The Escapist Review: Killzone2

Poor Sony. It's hard to sympathize with them these days. Poised for another easy first-place finish in the console race, they released a device with a $600 premium just in time for a global recession. Of course, that price point was part of the plan all along. From its first baby steps onto the market, the PlayStation 3 was poised to be the connoisseur's gaming system - its sleek curves and glossy black finish recalling less a child's toy than a concert grand piano. But while they may have created the first piece of videogame hardware you could comfortable sit next to the humidor in a book-lined study, its platform-exclusive software doesn't seem nearly that exclusive.

One day someone will do a review and instead of calling the controls sluggish they will properly use the term "weighty". He does however remark that L4D employs twitch controls. Also there was the paragraph that seems as if the reviewer could not make up his mind:

"Hop into the game's multiplayer "Warzone" and you're bombarded with (initially meaningless) decisions. There's a Team Fortress 2-style class system, but it only becomes available once you've unlocked new class choices through a persistent point system. You can mix and match "badges" with unique special abilities (again, once you've earned them through point grinding). You can even select your preferred spawn point each time you die, but with games this varied and fast paced, it's often hard to tell where you're headed. It's clearly a system with a ton of depth, but you feel like you're about to drown the moment you try to wade in for a dip."

There is a ton of depth. Grasping the Killzone 2 MP is not for idiots that are used to simplistic online level up fare such as COD4.

thereapersson6298d ago

You have to keep quiet though! You're receiving disagrees because you are hurting the feelings of fanboys and n00bs everywhere... :)

marichuu6298d ago

I haven't unlocked anything yet, but is it possible to customize weapons later on?
It better be, because it doesn't really seem to have that many weapons to choose from as you only have a selection of 2 to begin with.

The controls are fine until you notice some frustrating parts in the game, like the ATAC fight.

Is it really that hard to accept that there is obviously something "wrong" with the aiming system since so many people are complaining about it? Does it have to be for noobish and fanboy reasons? Why can't someone just have the opinion that it doesn't feel right no matter how "realistic" it's trying to be... it's a game, it's supposed to be fun, and realism isn't always fun for everyone.

SRU96006298d ago

"One day someone will do a review and instead of calling the controls sluggish they will properly use the term "weighty"."

You can call them whatever you want, they will still suck.

Seriously, just because the "devs" want the controls this way does not mean that gamers feel the same way (outside of the blind fanboys, that is).

It's a very good game with very bad controls.
That is the truth.

TheBand1t6298d ago

I, for one, prefer the slightly slower controls, as I was getting tired of those COD-esque ridiculous fast paced games, so I can appreciate what KZ2 is doing with theirs.

marichuu6298d ago

@1.4
I run out of ammo before anything in that fight... I miss a lot, even with the rocket launcher when the ATAC is electrocuted.

Also, I just killed 2 people online meleeing them because they couldn't aim and kill me...

legendkilla6298d ago

reveiwer getting owned by me in Killzone 2 online... ouch sour grapes, from a no name website..

solidjun56298d ago

once you learn it, it becomes second nature.

"It's a very good game with very bad controls.
That is the truth. "
Nope, just your truth. Let's not get confused please.

"Is it really that hard to accept that there is obviously something "wrong" with the aiming system since so many people are complaining about it?"

Well is it really hard to accept there it's fine since there are tons of people have no problem with the controls? Seriously? I know it's not a twitch shooter and I'll admit It took a bit more time for me to get adjusted to it, but just like people's beloved COD4, after a while, you become good at it.

DJ6298d ago

For its weighty controls and lack of auto-aim. I found it really liberating when I joined the Multiplayer Beta, and the final controls in the retail version are even better.

I feel like an actual person when I move around in the game, not just a floating camera.

Ve3tro6298d ago

The Escapist is a very large and popular site.

marichuu6298d ago

@1.7
Reason I used quotes for the word wrong was exactly because there isn't anything broken about them, it just doesn't feel right even though it's something you can master with time.

I like my shooters to be swift and precise, which isn't the case with this weighty feel. This is also the reason I didn't like the first Gears that much, it had this sense of weight on the characters which I never really got used to.

Thank you for being constructive about the case, bubbles to you, kind sir.

solidjun56298d ago

so I'm glad you didn't take that way.

Anyway, I understand you like yours quick and I did at first. I was like "WTF" when I started playing the multiplayer. Then I found the sensitivies that suit me and while It's still not as quick as COD4, I started getting better and better and now (while it's not second nature...yet), I'm more comfortable. I'll admit, it's going to take a while to master but I'm sure it will be rewarding.

UnwanteDreamz6298d ago

I just don't understand why so many complain about the controls. The difference in the way this game controls compared to others was never a secret. They said it woldn't feel like other shooters you had been playing. All the beta testers talked about the controls being slower.

So please tell me why the game releases and people still buy it thinking it will be like COD. If you want to play a game with swifter movements then go play one. Just stop trying to get them to change it because you don't want to learn something new.

callahan096298d ago

@SRU:

Blind fanboys? So now if you like Killzone 2 and think it's controls are fine, you're a blind fanboy?

