R2 was a disappointment compared to R:FoM anyway.

patch away.

smokeybeef6272d ago

Resistance 2 blows away Resistance 1. It's just that R1 had a lot more room, it wasn't competing with CoD4, CoD5 (meh), Killzone 2, etc.

The story is superior in R2, as are the bosses. It's just a shame they gutted out the two player split-screen standard campaign.

FunAndGun6272d ago (Edited 6272d ago )

What the hell happened to RESISTANCE? Yes, this is another one of those posts ..
This is not about complaining or giving crap to Insomniac. I am writing this because I fell in love with R:FoM and the sequel has me scratching my head. I have been around since the beginning, over 50,000 total kills and over 1,000 kills with every weapon in R:FoM. This is only intended as feedback and opinion from a fan .I still consider Insomniac one of the best.

This is all feedback on Competitive play:

One of the biggest changes that I don t understand is the lack of identity for the Humans and Chimeras.
R2 is really just normal looking humans Vs ugly looking humans. What happened to the Chimera? Are they really just humans with different skins? What happened to the Rage? What happened to the weakness of heat? What happened to the differences in these two races?

R:FoM

-Human -************************-Chim era-
Resembles a Human***************Resembles a Creature/Monster/Alien
Moves like a Human**************Moves unlike a normal Human
Can run*************************Ha s Rage
Has Radar***********************Ca n See through Walls
Exploit Heat Advantage**********Weakness to Heat

R2

-Human-********************** ***-Chimera-
Resembles a Human***************Resembles a human with a costume on
Moves like a Human**************Moves like a Human
Can Run*************************Ca n Run
Has Radar***********************Ha s Radar
Has Improved Radar-Berserk******Has Rage-Berserk
No heat advantage***************No heat weakness

So basically in R2 the Humans and Chimera are EXACTLY the same except for that ONE berserk difference. And do many people even use those when there is invisibility, LAARK/Pulse, Ironheart, and Ring of Life at their disposal?

I am sure they changed it to make the game fair , but that makes it less fun. One of the best aspects of R:Fom was taking out a Raging Chimera who should have just kicked your ass. In R2 there is no satisfaction in killing a Chimera because they have the same exact abilities as you. In R:FoM there were two rounds, usually you played one as a Human and one as a Chimera. You got to play with the pros and cons of both races that way, and it was totally fair. In R2 there is one round where it really makes no difference if you are human or Chimera. This is boring and lacks the overwhelming feeling of being attacked by a creature who should be stronger than yourself.

Berserks suck, plain and simple. I don t understand how giving an advantage to a veteran player makes this game fun for newcomers. Shouldn t all players have the same abilities at their disposal from the start and let the skill of those abilities determine the better player?
Oh you are new to the game? Here let me blast you with my Pulse Cannon, slap you in the face while I m invisible, and laugh as your bullets tickle me while my ironheart or ring of life is enabled. You will have better luck once you level up enough to have these perks you noob

And really what is the point after all the players level up and have these perks? It just turns into a rock, paper, scissor game of who has what ability and when that ability gets activated.

Another thing that erks me is that you can t see if an opponent has the ring of life or ironheart ability activated until you are close to them. Two opponents can be in a gunfight at midrange distance and you can t tell if they have a berserk activated. Only until it shows the player that killed you do you see the ring or the ironheart bubble. Oh, so that s why I lost

Berserks only give a greater advantage to good players.

Im sorry, but the secondary fire of the Marksman has got to be the LAMEST choice for Competitive play. Releasing scouting shock orbs that take more than a ¼ of your health and require absolutely no skill is quite sad. What s worse is the orb will continue to kill you even if you killed your opponent. Sure you can shoot down the orb, but honestly is anyone really successful at that? I know the Splicer acts the same way with the secondary fire. It can still kill you after you have taken your opponent down, but your opponent actually had to aim and land the blade in the first place; not just hit the secondary fire button and watch the sparks fly.

Omission of the Arc Charger and Dragon. These were two of the coolest and most original weapons in R:Fom. They added diversity to the weapon set and were FUN to use.

