Will Kojima Sacrifice Quality For Multiplatform?

PSXE writes: So we all know that Hideo Kojima will reveal his new project at E3 in June, and we're anxiously anticipating the unveiling. However, it seems to be a commonly accepted theory that this new title will be made for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Historically, Kojima has always sided with Sony's brand but he has admitted that he'd like to see his studio appeal more to the Western masses, and considering that, it would make sense to include the 360 in their future plans. But as we've said before that if a developer wishes to focus entirely on the PS3, they can make better strides (just look at the current and future PS3 exclusives), we have a question: if Kojima does a multiplatform game, will it fall short of the quality we saw in MGS4? Would he even allow that to happen?

MS wont allow shoddy multiplayer when MGS finally hits the XBOX 360. It may be easier to just release it on netflix.

But I will still be getting it for PS3 because of the better controller. O.o

original seed6243d ago

I wouldn't mind re-buying MGS4 for my 360. I actually prefer the 360 controller.

WildArmed6243d ago

Yeah, i prefer the ps3 controller. Gotten to love it from the PSX days.

I dont mind if it goes multiplat., since they'll probably keep the ps3 as the lead platform as it works out better for porting 2 360. and sinc ethey have the ps3 engine up and running,
Either way, the more people enjoy the MGS legend, the better ^^
(ofcourse, avoid the multiplayer like a plague xD Its all about the legendary single player!)

YungXclusive2K96243d ago

I can guarantee if this is MSG5 and not some kind of spin off. It will be exclusive to the trey

cayal6243d ago

MGS will not hit the 360.

uxo226243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

How can you guarantee something like that when you're just some dude sitting on someone elses furniture playing games that we probably purchased by someone also..lol j/k

thereapersson6243d ago

Your comment is so double sided that you can't tell what people are agreeing or disagreeing with

Dragun6196243d ago

Honestly, I don't the next MGS will be multiplatform because of what Kojima is trying to achieve with his vision as quoted

"When we first showed the game engine at Tokyo Game Show, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress."

Hell, He even stated that blu ray wasn't enough for him
http://kotaku.com/362807/ko...
He used a 50gb blu ray for MGS4 and he doesn't have enough space? How would that even work with Xbox360 if it can't even keep up with some games such as Rage and Red Fraction and the fact that it uses DVD's.
You would need like 4-5 discs for MGS4 on xbox360 and thats probably when the whole games compressed.

Red Fraction Guerrilla pushed the xbox360 to its limits

Rage Will Look Worse on 360 Due to Compression

Kojima likes to improve his games sepecially with the MGS series not downgrade them.

1UP: With your debut of the Tokyo Game Show Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer, which has seen wide distribution in both Japanese magazines, online, and in the U.S. Official PlayStation Magazine recently, it really heralded the dawn of the next-generation. Everything else has been polished and nice, but this was so powerful, so compelling you even had to do a real-time demonstration at TGS to prove it was running on PS3 hardware. That said, it makes you wonder how much of a gap there is between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Do you think you could create MGS4, technically, on 360 if you wanted to?

http://www.1up.com/do/featu...

Hideo Kojima (HK) says: Yes, that's technically possible. I want to express, first of all, it's not that I don't like Xbox or 360. It's just that last year, our hands were really tied to MGS3, so the other Konami developers were able to get their hands on the 360 tools and hardware earlier. But we simply didn't have time to do that last year. So, meaning that we were behind the other developers in terms of 360 development. Kojima Productions has this philosophy that we want to be the first in everything regarding new technology. So after we finished MGS3, the option was to work on the PS3 to try all the new things for Metal Gear Solid 4. The only reason for this is I'm the kind of person who wants to be the first person on the moon, and don't want to be asking "what the moon was like?" from other people. So that's the real story behind selecting PS3.

1UP: It's interesting that you think you could do this on 360, though.

Hideo Kojima (HK): Maybe some nuance or a small details here and there might be different, but I feel that hardware is no longer a matter. I'm just talking about PS3, 360 and PC. Revolution is totally different, but there are really no differences among the other three.

NOTE: Hideo Kojima (HK) said: Yes, that's technically possible. I want to express, first of all, it's not that I don't like Xbox or 360.

About --> Rage looking worse on the Xbox 360:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008...

UPDATE!

id Software's John Carmack said: "All of the key scenes, the things anyone is going to take a screenshot of are going to look exactly the same on both platforms. They'll (Xbox 360) get the high quality compression. But if you go into some areas in the wasteland, like behind a fence where nobody will typically go and explore, this is where the 360 version may look a little blurry compared to the PS3."

About --> Rage have content cut in the Xbox 360 version:

http://www.shacknews.com/on...

id Software's Tim Willits said: During my talk today I mentioned that we originally wanted to have around 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands. Mostly because we were going to be shipping on two DVDs for the 360 and felt that it would play better with one large wasteland on each disc so there would be no loading between wastelands. Not loading levels while you drive around is a much better decision regardless of platform.

id Software's Tim Willis said: There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.

