PS3 "cluster" to Replicate Super Computer

The Sony Playstation 3 (PS3), Xbox and Nintendo Wii have captivated a generation of computer gamers with bold graphics and rapid-fire animation. But these high-tech toys can do a lot more than just play games. At North Carolina State University, Dr. Frank Mueller imagined using the power of the new PS3 to create a high-powered computing environment for a fraction of the cost of the supercomputers on the market.

So these are the people buying the PS3?
"it costs less than some desktop computers" I wonder if paused and asked what "desktop" means. having 8 PS3 sucking on those power outlets and heating the room will guarantee you a nice set of balls with testicular cancer.

bigj7010d ago (Edited 7010d ago )

I thought Sony said that the PS3 was already a super computer.LOL So it takes 8 to make a SMALL super computer. That shows how the CELL is not as powerful as everyone thinks(including sony). The PS3 is a joke. You can look at their awful games and thats enough proof.

SimmoUK7009d ago

LOL do you see them using xbox360's for there super computer?NO

Do you think Sony and IBM spent over a Billion Dollars on the CELL for nothing... CELL is a monster your just beginning to see the start of that all it is time for developers to program for it...

Once LAIR and Heavenly Sword are out you'll be the joke...

power0919997009d ago

It helps to know what your talking about before you go making an assumption of anything. You just made yourself out to be a fool, with your statements.

I am not saying the PS3 is the end all be all but.....

The calculations that a single Cell can run compaired to an everyday CPU is like night and day.

When run in parrellel as displayed in this article think of it this way.

For a educational institute that is constantly setback by budgets, and cutbacks. You can easily run heavy duty calculations, including large formula's for pennys on the dollar. An actual IBM server with 8 or so Cell CPU's, would cost in the Millions.

You do the math.

I am not saying it's 100% possible but what they are doing could do the world a lot of good someday.

I remember hearing a while ago they were going to attempt to write folding@home to run on the PS3. Imagine the good that could come of that.

Silver3607009d ago

if you read the article you see that they are constrained by the memory of the PS3. If they could get a computer from IBM with eight cells in it would be faster. Not hating but the ps3 is a gaming/entertainment machine not a supercomputer. It will play beautiful games and beautiful blu ray movies it will not solve the worlds problems.

0LDSCH00L7009d ago

Has anybody bothered to explain to this moron that these console CPU's are stripped down and are nowhere as powerful or efficient as the real thing?

power0919997009d ago

You mean explain to the moron: North Carolina State University, Dr. Frank Mueller?

No I am sure nobody has told the Dr. that he is a moron yet. You are the first.

Marty83707009d ago

The only difference between PS3 Cell & Cell used by IBM in there Cell Blades are that the PS3 uses 1 Cell Chip that has 1PPE & 7 SPE's and IBM use 2 Cell chips and each Cell chip has 1PPE & 8 SPE's.

no_more_heroes7008d ago

that article from way back when which talked about the ps3 and 360 processors being in-order processors instead of out-of-order processors which makes their 3.2GHz clock speed more like 2.4 (or some computer bull$#!+ like that)? Or are you just being a prick?

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde28d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy28d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga29d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199229d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga29d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman29d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box29d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion28d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7229d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7529d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit29d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14929d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7729d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
