Blizzard's highly-anticipated RTS sequel, StarCraft II, may not ship with multiplayer LAN functionality - one of the features that made its predecessor so popular.

I don't think this is a "deal-breaker" for many fans, but on the other hand, I think many fans will be sorely disappointed if they no longer can hook up with their friends to play the latest version of StarCraft...

y0haN6272d ago

This is just so they can charge for Battle.net for people in the same room to play.. not even Xbox Live needs that. :/

Proxy6272d ago (Edited 6272d ago )

So lets say some friend decide to play together in one house.

How is Battle.net going to sort out 6 different computers, 6 different accounts, and 6 different games, when YOU ONLY HAVE ONE IP ADDRESS?

They will probably say "Sorry, only one player per IP address." Literally killing all localized play.

Have a friend or a bother you wan to play with? Buy a 2nd internet connection.

In the end, SC2 will never approach the glory of SC1.

y0haN6272d ago (Edited 6272d ago )

Well Proxy, no doubt it'll be cracked if they do this or worse, charge money for Battle.net. That way people will have LAN player over a fake cloud, and internet play over a fake cloud over a fake LAN, like with Hamachi :).

Dorjan6272d ago

I think it almost is... no LAN? Well I know most have the internet but still why!? :(

Leord6272d ago

Well possible reasons for not including LAN would be:

- Stop piracy
- Get more money from the ads on Battle.net

There really are no other plausible reasons. I think that the player enjoyment of having LAN play would weigh up for the minimal money "loss" from having LAN, and the possible piracy. I mean the new Battle.net will be awesome, so people will only play LAN when they have no internet.

Cogo6272d ago

Well, the Diablo 3 LAN removal was based around giving people cohesion of the gameplay. since the characters are stored online, it is confusing to have multiple versions of multiplayer. I guess you could say the same about SC2, you'll have your win/loss lists online, and all your favourite maps, possibly, and god knows what else.

Perhaps LAN is truly obsolete?

Proxy6272d ago (Edited 6272d ago )

Doing ANYTHING without express consent of the developer is obsolete.

Paying Customer: "May I please play online."
Mighty Developer: "You may, be sure to click a few advertisements while your at it."

Paying Customer: "May I install this game on a new computer."
Mighty Developer: "Yes, please buy an additional installation licence for an additional 9.99. We will then be happy to allow you to install your game."

Paying Customer: "Can I play this game on my computer that doesn't have internet."
Mighty Developer: "Only if you have the pirat - I mean - Unfortunately no, because then we won't have the total control that we desperately need."

Paying Customer: "Me and a friend have 2 computers sitting 5 feet apart, can we play together."
Mighty Developer: "Sure, please connect to battle net, send your information through battle net, and be patient with the lag you receive from battle net."

Malfurion6272d ago

I can almost hear the nerd screams...

kalos6272d ago

Yep.

A great deal of people are going to be very, very loud about this in all probability.

player_729856272d ago

I've never really cared for LAN all that much - never played a LAN game either, so I won't be missing anything at all.

Cogo6272d ago

Same here. I was never part of that generation. I agree that events like DreamHack are cool, but it's more of an event than the social thing, right?

Terrice6271d ago

Well, I grew up with LAN - not just SC, but Diablo and Diablo II as well - so this is kind of hard to take at the moment.

It's not going to stop me from buying SC2 though.

sh8kes6272d ago

No lan.. no lan, what is this.. my fav part of any game :(

Leord6272d ago

It's the one reason I still play Heroes of Might & Magic 3, and even bought a multi-box with game + expansions a few months back. sure, that game doesn't even have anything like Battle.net, but I'm mostly interested in playing in the same room as my mates anyway.

I mean, LAN play is what makes a game survive longer than the release week. Well, not really that harsh, but makes them continue their legacy for ever and ever....

'StarCraft: Remastered', 'StarCraft II' Now Available on PC Game Pass

This week, Blizzard Entertainment dropped both 'StarCraft: Remastered' and 'StarCraft II Campaign Collection' into PC Game Pass.

meganick556d ago

Hopefully these get released on Switch and Playstation, along with Age of Empires. There’s a severe lack of good RTS games on both those platforms.

waytoobad555d ago

if only they didn't raise the price 500% last year.

Let the COD on GamePass experiment begin!
I would think their quarterly revenue will take a hit compared to a year ago, but will maybe make up for it throughout the year as the monthly GP subs keep coming in

pwnmaster3000580d ago

Was up with call of duty man?
I downloaded cod on gamepass and for some reason I cannot access the game.

darthv72580d ago

just curious what version? There are some that you can pre-load, but they wont work until their release date later this month.

pwnmaster3000580d ago

I have to redownload it again for the 3rd time to check.
I ended up just deleting it to make room for other games after the second time.

It was on Xbox game pass, I didn’t know there was other versions. I just downloaded everything, but sadly I couldn’t even access the game. Maybe 3rd time the charm. I’ll download it again.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH580d ago

It’s not out yet man unless you’re talking about MW3.

pwnmaster3000580d ago

I’m talking about mw3. For some reason I could not get it to work.

just_looken580d ago

On xbox there is the last gen/current gen versions pc though you could also get a xbox version.

When that new forza first came out for one day they had the xbox version on the pc store i was like ? what it was odd.

On xbox you can easily download the one version of a game instead of the series version so you run into issues on your series console.

pwnmaster3000580d ago

Because a game won’t run after I download it??
Man your kids must hate your @ss if that’s how you think.

It's going to be very interesting to follow up on how the new entry of CoD will perform at the box office, player numbers and distribution of Xbox, PC and PS versions this year.

DivineHand125580d ago

I got excited thinking they ported StarCraft to consoles but it's just the PC version. Also, I thought Starcraft 2 was already free to play.

TheColbertinator580d ago

I'm certain it is going to be the Campaign Collection version.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27915d ago (Edited 915d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris915d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster915d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris915d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT916d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster915d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Extermin8or3_915d ago

This right here is the fucking problem.
