Blu-ray prices drop at retail

Blu-ray Disc new release pricing is on the slide at retail, hovering at an average of $26 so far in 2009, according to Adams Media Research, as retailers try to find the right carrot to dangle for the thriftiest consumers in years.

God... I love BluRay. I've actually RE-purchased a few films that warrant it (Matrix Trilogy, Pirates Trilogy... bring on LotR EE and Watchmen DC!)

All they really need to do is drive those prices down and keep the transfer quality high. Next up... the Terminator 2 Directors Cut (what can I say, I love the extra scenes a ton).

bring LOTR to Blu-ray , and 10 seasons of Stargate SG1.

Things'll start booming as soon as Star Wars the original trilogy comes out on Blu-Ray. Bound to happen.

KruLLit6283d ago

Lucas released the Star Wars trilogy in DVD not too long ago, so I don't think the BR releases will come in the next 2 years.

I have a huge BR collection and I rarely spend over $20 for a movie. Amazon constantly has deals like buy one/get one or 50% off.... They are also cheaper at Costco... and I was in Walmart last week and saw a bunch of older titles on sale for $10.... what I have noticed is that the prices of new release DVD titles is going up.... DVDs like Dark Knight, Iron Man, the new Indiana Jones, etc. were retailing for about $23... only $5 less than full price on their BR counterparts (which, by the way, no one in the media is reporting on)... Even Blockbuster is now selling pre-rented BRs for $16! And anyone that remembers the early days of DVDs knows how expensive they were ($50 or more for some titles!!)... any talk of the high price of BR discs is complete and utter BS if you simply look around.

BJs pretty much the same as costco, just not as well known i dont think, no costco around here but i mean the day The Dark Knight came out i got it for $21 at BJs on blu ray! couldnt believe that deal thats like $5 cheaper then dvds at rip off best buy and any other store like it.

I cant agree with you more, but its smart on their part, if they release the hobbit(which I thought would be in the works by now) then they will release the Blu ray of those, it is smart because while they market the hobbit they will have an excuse to market the bluray in the commercial.

about star wars, why this hasnt gone to bluray i have no idea its really rediculus

Unicron6283d ago

Star Wars? Because MORE changes are being made, I'm not joking. They have footage on one of the DVDs... Sith I think, of Yoda puppet in Ep 1 being replaced with the Ep 3 CG Yoda.

You can buy older classic movies on Bluray for around the same price as an older movie on DVD. and that's cool. anything else I just get off of Ebay with much better prices than retail.

^_^ Screw FYE. Target you're cool though

nnotdead6284d ago

ive seen a bunch of older movies on blu ray for $10 at walmart. i picked up Reservoir Dogs for that price.

dcbronco6283d ago

Blu-Ray has come close to that new yet. $10 is still more than twice the price. And listen to what one of the retailers said. The studios were expecting larger margins on Blu-ray. (Translation) They were looking to rape the public and pad their pockets to cover the losses on all the crap they green light every year.

Theoneneo816284d ago

yeah Amazon has a great blu ray sale right now the 2 disc set that doesnt include the digital copie is at 16 Both Narnia Movies are around 25 i think. anyway next movies i want to hear announced on blu ray

Toystory 1/2
Finding Nemo
Lord of the Rings
incredibles

Lord of the Rings on Bluray?

That would be sooooooo nice

Panthers6283d ago

Its supposed to be coming this year. No word on Star Wars though. That wont be out for a long time I think.

I really want Bad Boys 2. Amazing movie.

LoydX-mas6284d ago

prices drop when people are not buying.

Dave20016283d ago

I guess that explains the price drop for the xbox 360 then!:p

LoydX-mas6283d ago

Actually, that is true.
Since MS dropped the price, 360 sales have been breaking their own records.

But, there is a major difference when the retailer HAS to drop the price to entice purchasing and the manufacturer telling the retailers this is what the new MSRP is.

When MSRP drops, the retailer usually sees the same drop in their price but with this Blu-ray price drop, I highly doubt the studio is dropping their price.

in 2008 over 36 million blu-ray titles were sold up 300% increase from 07. world wide sales on pace for 100 million in 09.

www.blu-ray.com/news

according to this sales have been steadily increasing. but nice try.

Mikerra176283d ago

they lowered the price because as the years go own technology and these disks dont cost as much, do you remember when dvd came out