Sarcasm6243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

Honestly, the next game could be multiplatform. A lot of signs are pointing to it.

But I liked what I heard from his GT interview,

"Yes, we could push the Playstation 3 much further"

Dragun6196242d ago (Edited 6242d ago )

@ All-3
I didn't say MG4 wouldn't work on Xbox360 but that it would look worse because of the high compression on DVD's compared to Double Capacity Blu Ray (50gb) uncompressed data streamed at a good constant rate along with some installs.

Also for I mentioned Rage because it too is being Compressed to fit on probably two Double capacity DVD's (8 gb) thus forcing them to remove 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments and instead make one big wasteland for each disc. Thats like Mass Effect's planets were all put together into one big Planet. Though i hope this one big wasteland will be epic.

Also i mentioned Red Fraction because its a multiplatform that pushing Xbox360 to its limit well at least thats what the Dev's claim.

@ Sarcasm

You know it might go multiplatform but i still think it won't just because i think Kojima is one of those guys that just want to be the first to break the barrier or like reach the moon first.
"The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step" -Kojima on MGS4 development

But either way, its definitely going on to the PS3. :)

jammy_706242d ago

if new game is true anyway
putting it on 360 aswell, the games graphics will suffer and maybe the length of the game
KEPP it ON PS3!!!!!

barom6242d ago

If Kojima is still on a mission to make the impossible possible. Then I guess it would be easier to reach that goal by developing on one platform. Then again, maybe that's the impossible he's trying to conquer. Who knows, he may just make the best multiplatform game that'll stand toe to toe with the exclusives as far as both the technical aspects (read: graphics) and the entertainment aspects (read: fun factor).

I'm laughing @ those that have disagreed with direct quotes!

We have seen your BS before. You spouted the same nonsense during MGS4s release. It didnt happen. None of it did.

What makes you think its going to happen now. MGS4 is a proven succes story both financially, commercially and received the highest critical acclaim.

The only way you will ever get to play one of the best games of the century, is if you get your act together and buy a PS3.

"but, but, but not everyone can afford a PS3"

I beg to differ. PS3 is 399 and if you saved up 20 bucks every month since December 2006, you would have 480 bucks by the end of December 2008. Thats excluding money from birthdays, and part time jobs. Just allowance.

But we all know that instead of saving money, you took the different road: the hate road. Instead of saving so you could enjoy the real next gen gaming, you wanted it to fail and thats why so many of you are on the net talking shiat about PS3 at every opportunity you can. Your fanboy BS is getting old and delirious. Because nothing you people come up with, is going to happen. That should be clear by now. Not with all those Triple A games Sony will continue to pump out.

EITHER GET IN WHILE YOU STILL CAN AND ENJOY NEXT GEN GAMING, OR MISS OUT ON THE GREATEST GAMES, GAMING HAS TO OFFER. The choice is yours. BECAUSE THE PS3 ISNT FAILING OR GOING TO FAIL BUT THE 360 IS!

Socomnick is a delusional fanboy. PS3 and 360 are not equal in terms of power and hardware. PS3 beats 360 by a factor of 20. And the games prove it. No 360 game is technically better than Uncharted, GT5, MGS4, WipeOut, Motorstorm, KZ2, Infamous etc.

And Socomnicks claims are hilarious and false lies. GTA4 and Re5 were BETTER on the PS3, not worst. Re5 on the 360 suffers from SCREENTEARING, but in his fanboy logic he thinks 360 is better lol.

IzKyD13316242d ago

"so we seriously doubt that he'd give us a lackluster production simply for the sake of appealing to more gamers on the 360."

Thats exactly what Square Enix is doing

ZeroBlitz6242d ago (Edited 6242d ago )

I think it's as simple as Kojima wanting to make the best games possible. He's not going to give a damn whether he can make more sales by making a game multi-platform.

Perhaps if MGS4 hadn't done as well as it did, Konami would have been able to force his hand. But, as it is he's going to continue working with the best hardware available to him.

If another team wants to port the code as best as they can, I doubt he'll care. But he'll make sure his version is finished to the best it can be and won't let it hinder the quality of his game.

Edit: @18, Kojima isn't Square-Enix.

about next kojima project i don't mind if it is multi as long as PS3 included

pain777pas6242d ago

Kojima will do what's best for himself and Konami.Truth is the don't do multiplats that often. It depends on his vision and tech specs. Truth is that with games like GOW3, Uncharted2 and Infamous in front of his face and the cryengine running on the PS3 if you want to make the wow game this gen the PS3 is sort of your best bet and his team is familiar with the hardware. But I really don't care either way I love games if his vision is diminished due to it being a multiplat then I'll rant, if not game on.

ThanatosDMC6242d ago

If im going to be Raiden on MGS5, i had better move like a *ucking Ninja on constant supply of epinephrine! Raiden better move and kill like he was doing in MGS4.

