Everybody's talking about supercomputing on the desktop – and in particular, whether it will be GPUs that achieve that goal.

a CPU and GPU system rather than a GPGPU system.. simply because a GPU is for graphics processing not central processing! now if u could get me a CPU AND a GPGPU system.. i'm sold :)

DeadlyFire6314d ago

This won't end graphics cards you know. Most likely it will be GPGPU + GPU. So you will be getting vast improvements of performance. Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA are all ready for GPGPU systems. NVIDIA being the smaller company, but they are still eager to be setup for it.

For gaming this will be gold at attracting new people to PC platform. No more I have to buy a GPU to play. You can start off with not having to buy one. Then buy one later to add years to your PCs lifespan or buy a couple at the beginning and have all of them working with the GPGPU as well. PCIExpress 3 is coming in 2010. So GPUs will get a hefty speed boast.

u can do it now and get a really good gpu like 4800 anda mediocre cpu it will run really well.

You mean, I wont need a Graphics card anymore?

wibble6314d ago

Exactly! :)

The GPU is slowly turning into a CPU.

Polygons and rasterization aren't enough. Perhaps when we finalize new procedures for generating realistic images in realtime then specialized hardware (graphics cards) will become useful again.

DeadlyFire6313d ago

Probably not as much as usual, but older systems will still require one. You can use the GPGPU for so long then maybe it will need a boast to play newer games. So you might have to buy a new card down the line, but probably not with first purchase of the PC though. Great price savings for you to buy a PC. No more expensive graphics cards in PCs to buy. It will already be in the CPU. So prices will go down for desktops on shelves.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing66d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9266d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit66d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing66d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9266d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
