Alienware: PCs are better than consoles

VG writes:"With "next-gen" consoles looking more like PCs with every passing day, and an apparent doom and gloom surrounding the state of hardcore PC gaming, at least in the west, you'd think that Alienware, makers of high end gaming PCs, would be up hardware creek without a paddle. Not so, says associate director of product marketing Bryan A. de Zayas. Instead, he explains in this interview with VideoGamer.com, the PC will always provide a better gaming experience than consoles ever will. Not convinced? Read on."

I don't think anyone doubts that the highest end PC will outperform any console. It's just a question of whether you have the additional time and money to maintain such a system.

RudeSole Devil6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

Anyone who owns games like Killzone 2 or Gears of War 2 are playing %100 the exact same game I'm playing. Actually a $3000 PC with all that expensive SLI configurations should be producing games that look years ahead of what any console game looks like but they don't why? Because the gaming industries expends with the consoles not viscera. Games like Killzone 2 and Gears of War actually look and play better than any PC game on the market. And please before you bring up Crysis looking better than any console game you wrong, because to produce those high quility visuals(I'm sure someone will have link their photo bucket account) are impossible for the average gamers budget. BTW Cryteks sales failure with Crysis (This game used over 100 years of man hours to create) will now use there Crytek 3 engine on consoles to start making money.

Chubear6289d ago

that can run Geow, Uncharted, KZ2 etc then I'll pay your attempts to curb the fears of the PC fanbase more attention.

Hell, graphic cards can cost double what a whole console costs. Just imagine this. There will come a time when a gamer can buy a $299 PS3 and be able to play KZ2, KZ3 and KZ4 if they all come out in 5yrs. Ain't no way that's happening on a PC.

... and all for what? a bump in graphics in what is already eye popping stuff on consoles? Hell, there are tonnes of PC gamers that have rigs that can't run Geow the way it's run on the 360 for crying out loud.

Of all the people that complained about the PS3 being too expensive at a $499/599 price point, PC gamers are the very last who should complain and the most hypocritical.

evrfighter6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

where the heck have you been hd4870 and gtx260's both are gpu's that can max crysis without much effort are about to hit $149 and $169 respectively.

sure must have been a nice rock to have stayed under it for that long...

I built my pc for $650 and guess what. I can play crysis on high. You can cry about how its still not as cheap as a console. But guess what I'm using to type this up, download movies, games, music, burn dvd's, cd's...etc. etc. etc. etc...ya

Tissue?

joydestroy6289d ago

yeah, money being the biggest factor.

meatnormous6289d ago

Gears on the pc isn't that hard of a game to run. I know cause I have it.

Viper76289d ago

So basicly the only real difference is just the graphics that come with ability to update the hardware of the pc to get even better graphics and reduce loading times. Everything else is pretty much unrelated to gaming.

Ofcourse I can use PC to store it full of media like music, and I can use it to do all the daily work. But I can do these pretty well with 8 year old PC running on Linux :| capacity isnt really an issue as external HDD:ssä offer quite an improment for pretty cost effective price.

So why is PC better for gaming? Mouse and keyboard? - those can be plugged to any system with usb port. storing games to HDD? Ps3 and X360 already have that option for some of their games..

Consoles where designed for gaming in mind, even if they have these all neat extra media features that are ofcourse welcome. But imo this is a fact that pretty much makes them as more userfriendly and more enjoyable platform for gamers. Less time and money used for tweaking is always more for actual games and playing.

All-36289d ago

YOU ASK --> so how do you explain Killzone 2? no PC can run Killzone 2 and if and when it is released for PC it will be completely watered down!

IF <-- Killzone 2 was ever released for the PC... which it won't be - BUT IF IF IF --> it ever was... it would look FAR BETTER than the PS3 version.

There's FAR MORE processing power available to PCs... not to mention WAAAAAAAAAAAY more system RAM.

The Cell chip and GPU inside the PS3 can't match the latest CPUs or GPUs available for PCs --> C'mon... THINK!

Whenever the NEXT PlayStation arrives... WHERE do you think its'processing power will come from? A Magic rabbit? Technology ADVANCES... the PS3 is a STATIC system - hardware-wise... PCs are not! --> C'mon... THINK!

AND - If you think Killzone 2 is all-of-that... take a good look-see at the upcoming multiplatform game --> Rage - by id Software.

http://www.gametrailers.com...

Heck... look at the soon-to-be-released game --> RE5

pwnsause6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

you're right on the money. Bubbles up.

