Halo Wars What's Wrong with Singleplayer?

OXCGN doesn't think Halo Wars' singleplayer is anywhere near as good as it could've been writing:

"It's not perfect. In fact far from it...

The problem for Halo Wars is that Bungie set such a high bar, not just for the industry at large, but most particularly for every Halo game to follow. And that's predictably where Halo Wars falls short."

The writer then takes issue with the lack of a Covenant campaign and a lacklustre story noting:

"The FPS trilogy always existed in fear of alienating the core audience and their love for MC... Halo Wars on the other hand is an exercise in video game storytelling existing merely to service the action. I don't care about the cardboard cut out stereotypes...

Telling a separate Covenant story [instead] provides a relatively fertile green field for storytelling..."

Superfragilistic6280d ago

I'd much prefer a Covenant story. The gung ho American hero is gettin old.

gaminoz6279d ago

Too right!

"We're Team America, F. yeah!"

Yawn.

XboxOZ3606279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

Well it IS getting tired and borig, every second game, or more to the point, 4/5 games are the usual Yeah, America saves the day sort of thing and there's no real meat in them. At least when games come around that involve other countries, they ad spice and flavour to old styles, even if it is in the same genre or field.

But, then you get the clowns that say "yeah man, hate the russian accent, what are they trying to prove - thing is, they are talking about a Russian dev building a game based in Russia . .HELLO . .It's much like Tom Cruise play the role of an SS officer with an american accent . .hello . .someone called him an actor, not likely.

Mind you, I'm NOT having a go at american's per-se, just the idiolic industry that drives the notion forward that the world begins and ends in the US, even to the point of the international date line not being recognized as the "start of the day" .. . but that's another story.

Some of OXCGN's best supporters are from Nth America and we have two contributors from there. It's just this silly notion the game dev seem to think they have to push.

XboxOZ3606280d ago

I'd have to admit, the ho-hum American Hero thing wears thing after awhile. So a new approach, along the lines of the original books would be a great deal more refreshing.

REALgamer6279d ago

I saw them in a bookstore yesterday, was considering picking them up.

Superfragilistic6279d ago

Read what you will into that though. Some will say that means they're really good, others will say its just more crap from Microsoft for dumb easily pleased gamers to buy.

I wouldn't know. Never read them. But I'd have a guess as somewhere in the middle. ;)

XboxOZ3606279d ago

If youcan grab them, do so, you'll understand the real basis behind the game, any game for that matter. As an interactive medium can NEVER give you the same depth and detail as a book can.

The sad thing is, that many find reading boring or tedious these days, yet by not doing so, they miss out of the nuts of the whole game/series.

DO get them if you can, you'll be glad you did.

Godem6280d ago

I liked the campaign gameplay but the story was pretty stale..

and the voice of the main character was highly annoying. As were the regular light hearted insults and jokes, that kind of killed the seriousness of the 3 official Halo games.

It DID need a covenant campaign too really extend the story and length of the game. And it would have been extremely bloody awesome to have a Flood campaign too... working for gravemind could be fun! But i guess then that makes it waaay to similar to Starcraft, which could be one of the reasons Ensemble avoided multiple campaigns?

anyway, my rant/oppinion is over.

Superfragilistic6280d ago

I think its got more to do with Ensemble not having enough time or resources. Thakyou MS. :P

I hope we do see new campaigns as DLC expansions though. Playing as or with the Gravemind could be a far more mindbending experience.

XboxOZ3606279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

Actually, there's a great article on Gameindustry news from Ensemble about how THEY were the ones that created their downfall, as they said, they were their own worst enemy. I'll see if I can dig up the link.

Here it is, moreover or to the point, a victim of their own success. So now that they have started up TWO new studios, they are not going to follow the same line and ideally do things differently. One of the studios I believe is working on the next Halo War, so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

gaminoz6279d ago

On the plus side it is a good strategy game at least.
The author agrees:

"It’s made RTS exciting and accessible on a console like never before and has the distinct and authentic smell of the ever-deepening Halo universe."

Superfragilistic6279d ago

Yeah I think he's just lamenting the fact that it could've been so much more.

darkmurder6279d ago

The flood really needed to be in the single player campain as playable.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_200d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto200d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay199d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730199d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty200d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602200d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty200d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981200d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts200d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno200d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE199d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai200d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex200d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover199d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator200d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia200d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

This collab proves that New Halo games coming to Playstation: CONFIRMED

The last pillar has fallen XD

Tedakin280d ago

I mean Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox in 2 weeks. It has a Playstation Studios logo on it. The first pillar has fallen.

lukasmain280d ago

LOL you think a live service game is a Playstation pillar? hahahahahaha

1Victor278d ago

The first pillar has fallen.
🤦🏿 Well the competitor’s house already got 2/3 pillars down and the 3rd one is rotted to the core about to fall any minute now bringing down the glass house of cards down FOREVER 🤣
THE WAR IS OVER DEAL WITH IT

Reaper22_278d ago

It doesnt matter. You can get playstation stuff on PC. That pillar fell a long time ago. And next gen it will continue to fall.

Tedakin279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

@lukasmain Their one successful live service game, and their most successful game in the last few years. Yeah I do.

lukasmain279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

It's not a pillar. Expect ALL live serviice games to come over. That includes that upcoming Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls as well at some point. But the PILLARS are the amazing single player games. The games they built their brand on. Helldivers LAUNCHED on PC. It's not a Playstation Pillar