The Grenade icon doesn t seem to be accurate, and the Hedgehog is the worst. One spike seems to kill you and the icon, when it shows up, is terribly inaccurate to where I am standing.

There are more LAARKS/Pulse Cannons and 40 s in R2 than in R:FoM. 40 s were one of the biggest complaints in R:FoM and now there are more of them. Also, why is there no stat tracking of the 40mm use???? This was asked for many times on R:FoM, thought for sure it would have made it into this game.

The weapon wheel this has been beat to death, but I miss it and it s a shame the two weapon system is used JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER FPS.

Using the sixaxis to view the map and stats. This feature was GREAT in R:FoM. You could check the stats of all the players and view the entire map just by tilting the controller in each direction. You could continue to run and aim while checking either screen. In R2 I have to use my thumb to hit select to check the stats. Sure this is a simple feature, BUT WHY OMIT THINGS IN A SEQUEL THAT WORKED SO WELL IN THE ORIGINAL?

Why is there no in game messaging system?????? In R:Fom after a game was over there were always good games flying around and communicating with new players. Now if I want to send a message I have to access the XMB, and type the name of the person I want to send a message to. The omission of in game messaging takes R2 a couple steps backwards. Yes, I know, I have a mic, but after the game is over I would still like to easily send a message.

Air Vents the new style is sad. There is very little control and choice about how to maneuver. If an opponent hits the air vent, I know where he is going. let me just prepare myself to kill you because I KNOW where your going to land. Free control air vents add tactical decisions, not predetermined destinations.

A lot of people are always proclaiming that the changes to R2 from R:Fom are progressive. Well, just because a change was made, doesn t mean it was in the right direction. I have no problem with change, but the changes made to R2 have created a game just like all the other FPS. To me, change means different NOT the same. All the original ideas from R:Fom are stripped away and R2 is just a skeleton of its predecessor.

Again, this may come off as complaining, but it is strictly feedback from a fan of the original game. I will still play R2 for a little bit, but I already know it will not infect me like FoM did. I really hope there is a R3, but I hope it takes more from FoM and just a small pinch from R2.

Thank you Insomniac for your outstanding track record, I know you can t please everyone. Just wish more of the originality from FoM was preserved.

Campaign Note:
I would rather have smaller bosses that actually put up a fight (R:Fom), than 300 foot monsters that look VERY cool, but are insultingly easy to beat and very unrewarding with a sense of accomplishment (R2).

spunnups6272d ago

R2 is missing Core Control, which was a really fun multiplayer mode in R1. Other than that I dig it. 5000 more kills for me for platinum in this game.

ottoenie6272d ago

no way i am going to read that!

redsquad6272d ago

I wasn't 'disappointed' with R2, but still prefer R:FOM by a wide margin. Better atmosphere all round for me.

Sharpshell6272d ago

I was dissapointed with R2 compared with R:FOM but as I finished it I came to relize I was glad that Insomoniac made it as different as they did b/c to this day I go back and enjoy playing R:FoM (and I wish more other people were still playing the original sometimes)

@FunandGun:

I agree with (almost) everything you said... and noticed it myself... to name jsut a few of the numerous things you cited which bother me as I also miss the difference between the Chimera nad Humans and the missing Gun Wheel. However consider this counter point:

At the end of the day, alot of these aspects of the original game, which we loved in concept, sometimes resulted in a imperfect balance in multiplayer. Insomniac clearly wanted to make thigns as balanced as possible this time around, removing race differences. Also making the Laark a Rage attack rather than just another weapon, and removing the wheel so you cant weapon horde. the lightning Orb I believe is to provide a counter to thsoe who would use the shotgun and rush. etc etc. Now the original allowed you to play both rounds, as you noted, but at the end of the day (let us all admit) their were so many ways to exploit the game to the point that certain players with certain weapons (the laark) could dominate as either race. Players still acheive this, will somewhat less ferocity imo, but now players are placed somewhat more evenly on each side, and in order for this to work they insituted the rank system and the rank system is only valid as long as ever round of every game is balanced not subject to race pros/cons. At the end of the day I enjoy R2 multipalyer more b/c I feel less subject to the game and more in control of it. It is also more reminisant to other fps (halo esp) but thats for a reason, b/c this time around Inosomniac acheived their goal to make a universally apealing FPS.