Ju6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

Gears runs fine on the PC. Now I even can run Crysis properly. Still, the money I spent is more then twice a PS3 costs.

And people complain about 5G installs on the PS3 which take 5-10 minutes. Heck, GeoW took half an hour to install on the PC.

And then there is the Live or Steam thing. What's it gonna be ? Or Gamespy. And each game install a different sh!t and runs that crap on start up.

PC gaming makes sense for some stuff, but if I can get it for a console, I will always prefer that. No hazel, no mess.

BTW: If you want to do Docs, surfing and mailing and what not, try the latest YDL6.1 for the PS3. Just installed it (again) last night (on my 320GB 7200rpm drive). I have yet to enable the vbuffer_swap, but that thing is actually fast. I don't know how they optimized that to use less mem or what, but I think it became much faster now. Running full Gnome.

DeadlyFire6289d ago

No gamer needs high high end system to play games. You can easily set up a rig that can do anything the consoles can do for cheap now. You can get a $30-50 that can do everything the consoles can do. You can get a $100-200 card that can do even more. You should shop smart for PC parts not oh look its new and shiny and has 3% more performance for 800 more dollars!

New Case - $50
Power Supply - $60 - 550 W
Motherboard - $129($100-300) - MSI P7N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU - $200($150-300) - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM - $38($35-95) - Kingston 4GB DDR 2 800 Mhz
Video Card - $130($100-200) - GeForce 9800 GT 512MB
HDD/SSD - $89 - 500 GB

Total = $697 + cheap monitor and keyboard + mouse. It can be cheaper as well. This is good mid-range setup though. You can easily play something on that system even Crysis at playable rates.

PC market is getting cheaper and smaller parts as well. Eventually it will have a cheap market as well. The new Mini-PC market is being born as we speak. Mostly just small pcs for general PC use. Eventually someone will try and push gaming cards and things in there and they will get cheaper as well.

edgeofblade6289d ago

Wow, a company that thinks they are in the right business. Would be a lousy company if they didn't...

It's funny that the PC crowd is ranting and raving that PC is better, while console companies just sit back and let the experiences speak for themselves. This is one of those times when you consider what "better" and "best" are.

And you suddenly realize, there is no such thing. There is only what makes money... and what doesn't.

mabreu6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

Consoles have technical specifications FIXED which delivers a standard gaming experience that defines a single generation of gamers.

PC have a VARIABLE spec which delivers a evolving gaming experience that has no demographic.

Both deliver a unique gaming experience. THE END.

Parappa The Rappa6289d ago

Dude, youre spot on. Technology expands upon itself exponentially, every 6 months.
This means everything gets cheaper, naturally. this is why we see prices drop(even with consoles too).
You can build a PC that will run great games, on hi-res for 400$---less if you reuse some of your old parts(casing, powersupply, etc.).

PC's are always upgradable to, which means you'll always stay ahead of the game.
And there are so many different ways to get your games(legal or not lol).
What I really like, is how you can configure the game and your pc, to optimize the way it plays--cater the games to your needs. and might I add, MODS for the game provide UNLIMITED gameplay.
PCs are awesome. BUT they arent for everyone, so naturally consoles will be around for a while. But i think its only a matter of time before everything is moved to a PC-type format. Fanboys fight about what their consoles can and cannot do--but you never hear this argument with pc people.

@All-3: I wont even begin to tell you how stupid your statements are. Seriously. (and yet i just did lol).

RudeSole Devil6289d ago

First off the first statement you quoted me was indented to be sarcastic! Now Mr. Smarty pants I’ll answer your questions.

You said “The Cell chip and GPU inside the PS3 can't match the latest CPUs or GPUs available for PCs --> C'mon... THINK!”

Well when developing on a dedicated piece of hardware there are unique optimizations that can only be utilized with that hardware. So having the latest quad core and SLI graphics configurations on you PC with WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more ram has little or no effect on a game like Killzone 2. Also Killzone 2 uses a new rendering technique called Deferred Rendering and the only game that uses this is Killzone 2 which will eventually make into a PC game. That’s way the console industries dictates the future of PC gaming.

You said “Whenever the NEXT PlayStation arrives... WHERE do you think its’ processing power will come from? A Magic rabbit? Technology ADVANCES... the PS3 is a STATIC system - hardware-wise... PCs are not! --> C'mon... THINK!”

The cell chip was developed first and only for the PS3 and just recently in 2008, IBM announced a revised variant of the Cell called the PowerXCell 8i, which is available in a server not a PC. So the PS3 is not like traditionally PC cpu processing so the cell processing power is new an unique making your statement NULL.

