Why Sony is Surpassing Nintendo in Game Development

Sony has the biggest first-party development core in the current gaming market. Is that enough to beat Nintendo as the best video game developer?

They're not surpassing Nintendo, they're matching them.

Nobody has ever matched Nintendos first party, thankfully,Sony saw what relying on 3rd parties would lead to and thus made the conscious decision to invest heavily in internal development.

Just wait,if you think quality 3rd party developers are going to be dishing out exclusives with all consoles having a 20 Million+ installbase, you're going to be very surprised this year.

Veeeeeeeery surprised.

swiftshot936287d ago (Edited 6287d ago )

both sony and Nintendo internally developed the greatest games of all time period.
Problem is I havent seen anything like that from Nintendo this generation save Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3.
Also, sony takes soooo damn long with their games, almost if not all developers at sony (first and second party) develop their own game engine, that takes a lot of time and money. In the long run it is good though. Each of their games have their own stylized look and are graphical juggernauts. I would hate for all their games to be using the same engine, but I just wish there was a way to speed the process.

Edit: I also agree with the new franchise thing. I dont think we've seen a single new hardcore game IP from Nintendo this generation. This simply needs to stop.

Personally, I think Sony has surpassed Nintendo in terms of innovation. Over the years Sony has created new IPs, gathered many strong developers and has frankly, tried a lot of new things. Nintendo's studios are great, but they keep reiventing old IPs as if something was wrong with the old formula. They haven't created any new IPs and third party support isn't as robust as it used to be.

Just my 2 cents.

jams_shop6287d ago

Can anyone post every/all IPs for each company?

thebudgetgamer6287d ago (Edited 6287d ago )

a link to all games published by Sony
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

and games by Nintendo

:) edit i think the big difference is Sony is always expanding its ips. that's why sony has never needed one mascot to sell systems.

while everyone knows when Nintendo brings out their big guns, everyone notices. its just not as spread out as sonys line up

Nintendo has 2D IP crown

Sony has 3D IP crown

IMO

We could be so lucky to experience the glory days of the Super Nintendo again, from any company. My happiest gaming memories came from the 2D era, an era Nintendo has never come close to repeating or exceeding. Really, no one has, but Sony does a great job trying to push the industry forward. The PlayStation lured me away from Nintendo and has yet to give me a reason to regret it 2 generations later.

SaiyanFury6287d ago

@Snoogins and DemonstalkerX

I think you're both right. Nintendo ruled the 2D market back with the SNES, and it still has a market here in the modern day, but it's Sony that truly rules the 3D market, and has for almost 15 years. It's no wonder that media loves to nitpick Sony for every minor fallacy.

Snoogins said it best: the best memories of the 16-bit age came from the SNES, but also the Genesis. As with you, Sony took me from the Nintendo brand and they consistently move the industry forward, both in maturity and in technology. I've been with Sony now for 14 years since my first PS console, and they've always given me what I love.

Isn't surpassing Nintendo is game development. What planet are these people from. Sony's first party is getting stronger out of neccesity to stay competitive, much like how Nintendo had to during the N64 days.

TheBand1t6287d ago (Edited 6287d ago )

That's not to say Nintendo doesn't have excellent first party devs, as that is NOT the case.
But I prefer Sony's first party devs simply because I got a bit tired of playing as Mario, Samus, and Link. And that's MY opinion.

RememberThe3576287d ago

A lot of people grew up with Nintendo's awesome first party games and they feel a connection to the studios that made them. However, the industry has changed. Nintendo is once again the most successful but the quality of software has taken a huge hit. Sony is hanging at the bottom of the sales charts with some of the best developers in the world in their pocket. Nintendo no longer is putting out the quality software that Sony is putting out (and this is my opinion). That is not to say that Nintendo is not putting out great games, they're just not putting out the same amount of great games. And frankly, they don't have to. They making so much bank right now I'm sure they're going crazy with R&D. This is not an issue of Sony vs. Nintendo and that purely because they can't hang with each other. Nintendo can't hang with Sony's hardcore and Sony can't touch Nintendo's casual. But who knows what next generation will bring? Either way we'll get good games from some of the best developers in the world.

KruLLit6287d ago (Edited 6287d ago )

I will never get tired playing as Mario, Link, Samus and I dont know why others will. Because the changes between the games is more major than for example: Gears of War 1 to 2.

Gr816287d ago

You never hear ppl b!tch about "third parties can't compete with Sony" How many times have you heard "third parties can't compete with Nintendo" there is reason for this. (Besides the attempt to limit third parties abandoning the other systems)

Nintendo has been synonomous with quality since its endeavor into the gaming industry. Which wouldn't be where it is at today without the Big N's contributions. Sony does not compare to Nintendo first party dev teams, they just don't.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg33d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree33d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai33d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
