I can't believe how many of you didn't know about this, when I was at BB we got a LOT of these coming in. The yellow light issue is a wide spread issue but not as bad as RROD. If the RROD never existed the Yellow light issue would be getting far more scrutiny, but since the RROD issue is so much bigger it makes the Yellow light issue look smaller than it is. LOL

There are also a couple other issues with PS3s, one of which is unexplainable bricking out of the box, we see a small amount of that as well. The quality of the PS3 is not as great as most people think, its just better than 360, nothing like RROD.

Does anyone know if this has happened with the 20GB PS3 at all?

you cant beat having a replacement PS3 for £5 a month with the option to cancel your plan any time which does mean i only payed £5 for a replacement

I've had my same 60GB PS3 since launch and never have had any problems with my PS3. I had never heard of this "Yellow Light of Death" until last year, but it's nothing I'm worried about, I use my PS3 with confidence every single day.

My first one just crashed on me. It would come on work 4 a while and crash. It was an original 60 gig. Took that back to gamestop and got another. Eventually that got da YLOD & Uncharted was sruck nside. Sent it 2 Sony 4 $150 I think and they even replaced Uncharted 4 free...

Sony wants to do the right thing and repair this for free, but since it has been kept so quiet by the media I dont think Sony wants to stir things up.

It's important for you guys, the consumers to make a stink about this because I think if this issue comes to light in the mainstream, Sony will make it official policy to repair it for free.

Don't try to keep this hush hush due to some silly fear of "xbots" teasing you. We need to get this repaired for free, and that isn't going to happen as long as the perception is out their that PS3 is bullet proof, Sony will not want to ruin that perception for nothing, people need to speak up.

It happened to my original 60GB model. In the middle of a R2 session, paused to go pee, while I was in the bathroom I heard the "beep-beep-beep" and thought WTF? When I got back the PS3 was off with the blinking light. Trying to turn it back on just resulted in the beeps and it turning off again within a second.

I sent it in to the service company ( http://www.micromedicsinc.c... - had an extended warranty with Target). Waited and waited and eventually I bought an 80GB (which, BTW, runs a LOT cooler than the 60GB) and have been very happy.
After a while the service company contacted me and said the couldn't repair it and then Target sent me a $599.99 gift card.

The only problem was nobody would refund me for my R2 disc that was stuck in the PS3, so I had to buy a new copy.
Anybody want an empty R2 case for free?

Happened to me about a month ago (20 gig model). I ended up buying a new playstation... $200 dollars for Sony to fix the old one.

Oh well, I got a 160 gig now. : )

Does the issue exist? Yes. Does it only affect a very very small percentage of ps3 owners? Yes. Is Icewake lying out of his ass that he owns a ps3? Yes.

That site is being swamped, Sony should do like MS did on their official 360 forum, and make a thread with stickies telling people how to handle the YLOD issue, it seems like there are a lot of folks who have no clue what to do when they get this issue. At Bestbuy we get all these idiots bringing there 2year old consoles in for exchange or repair, you actually have to tell people to contact Sony if they don't have a store warranty.

Sony has yet to even acknowledge this officially, please don't wait six years like with the PS2 Sony.

I don't know how people manage to break stuff but I have no electronic device that stop working unless I drop it or without my own fault.

heck I even have 12 yrs old PS1 running like just came out of box.

All other electronics including printer for my computer runs very good.
I guess, it depends on how you handle and some luck.

cant agree more. i went through my second 360 and that was it for me. i have a launch 60gb ps3 and coming up on 3 years ive never had a problem. On the other hand my 360 broke 2 times in a year an a half.

im done with MS until they release the 720. Ill wait to see if theres any problems then MAYBE pick one up. the whole RROD incident left a bad taste in my mouth, like dirty coochie.

don't understand why this is such a big thing electronics are always going to fail. ps2 messed up last gen xbox just stopped working gamecube wont play any games.

my older model tv wont go past 20 channels when used to it would have 100 channels.

not talking about my systems just talking about whats happened to me and friends only ps2 and xbox messed up on me. my point is things mess up its going to happen.

It DOES exist, but as has been said before it is much less common than the RROD. I got a YLOD a few weeks ago on a BC 80GB (The motorstorm bundle).

Of course, I accidentally dumped 32oz of water and a 16oz Rockstar on one of my 40GB PS3s about a year ago and it is still playing flawlessly. My launch 60GB is still playing fine except on Unreal Engine 3 games it has weird sound problems.

All in all, much more robust hardware than the 360.

Ive got the YLOD (after almost 2years of using it, sometimes almost 3days straight). Fortunately it was fixed with the heatgun. Then i got a second YLOD (cause I left it on all night long :P) but we did the same process and now it is working fine, but it is not true that it runs quieter its actually quite the opposite, then fans are louder than before. It's been like 3 months and it is still working (im not pushing it too far though.

Just in case, i've been saving money to buy another one, but i do not want to give up on my ol' trusty PS3 cause of the Backwards comp...

and gave my 40gb to the missus so I hope this doesn't happen to me!

Not to mention nothing cures RROD at this point. All models suffer and frankly they dont know whats causing it. If they did they would have fixes it already.

I had my 60GB fixed/replaced for free and it was a launch console. The video card went out on it, but I ran it HARD! It stayed on almost 24/7 Folding@home. I can't tell you how many thousands of units I folded, and was leader of my group for a looonnnnnngggggg time. But since I got my new 60gb model, i ain't folding jack shyt!

I have contributed my efforts to the process and lost a PS3 soldier in the process. This new PS3 60gb will be treated like a baby. Hell, I even kept the packing plastic on it and cut it away from the vents, but the plastic shell is protected. This PS3 should last me for 2 more console generations.

If someone wants to know how to get your PS3 repaired for free, I will tell you how I did it step for step... easy as cake, even my girlfriend laughed about it.

only had one problem and that was with games were a bit of glitch and the picture was jumping and when someone talk the voice could not hear so i took back to shop and got anothe rps3 60 gig with motorstorm and resistence fall of man and extra sixx axxexx for 3 the with the machine at time and it been working well for the last 25 mnths so im happy

In the UK you can insure your PS3 for i think it's £2 a month unlimited after youre years garuntee has expired.

this thing happen to me 1 time but i fixed by my own i just open my ps3 and remove the power supply and wait about 20 mins. and thats it and now no problems at all working fine

I had both the BR-DVD lens failure, and the ylod. Both times while out of warranty. The only reason I'm not pissed now is that my credit card company picked up the cost of the repairs both times.

It was DUUUSSSTTEEEYYYY! Was getting really loud too.

Cleaned her out and put some new thermal paste on it too for good measure.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