Killzone 2 is a technical marvel rivaling the best the PC has to offer using the PS3 STATIC system. The Rage engine looks good but when it’s officially out then you can compare so until then Killzone 2 is the industries best and you’ll have to deal with a $400 machine out performing a $2000 general purpose PC.

bviperz6289d ago

Negative ghost rider, no sub $1000 PC can run Crysis at 'playable rates'. Unless you're playing at 1024x768 rez, DX9 low settings. At which point, why in the world did you buy Crysis...

Ju6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

@DeadlyFire, well, yes. You forgot the DVD drive which fares at around $20 (if you go with the cheap). If you do BD and WiFi, add another $200. And then you got a machine which costs twice as much as a console and still can just match up. Crysis runs fine on that, but you'd need to get something below a 9500GT to drop the price to at least $500, and that won't even play that game (yeah, it would, 800x600 no AA and low settings).

@abive: Nah, you can run Crysis on sub $1000: Costco: P-2 X4 2.8G, 4GB, 750GB (special) $599. 9600GT $99. (or 9800 just above). That plays Crysis pretty nicely. (Got 26" 1920x1200 for $249 :)

evrfighter6289d ago

Oh sorry I must have been dreaming when I played and finished crysis on high on my $650 pc @ 1280x1024

Nihilism6289d ago

you are an idiot, even a (now old) 512mb 8800gt has more graphics power than the ps3...the graphics of the ps3 are the best of any console yes, but ps3 ain't sh!t, don't compare a 3 year old console to current pc hardware you dumbass

BattleAxe6289d ago

PC gaming is for nerds who think that they have something to prove. Its a big waste of money. Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Uncharted show exactly why PCs are not needed.

Spydiggity6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

@rude sole devil and many others... get a clue.

this generation of consoles produces games that don't look as good as my last PC which i built in 2003 (and it wasn't the highest end for the time).

and people need to stop saying killzone 2 is the second best looking game behind crysis. this is absolutely untrue. crysis, farcry 2 (pc), farcry 2 (ps3/360), left 4 dead (pc), fallout 3 (pc), resident evil 5 (ps3/360), i could go on for a while but these are recent titles, all destroy killzone. it's not even a competition. killzone 2 is hailed as such a great looking game because ppl who only own a ps3 want so desperately to finally have a FPS that can compete with what we've seen on 360 that they trick themselves into seeing more than what is there (or they simply are naive about what's actually out there since they only have that one system). but who cares? if you like killzone 2, great. if you think it looks good, good. but doing give it more credit than it deserves. killzone 2 may be the best looking exclusive fps on ps3, but that doesn't mean much of anything to anyone who's been playing fps on PC for years.
no matter what argument you try to make the following facts can't be denied:
-PS3 and 360 cannot handle any real anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering.
-neither console has the processing power to handle all the geometry in high end pc games (this is why multiplatform games always look and play better on pc).
-neither console has the storage capacity (ram) to handle large amounts of data on the fly.

don't get me wrong, some games do look very nice on console. RE5 being the best i've seen to date. but it doesn't touch PC quality. ask anyone who's played call of duty, left 4 dead, etc for pc if they'd ever go back to playing them on console. nobody in their right mind would.

now, as for crytek, if anyone can make an impressive PC game, they can. but lets not forget how terrible farcry 1 looks on console. it looked GREAT on PC. was the best looking PC game when it launched. then it came to console and it was nearly unbearable. i'm sure crysis will look fine on ps3 and 360, but it's not going to come close to the standards they've set on computer.

@battleaxe, you're a perfect example of a "gamer" that doesn't have any idea what he's talking about. being a fanboy is for nerds. computers are more for geeks than nerds. nerds read comics and wear pocket protectors. geeks are interested in technology. and guess what pushes technology....computers! guess what is about a generation behind in gaming? YOU! for believing your console can live up to that technology. you can call me a nerd all day, but at least i'll be happy knowing ppl who appreciate inferiority are too ignorant and prejudice for me to have to worry about coming across them on Steam.