That's an all out action game for him like Devil May Cry. We saw him take bullets like they were nothing when he fought those Geckos remember?

commodore646242d ago (Edited 6242d ago )

I find it so terrible sad and unsettling to see ALL-3 post undisputable KOJIMA QUOTES that destroy all the rabid ps3-fan illusions, yet he gets buckets of disagrees.

What is the logic behind that?
I wonder how many bubbles the Sonyfans took, just because he posted facts that they didn't want to hear.

Come on Mods. Can't you see the system is broken?

Sony fans, grow up!

indysurfn6242d ago

Okay, right. But me I will go for the better graphics. We know what happens with multi platforms they sacrifice quality for multi platforms. The graphics, frame rate, AI, and because of frame rate the controls suffer. And 19 times out of 20 it suffers on the PS3. Now that may not be the publishers doing because Sony made the machine. But Xbox360 owners are getting a game that will run on PS3 even if half the frame rate. But could have been so much more on 360. At least PS3 owners get a chance to play a lot of multi platform games but I wish they would be exclusive to xbox360. Can't have everything. Keep your controller I will get the better graphics version any day.

WildArmed6241d ago

I guess if you havent noticed..
MGS4/Uncharted/Killzone 2 are the best graphics any console/PC have to offer.

So.. what was about that having 'graphics'.. lol
Just coz they made 360 the lead platform on some multi-plats doesn't mean 360 has better graphics. Burnout has already shown that..

... Reality check.

either way it will still come to PS3 why let a great game engine go to waste

Game13a13y6243d ago (Edited 6243d ago )

and lets hope the PS 3 version won't be dragged down because of the inferior 360 hardware ......... i'm already upset that GTA 4 and RE 5 were both downgraded for the same reason. (look at the lenght of RE 5 single player for proof, it's essentially no different than RE 4, way to go damnit)

socomnick6243d ago

Your argument is invalid, both gta 4 and resident evil 5 came out better on the 360, if anything the ps3 version held back those 2 games. Gta 4 ran at 720p while the ps3 version ran at 640p, resident evil 5 for the ps3 is blurrier and is missing many of the graphical features the 360 version has. The ps3 and the 360 are about equal in power, mgs 5 would have no problem running on either system.

Dragun6196242d ago (Edited 6242d ago )

I think Game13a13y meant that Resident Evil 5 and GTA4 were limited in terms of content because of the space available on DVD.

Which i think would be true for Resident Evil 5 as you can beat it in 8-10 hours and that's on hard mode which the whole game equals to 7.3gb of compressed data on a dvd. Just Imagine if Resident Evil 5 Was exclusive on PS3, They could have expanded their ideas within the game and added more content, story wise and online to which would fit easily on a Double Capacity Blu Ray disc (50gb) compared to one DVD(8gb)

Don't get me wrong though RE5 was a great game just thought it wasn't worth $60 a purchase for 8-10 hours campaign and then buy the online multiplayer DLC for $5. It was more of a Rent than a Buy.

And as for GTA4, i'm pretty sure it was limited in development
because rockstar made this statement which indicates that they had to give up on some ideas.

"Rockstar stated awhile back that they did not like the storage limit for their game. They wanted to keep it on one disc, but to do this; they had to sacrifice much, according to Rockstar. They have also stated that they do not want to have such a small capacity with the next Grand Theft Auto."

Graphics shouldn't be what gamers want at least the most, but more of what the Content (Story/Gameplay) a game delivers.
EX Persona 4 which doesn't beat graphically any current gen game but it does beat every rpg this gen in terms of content, story wise and gameplay wise.

Rockstar's Statements

Resident Evil 5 = 7.3gb

Argento-Nox6242d ago

@socomnick

Are you sure about that, b/c I'm certain Sam House from Rockstar warned MS right after GTA4 came out that it's dvd capacity would limit what they want to do for GTA5, clearly disputing your claim that the PS3 is holding multi-platform games back.

I think the whole multi-platform card isn't something 360 fanboys can use anymore considering most multi-platform games look and play the same, unless your using a microscope to look for minor details. I'd really like to see you explain why a game like burnout paradise had all the extra tracks, day 1 for the PS3, while the dvd version wouldn't allow it for the 360 version. Rather, 360 fans had to download it 3-4 weeks after the release date. While your at it, explain all the multi-platform/multi-disc games coming to the 360 in the near future.

MGS4 was huge a full blu ray or close to it. The game was one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of playing. So I don't wont to see MGS take a step backwards. so I think it should stay exclusive to the PS3.

phosphor1126243d ago

is because it couldn't fit on bluray. They "packaged" up resources and had what they needed (for each chapter) extracted and install so they can use all the resources they wanted. Of course, they still had limitations, because you can only packacke so much, they didn't want to have to install the whole bloody game.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave694d ago (Edited 694d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx694d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga693d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken694d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot694d ago (Edited 694d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken694d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69694d ago (Edited 694d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno694d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69694d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989693d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69692d ago (Edited 692d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989692d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE694d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23693d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE692d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.