However its really hard to equate all this stuff and really stack one game over the other but at the end of the day I'm glad that R2 is diff simply for the sake of being diff. R1 is still a grea tgame and R2 doesn't replace it (the way KZ2 replaces KZ or Halo etc), its adds to the Resistance World. I always disagree with simply extending the same formula in a sequal (Que Diable 3 debate now) b/c its better to have 2 great games than 1.5

FunAndGun6272d ago

yeah, I guess it is because I loved FoM so damn much. I was shocked by how much the sequel changed and how the Chimera and Humans are alike. In ANY Sci-Fi invasion plot, the character invading is ALWAYS stronger than humans and ALWAYS has a weakness. I just never got the feeling that the humans were in peril in R2 because the basic Chimera were really no different than the humans.

I don't know, I guess I'm just bitter because it changed so much. As a stand alone shooter R2 is not bad, but as a sequel it just lost the magic and fun for me.

oh well, can't please everyone.

R:FoM - 1.5 year addiction

Some people have a piss poor view on what makes a good game, mainly because they dont care about a good game, they care about a game that cater's toward their "E-Peen".

The only (-) was the loss of co-op in campaign mode.

Besides that R2 was a far superior product and much more user friendly. It sounds like some SUPER UBER hardcores are upset there R1 skills didn't carry over to R2. I've heard that before:

*cough*COD4 lamers coming to KZ2*cough*

Marceles6272d ago (Edited 6272d ago )

R2 was good, but I liked R1's single player over R2's and R2's multiplayer over R1's, combine both games single player and multiplayer and it would be absolutely perfect. R1's single player seemed more difficult too, and I'm talking about Superhuman on R2 compared to normal difficulty on R1...the chimera in R1 practically had perfect aim and only shot at you though so that might've been an AI thing, but I felt I got more out of R1's single player experience after I beat it. R2 seemed to cater more to people complaining and comparing it to Halo/COD4 in terms of multiplayer too and people complaining about R1 being too hard.

"The last point is the most impressive as it is the second game to support such a feature on the PS3, the first being LittleBigPlanet."

LBP doesnt have this feature, it has profile login feature. yes its different.

EDIT: Im pretty sure we need a new FW update to allow the feature to happen. so im guessing that FW 2.7 is near. im pretty sure MM will update LBP with this new patch. it makes gaming on the PSN even better, with out paying a Fee.

Karum6272d ago

I actually prefer the controls in R2 a lot more than in R1. I even chose the control scheme in KZ2 that was closest to R2.

The patch might interest me in playing the game again.

killcycle6272d ago

second player psn log in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Karum6272d ago

But I'm radign it as you maybe missed the point of 2nd player PSN login.

Basically it means you can have 2 people logged into their PSN account at the same time on the PS3, play Co-Op split screen and both of your online profiles will gain xp on your class and contribute towards any of your own stats for trophies and any other form of progression.

Bebedora6272d ago

The co-op splitscreen. How hard is that to do when ONLY doing the campaign with a friend?

I've tried it with a pal of mine, not by a long extent, but it was freakin impossible for us to get past 300 yards of the first map without failing misserably. We aren't hardcore gamers but still liked R:FoM and hoped to be able to complete R2 as well.

Video Game Franchises in Danger of Being Forgotten

The gaming industry moves at such a pace that it’s not surprising we’ve seen countless franchises fall into obscurity over the years.

Im surprised that a game with a heritage of Medal of Honor is in this list.

cthulhucultist562d ago

There is a rumour that Driver 1 & 2 remasters will be released for Switch and presumably for other systems as well.

https://www.gamingbible.com...

Not sure however whether this results into new games in the near future.

HellspawnPR1981562d ago

Ninja Gaiden? Splinter Cell? Tenchu? Virtua Fighter? Killer Instinct? Killzone?