EDIT: OH! and for the morons talking about price. you can pay 300-400 dollars for one console that will sometimes get games you want to play, then you can buy headsets, HD tvs, charge kits, 10 dollars extra per game, nickle and dime DLC, almost no user made content, an inferior online community, etc. THEN if you want more gaming, you can buy a second console so you have both ps3 and 360 (or wii if you're in your 40s), then you can buy all those accessories again. or you can buy a 1000-2000 dollar pc that will run games 100x better, you'll get games for 50 dollars (often less) with free updates and downloads, access to seemingly endless free dedicated servers (ps3 fanboys, don't focus on that one point to try to counter my argument), user made content, higher resolution, faster load times, map voting, game type voting, server admins to prevent cheating. and after all those things your pc does for gaming, guess what else it can do? be a computer! When i factor together my ps3, my 360, all the controllers, headsets, over priced games, xbox live, my HDtv, surround sound, and DLC, i'm sure my console gaming habit cost much much more than my high end PC. and as soon as i built this thing, i pretty much stopped touching my consoles. pc gaming gives you so much more bang for you buck.

Totally not a biased opinion. Nope.

GamingFun6289d ago

Yup. "PCs are better than consoles" a quote from a PC maker...

Granted PCs will always be more powerful than a console but seeing that consoles are gaming centric they will always have the majority of games.

PotNoodle6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

But the fact is, there isn't really any PC games that are lightyears ahead of console games anymore. Game developers don't want to alienate people by making games that can only be played on REALLY high end PC's.

Sure, pretty much all multiplatform games look much better on PC but most of the time it is just higher res, better reflections and better anti aliasing.

s8anicslayer6289d ago

so how do you explain crysis? no console can run crysis and if and when it is released for consoles it will be completly watered down!

- Ghost of Sparta -6289d ago

What do you gain from telling us that no console can run Crysis? Obviously not, 'cause you know, PC games are not compatible with consoles.

RudeSole Devil6289d ago

so how do you explain Killzone 2? no PC can run Killzone 2 and if and when it is released for PC it will be completely watered down!

Chubear6289d ago (Edited 6289d ago )

Dude, a vast majority of PC gamers can't run Crysis on it's highest settings so what the hell are you talking about? and when you see console games like geow and KZ2 those are great enough and equivalent to medium high settings. Hell, a lot of PC gamers can only run such games on medium settings talkless of Medium high.

Yes yes yes, you can claim we're all noobs cause don't know how to build a $3000 rig from a 50cent box of matches but we are not all ultimate geek nerds.

Even with the Crysis comment always poppin up with PC gamers it's well known that although on it's highest settings with beautiful graphics, the game still plays rather mediocre and normal average. Gameplay in other FPSs like CoD4, R2, Geow, KZ2 etc are way better and please don't lie to yourself about that one cause that'll be pathetic.

I mean look at all the games in the shooter genre that console gamers can talk about constantly: geow1&2, R1&2, KZ2 etc and what do PC gamers throw around every single time? Crysis. The one and only shooter they can hope to make console gamers take a look at and it's only for it's graphics on high settings and not even gameplay.

@3.3

I'm hoping you're being sarcastic with that comment :/

evrfighter6289d ago

@chubear that statement was true 1-2 years ago....a majority of gamers can play crysis nowadays. Maybe not maxed out but your statement is an aged argument. Kind of like "ps3 has no game library"

Chubear6289d ago

where in my comment did you see me state a majority of PC gamers can't run Crysis? In fact, you just said exactly what I said.

Nihilism6289d ago

so my 3.2ghz quad core, 1gig gtx280 video card and 4 gig of ram wont be able to play kz2 will it?, bs. I'll run it at higher res with better frames and probably 4 or 8* antialiasing, fanboys...you are pathetic

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 6289d ago
dkgshiz6289d ago

But the PC never gets any games. I feel really bad for PC fanboys. Theres like zero games to play for the pc.

meatnormous6289d ago

They also get alot of games that are not available on consoles. PC gamers also get a cheaper game and most of the time free DLC. COD4 map pack was free for the pc.

solar6289d ago

you are what we call moronic. yeah we have no games. /rolleyes

hotrider126289d ago

for 600.00 ps3 its games should be equal to high end gaming like alienware (key word) "should be" but its not. but still good graphics

Chubear6289d ago

so when that 600 launch machine now becomes 299 and PC gamers can't run future games cause their $599 uber graphics card cant hack the new latest games 2yrs later, but a 299 PS3 can still run way better games 5 years from now... what then?

IF all you're offering me is a bump in graphics for thousands of $$ more then hey, I'm very happy with geow, Uncharted, Heaven Sword, KZ2 type graphics @ a 299/399 price point.

I don't really have to spend over a grand every 3-4 yrs just for graphics. btw, I thought gaming was all about "teh gameplay" not graphics uh? XD >.>
