Microsoft's Multi-Platform Sales Trend Majorly Declining

Following February's NPD sales figures, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony all put together their respective media spin on their performance throughout the month. As part of this, Microsoft proudly declared that they're out-performing Sony on franchises previously associated with the Playstation brand, and to cap it off they declared that they believe Final Fantasy XIII will sell more comprehensively on the Xbox 360 than the Playstation 3.

Talk about spin Sony is losing deal with it.

Sony is losing ground even with major AAA's releasing the only spin I'v heard is from Sony and fanboys lol.

mephman6190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

The article never stated that Sony were winning, just that Microsoft's lead is fast diminishing with regards to multi-platform sales.

TheHater6190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

I am guessing you didn't read the article Power of Green. You should read it and maybe you might hold off on that "spin, spin" comment you just made.

Edit: @Power of Green
Then why is Pro Evo 09 and FIFA 09 selling more on the PS3 than on the xbox 360? Street Fighter and RE aren't playstation old franchises. Those games were never exclusive to any sony consoles.

power of Green 6190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

The only multi platform games that have been releasing lately that have done alright on Son'y platforms are games that are part of age old Playstation franchises now on the 360 lol.

Its like saying the Halo's and Forza's are starting to sell better on the 360 PS3 is doomed lol These are the only game that have been releasing(GTA4/DMC4/VF5/ etc).

The games I mention are of course game identified with one brand or the other and game companies have depended on for success, the 1st party status is irrelevant to my point.

All the PC types like COD and Fallout or new IP's do better on the 360 just the same as earlier this gen so that point is moot incase you try to bring it up.

Have a nice day.

Quite interesting to see how sales are starting to even out.

Blaze9296190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

good for...sony? Dont really see why anyone should care. Just silly rivalry between companies and numbers, does us consumers no justice.

eagle216190d ago

PS3 is strong and haters are weak. :)

Saigon6190d ago

I never thought about that...it makes sense to why there is so much bashing from MS...and dont forget to include the fan base...they are relentless...

myothercar6190d ago

MS should be ashamed. Here's a strong quote from the article:

"While looking at multi-platform titles on a whole is important, looking at franchises paints a far better picture; one that's very distant from the picture being painted by Microsoft. Aaron Greenberg claimed that Playstation 2 users are moving to the Xbox 360 instead of the Playstation 3, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Microsoft claimed that Madden is a brand associated with Playstation and when looking at its figures it does show something interesting. Madden 09 sold approximately 500k more units than Madden 08, and the Playstation 3 version of Madden 09 sold approximately 630k more units than Madden 08, while the Xbox 360 figures stayed roughly the same (150k less). So that means that all of the new consumers went to the Playstation 3, not the Xbox 360."

Cryos6190d ago

This was a very impressive article. Well thought out and researched.

gamesR4fun6190d ago

even with ms's lead the ps3 is catching up doubt if any regulars here didnt know it already.

But who cares what box sells a bit more what really what worries me is that square will let us down on this game.

MNicholas6190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

As the proportion of 360s to PS3s decline with time it is not surprising that the delta in software sales percentage is decreasing but this line from the article caught my attention:

"Madden 09 sold approximately 500k more units than Madden 08, and the Playstation 3 version of Madden 09 sold approximately 630k more units than Madden 08, while the Xbox 360 figures stayed roughly the same (150k less). So that means that all of the new consumers went to the Playstation 3, not the Xbox 360."

I would have liked to see some sources for these numbers. If these numbers are correct it spells big trouble for Microsoft given the primary target demographic for the 360.

It seems that Microsoft continues to struggle outside of the FPS genre.

EXCLUSIVEGAMER6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

lol where are the 360 fanbase in this article?

NOWHERE TO BE FOUND? lol i wonder why.

all week they spin, spin, spin the truth. Then when an article like this comes out that backsup its points with FACTS, they go hide in their holes.

We all know who is gonna win this gen. Its pointless and childish to argue it. just buy the freaking console and enjoy the future exclusives WHICH WILL push the limits of other consoles, while surpassing previous set barriers of THIS GEN.

whoelse6189d ago

A very good article. One of the reasons Call of Duty seems to show minimal change is probably the amount of FPSs for the PS3 recently. I mean there's the release of Bioshock, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, all on top of World at War. 360 owners best choice for a FPS was simply COD.