DefenderOfDoom2562d ago

I would very much enjoy
a new dedicated single player Killzone campaign. With a fun multi-player.

cthulhucultist562d ago

Tenchu and Killer Instict would be great indeed!

Unfortunately new Killzone game does not seem to be in the works

Virtua Fighter is going to receive a new entry!

https://www.dualshockers.co...

Splinter Cell is likely to be one of the remasters launching next year (not sure whether this has to do anything with the remake previously announced)

https://toronto.ubisoft.com...

HellspawnPR1981562d ago

Yeah, read the news about a new Virtua Fighter and I am so ready for it. Splinter Cell at this point I don't believe anything Ubisoft says plus I don't think modern day Ubisoft can make a decent stealth game. They will likely fuck it up.

Inverno562d ago

Basically everything at this point as companies have no concern with preservation.

Ranking the Resistance Games From Worst To Best

While it's been on ice for as long as it was around, the Resistance franchise has no shortage of quality.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon1484d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 1484d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris1485d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy091485d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty1484d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb1485d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey6021484d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop1484d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv721483d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya1484d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.

Why Resistance Was So Incredible

While the studio is best known for Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet, and Clank, and Spider-Man back on the PS3 the studio broke from creating platformers and made one of the highest regarded science-fiction first-person shooters of all time. This was Resistance and it remains one of Sony's most acclaimed and dormant franchises.

Really wish Insomniac would bring back Resistance!

darthv721840d ago

Agreed. Until they do a new entry, I'd love to get the two portable games remade into console versions. Maybe in a nice compilation with the mainline titles.

monkey6021840d ago

Burning Skies wasn't a great game.
It was only a couple of hours long and there was nothing memorable about it.

I'd love a new entry

darthv721839d ago

^monkey, hence why it should be remade into a better version.

SullysCigar1841d ago

Resistance 3's campaign was gorgeous for the time - and an awesome game to boot.

monkey6021840d ago

I remember being put off by it because McHale wasn't the MC but it turned out to be my favourite campaign

CBaoth1840d ago

by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

Army_of_Darkness1839d ago

My favorite resistance game as well! It seriously had creepy, scary a$$ moments bro! It made me want an action horror game from insomniac!

Mr_cheese1840d ago

Remember playing this through online co op with the move controller and gun attachment! What a game!

BlackIceJoe1840d ago

I've said in the past I'd like to see this series return and have it take place years later, like in the present.

I'll give you an example if I'm not mistaken the last game ended in the 50s, so if it was to take place some time in the 2020s you'd have an opportunity to see how the world changed after the fall of Chimera and all the new technology that came out of that war.

Just like in our universe we all know WW2 happened, but we never experienced it, so if the next Resistance game takes place years later so too would people in that universe know a war look place against the Chimera, they just wouldn't know what it really was like.

So getting to see how that universe would respond to the Chimera reemerging would be interesting.

Imagine a little kid talking with his grandfather about the war and the kid just thinks it was just a made up bed time horror story and what was said was worse than what really took place, but now that the Chimera come back the kid will find out why years later the old timer adults were still waiting for the Chimera to return.

I think there is great potential for this series still and I really believe the best way forward for Resistance is make it have a time jump too.

So hopefully this series will return.

Dragonopolis1840d ago

Great Idea. I'd play that version.

Resistance was a great game and of all the remasters.... I would play a great remastered version of resistance series as well

waverider1840d ago

I was blown away when i played for the first time Resistance on the PS3. Great Game. Also liked very much an played for hundred of hours the Co-op of R2. The SP campaign of R3 is also excelent. I really hope that Sony and Insomniac annouced the Remaster of the Series and a new chapter. They got story to do that.

Jambola121840d ago

Resistance 2 was one of the first few games i played on ps3 and I loved it, would definitely finish that again :D

Chevalier1840d ago

I loved all the Resistance games. But part 2 online was amazing. The Marksmen for the Spec Ops type class when it was fully upgraded was such an amazing weapon. Oh man I wish they release all the games again and let us play part 2 online again.
