Caustic Graphics Makes Ray-Tracing Realistic for Gaming

San Francisco-based Caustic Graphics has developed a new patent pending technology that can actually bring ray-tracing that generates highly realistic accurate three-dimensional images to computer gaming. Ray-tracing is currently really only used in high budget Hollywood productions and is a rather tedious process where a short scene can take months to generate with ray-tracing.

Caustic says it has developed software and a physical chip that has the capacity to generate ray-tracing images 200 times faster than even the highest end video chip currently available. Users would have to actually use the Caustic chip on top of their existing video card. Caustic is aiming to release its CausticOne chips by mid 2010. There is no information relating to pricing, or possible partners for usage or distribution.

however, with Sony in talks with Mental Images about making a cell version of mental ray, and the samples of real time ray tracing using 3 ps3's over a gigabit network, I'm far more interested in seeing what becomes of that. I suspect the next wave of consoles (PS4/XBOX720) will incorporate real time ray tracing in them in some form or another.

Who knows, maybe mental images will be able to optimize the cell based mental ray routines enough so that they could even effect the PS3 to some extent.

How are they patenting this tech now? Bored programmers was ray-tracing with the PS3 back in 2005. A separate programmer even used the Cell Processor alone to ray-trace an entire city scape, just using mathematical equations.

If Caustic Graphics can make this happen then I can use the number cruncher the CPU to make polygons and physics at the same time; thus allowing the GPU to do nothing but texture and filtering. This is going to be very interesting!

xplosneer6318d ago

I believe those weren't real time, they had been generated beforehand ON THE PS3, but it wasn't fast enough to be integrated into games(ie loading time of months!) This is talking about a chip optimized for that in order to be able to play games with the tech in real time.

Kakkoii6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

RayTracing doesn't effect the GPU's performance on calculating triangles, textures, filtering. Because these are done on specifically made cores in the GPU. GPU's have recently added what they call "Stream Processors" or "Shader Cores" which are more general purpose cores on the GPU, which are used for things like shading, physics and more general purpose computing. This is what Nvidia's CUDA/PhysX calculates with.

@Electricear:
Real time Ray Tracing won't be a reality on the Next Generation consoles either. As they are coming in the next 1-2 years, while RayTracing hardware/software is still in it's infancy, performance wise.

When it's done effectively on the PC. Then you will see it finally come to the Consoles. That's the sign you'll have to watch for.

steve30x6318d ago

For them to ray trace for PS3 games they first need to do it on a PC so they would need this. Imagine what Gran Turismo would look like if it was ray traced. What is aliasig like with ray tracing anyway? Does it need any form of anti aliasing or is it free from jaggies?

Electricear6318d ago

I think you miss read my statement. I said that the next generation of consoles will incorporate real time ray tracing in some form or another. Ray tracing simply (understatement) casts a ray at a pixel or sub pixel level into the scene and traces it's path back to the light source(s). At it's most basic level ray tracing can be done in real time with current hardware technologies, and I even pointed out in a lower post that I had witnessed a real time ray tracer at a siggraph around 5 years ago.

The key elements in the speed of ray tracing are how complex the interactions between the ray and the objects in the scene are, and how many rays you are tracing aka the resolution. The more objects in a scene the more things each ray will have the potential to interact with. When dealing with reflections one has to decide on a loop cut off point to prevent infinite reflection loops, the fewer redundant reflections the faster the calculation. That being said we could ignore ray traced reflections all together and just go with ray traced shadows with no penumbra, and that would significantly increase the speed of the rendering. Ray tracing isn't an all or nothing process, it's a process that can be scaled to match the hardware that is handling the rendering.

As techniques and technology improve the level of ray tracing can be scaled to match. I do not believe that this or the next generation of hardware will be able to match all the effects that can be achieved with non real time render engines; however, ray tracing definitely can be implemented in current hardware to some degree or Mental Images wouldn't be trying to use the Cell and RSX chips to do just that.

I thought that Sony said the PS3 could eventually do ray tracing...and that was one way they future proofed it. If not this is sad as this was something I was looking forward to on my PS3!!!

Foxgod6318d ago

You should really take certain things with a grain of salt, with some logic thinking you would have known that ray tracing cannot be done on current consoles.
It takes months to render a short scene on a cluster of powerful pc's.

Guitardr856318d ago

albeit not in large complex packets, but it has been done! There are so many resources and sites to show this that I didn't bother posting a link...as much as I hate the term...google it!!!!!

GT5 Prologue uses RT in the garage sections.

El_Colombiano6318d ago

Grand Turismo 5 uses ray tracing in the garage. In real time.

pixelsword6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

He is right because it takes a cluster of PC's to render a Ray-traced scene.

He is wrong in that it has to be short, because if the power is there it needs to be as long as the scene is self-contained, and he's wrong about the PS3 not being able to ray-trace; as it only took three to render a scene from Linux; because the Cell Processor is a math monster; and if you get the math algorithms perfected, it can be done on one PS3

Electricear6318d ago

The key is how much ray tracing is actually being done. I saw a tech demo of a Ray tracing graphics card back around 2002-2003 at a Siggraph booth. At the time they were rendering a teapot with full shadows and reflections at roughly 640x480. I can't remember if there was any Anti-Aliasing, and they were getting roughly some where in the neighborhood of 15-20Fps. The problem is that a ray being cast per pixel or sub pixel gets significantly more complex with every object, refraction and reflection it has to deal with, and that's not even getting into things like ambient occlusion, sub surface scattering, global illumination/ radiosity and other time consuming effects.

Fortunately for game purposes many of those effects can be baked or faked well enough to function in real time; however, as(or if) mental images manages to get all the functions of mental ray working in real time there will be subtle changes in the quality of the images we see. Most people will not know exactly what changed, only that for some reason things like the glass looks more realistic, or the milk seems more creamy. Eventually we'll see creatures like Gollum start to appear and that will be a very cool day for game visuals.

That would be amazing to see this technology come to consoles, it will probably take some time to get it to the level Hollywood currently has it at though, still exciting.

JewyMcJew6318d ago

No price.
No real-time performance info.

Not exactly the most action-packed pr announcement :)

ChickeyCantor6318d ago

Thats seriously sick.
If they can boost this up there would be no reason for pixar to "render the scene" XD cinema's could just use these things.

Okai i'm just stretching it...still cool though

Jeebus6318d ago

That actually sounds really cool...

The Lazy One6318d ago

If they get to the point where they can render pixar like scenes in real time, pixar will just up the quality of their movies more. Adding more interactive fur, more objects on scene, more effects, etc.

it's a cool concept, but it would hold back the quality of their work and have no real benefit to the playback of the scenes.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio62d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing62d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9262d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit62d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing62d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9262d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