DaTruth6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

The worst part is... I have a PS3 and don't contribute to any multiplatform game sales. Too many exclusives for me to buy multi games and the quality of PS3 exclusives are better.
Given that lots of PS3 owners aren't buying multiconsole games as much because we actually have a better option, what does this say about the attach rates and hardware numbers.

Clearly, MS has lots of replacement consoles on the market and is it any surprise that 360 numbers went up after the first 360 warranties expired? MS disguised mass replacements with a pricecut.

6189d ago
no-spin6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

nice post

360 replacement must be the reason the multi plat sales dont match the "install base" advantage of MS

Exclusives: yesterday i was looking through my PS3 library and realized that most games had the Sony logo (exclusives) and it was not intentional, is just that the exclusive are so much better than most multi the decision is easy

Halo crazeee6189d ago

i think we should all just be happy to be able to experience this potential AAA title and stop worrying about which console it will sell more because in the end its not going to matter

The Lazy One6189d ago

How sales differences compare than a percent sales difference. Just for my own curiosities sake. Some weird things happen with percents that make them alone hard to take in context. It doesn't really take into account total games sold yearly have been increasing.

For example. if the ratio in 2007 were 5:1 for a game with 360 selling 500 and PS3 selling 100, then in 2008 the ratio was 3:1, but 360 sold 6 million and PS3 2 million, it doesn't show that the actual difference is bigger even though the ratio is smaller.

Also, they need to label their graphs better. In the last two it doesn't say what the scales are.

Jake11116189d ago

Are people saying that the numbers competition is bad! This is AWESOME for the consumers. WHY? Because it promotes competition which in turn presents games like GOW2, KZ2, RE5 etc to us...

Without the competition game we would still be playing bland games. 25 million dollar budgets wouldnt exist in gaming if it wasnt for competition.

So LET THEM FIGHT!! :)

skimming6189d ago

Maybe we can all drive MS to extinction like we did with GM/Chrysler/Ford.

Then we can all relish our servitude under our foreign overlords

We love you Sony!!!! I wil sell my firstborn for you Sony!!!

Aquanox6189d ago (Edited 6189d ago )

Let me guess... they're talking about RE5 and SFIV.

For those who don't remember, something similar happened to DMC4 and this is just because it was a former playstation game. While RE4 appeared first on Gamecube, the console was almost non existent among hardcores back then. It didn't break the ground until it was released on PS3. Still the Xbox 360 managed to sell more worldwide.

As for SFIV, the reason is simple: The Xbox 360 D-pad sucks for fighters. I'm surprised it didn't sell more on PS3. The same happens for Pro Evo which keeps selling more on PS3.

Now of course, this is IF you give the same weight to a game that sold 100k like Moto GP than a game that sold millions like COD WAW.

For brands that aren't related to a console, the differences are still abysmal. Take COD World at War for example, it's selling at double the pace on Xbox 360 than on PS3.

edgeofblade6188d ago

People need to open up their minds every once in a while and try to understand why they hate (insert company X here). I honestly don't think people want to because they might find their beliefs are based on a load of bullshit, and they can't handle that.

And consequently, why do they find (insert company Y here) to be above reproach... the holy Pope of gaming, if you will.

njr6190d ago

The pic here just does it for me lol

swiftshot936190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

To be more clear, its not that 360 titles are selling less, PS3 titles are just selling more. Something we all expected.

360 freaking dominates Call of Duty though...

Edit: This is indeed very interesting. 8 million lead? I thought there would be a much bigger difference then what the graph is showing. Now I want to see Wii, DS, and PSP incorporated in this graph.

TheHater6190d ago (Edited 6190d ago )

I don't think the Wii, DS and PSP would show anything major. The Xbox 360 would still be leading in terms of software sales for the majority of games that is in the charts for this article.

cranium6189d ago

The graph isn't big enough to put the wii in there. It needs to go to at least 1000% so the wii can fit :)

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972801d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus801d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim800d ago (Edited 800d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda800d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B799d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125800d ago (Edited 800d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic799d ago (Edited 799d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic799d ago (Edited 799d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981799d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot799d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda799d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay799d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12801d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay799d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183801d ago (Edited 801d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB800d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
