped a decade ago. People are getting stuff mixed up. We never had any info what Corey's project actually was.

Zeke6867d ago

He said himself "I would love to do something completely different, sci-fi would be fun to explore" We will see what I do, but I wont work on next God Of War".

That was just months after GoW 2018 was released.
So nothing gets ""mixed up". When he said that most of us hoped he would indeed do a sci.fi game to mix things up a little. Sadly Sony seems to have pulled the reins on that.

Extermin8or3_67d ago

@Zeke68 Sony have pulled the reigns on nothing there is literally an interview form about 6 years ago where he talks about the fact he has a prequel story he'd like to see told but it has to come after Ragnarok. He even hints at Faye being playable/protagonist. The game won't be called god of war either apparently.

Jin_Sakai68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

Try something new already!

__SteakDeck__67d ago

Do you want Nintendo to try something new as well? Because they keep releasing Mario and Zelda. GOW is PS’s biggest franchise. You don’t move on from that.

GrmpyolGamer 68d ago

If that's true then it's not really a God of War game then is it

jznrpg68d ago

If it’s fun with a good story I am fine with it. Definitely unexpected but that could end up being a good thing. Only time will tell.