Nope, I guess it isn't possible for someone to enjoy the game and be comfortable with controlling it unless you're deluded by bias. /sarcasm

odisho686298d ago

dude once u get used to it it's awesome...if ur not used to it by the sniper level ur gonna have a problem...but seriously tho the controls are perfect...i'm using the alt 2 control scheme and i'm loving this game...there is nothing wrong with the controls and my player moves as if he's a real soldier not like he can run like freakin usain bolt with all these weapons attached to him and still be able to pull off incredible aiming skills that would be impossible even for the best real life soldiers

dantesparda6298d ago (Edited 6298d ago )

And there is nothing wrong with them. They feel fine to me, and i like the way they feel. And i also dont think there really is a big difference between them and any other FPS, but like everything else fanboy related nowadays, it all ridiculously exaggerated (im talking about the media & the 360 fanboys)

beavis4play6298d ago

they add to the immersiveness of the game.
i'm so tired of the "twitch" shooters. very unrealistic. i hope more FPS games go towards this kind of realism.

rockleex6298d ago

So of course it won't be hard to aim in COD.

But I still remember when I first picked it up, it took me just a little less amount of time than Killzone 2 before I was exceptional at aiming and shooting.

Anyways, let anyone who hasn't played COD yet try COD, and they will aim like a retard. ^_^

RumbleFish6298d ago

Why don't people realize that those who complain about the controls do not mean the slower, weightier feel of the game.

I'm allright with the slow controls and the weighty style. Just remove the lag from the controls. It does abso*******lutely not make any sense to have lag in the controls of an FPS!!! This is rediculous!

And most of the people who do not complain just act like this game was a holy cow. Wake up! Even a near perfect game like Killzone 2 may have a major flaw.

If GG can sort that out the game will even be better. Better than anything on the console market. Think about that instead of calling the many gamers who don't feel allright with the controls stupid. Just one week after release one third of my friendlist has returned to CoD and one third has returned to SOCOM. I asked them why! Because of the controller lag!

And again for all of you who still don't get it: this is not about having another CoD, this has nothing to do with the slower and weightier style of the game. It's all just about a noticable lag of the controls!

SuperM6298d ago

dont whine about the ATAC fight. If you had trouble its only because you suck. did it first try in about 30 seconds. It was piss easy.

morganfell6298d ago

Use the bunker and you won't die at all against the ATAC.

Killjoy30006298d ago (Edited 6298d ago )

Wat I don't understand is why the aiming system (in first person) in rainbow six vegas was so lauded yet it clearly followed the same premise of realism. same with graw. sorry to compare a ford focus to a ferrari here, but if you look at the history you'll know what i'm talking about.

MisterNiwa6298d ago

Controls are perfect, if the most people wouldnt be that ret*rded and just start with the 2nd one without even playing the 1st, they wouldnt complain, its almost the same controls.

=/

Me was General in 10 hours of online gaming, when i first entered i started at being place 2~5 now im almost everytime 1~3...

Seriously, i dont want to play CoD4 ever again, the controls sure suck major ass lol.

kwicksandz6298d ago

the devs of lair wanted motion controls for their game. that didnt make it the right decision either.

LiquifiedArt6297d ago (Edited 6297d ago )

Its really simple. The people whos COD skills don't carry over 1:1 are pissy. Plain and simple. I'm in the Top 4 every single game MY FIRST TIME PLAYING!!! and it feels amazing. Not just doing well, but the feeling and feedback you get from killing someone. Every kill feels like the completion of a small tidbit task.

This isnt Auto-aim heaven (HALO). This is a serious FPS for SERIOUS clan goers alike. Headshot kills are hard, but are Rewarding. I've went on 6-0 streaks.

NOTE: I use the best controls (STANDARD) and unlike COD ONLY iron sights when it is neccessary, otherwise I shoot from the hip in controlled Bursts. I personally think the people bit@hing are the people playing the game entirely wrong, both mentally and physically.
But Damn what a great experience when you settle into it. Unmatched!

This game requires more planning then run blindly and spray.

Positioning > Twitching
(just as in real life)

You hear only the complainers. Think about all those who are not complaining...
If 9 people like a product, I can garantee you that you will only hear the 1 person who dont´t like it.

negative6298d ago (Edited 6298d ago )

All of you Sony fanboys are the same. The controls are SLUGGISH, NOT weighty. LOL

The game just isn't that good. Word of mouth and sales will prove that, not hyped up scores.

And I own BOTH consoles, PS3 and 360. I haven't started the KZ2 campaign yet. Only multi so far in the first 5 days. I just might sell it now after my experience so far.

Gran Turismo of shooters.... ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

red5ive6298d ago

hate this guy's voice. he sounds half asleep, the douche. he keeps making half-assed comparisons with COD4, L4D, and Team Fortress. he really accentuates the fact that ps3 was $600 at one point and that we all have a reason to finally purchase it. stupid guy. escapist... more like..... moron.... ist.

pwnsause6298d ago

poor COD players who play KZ2. Did they forget that this is the "Gran Turismo" of shooters when it comes to realism?

ChilliDemon6298d ago

"Gran Turismo" of shooters". I like that phrase.

ParanoidMonkey6298d ago

Sticking with the racing analogies, what does that make ARMA or Operation Flashpoint? Tickets to the biggest race in the world with an all inclusive free car of your own to race in?

Killzone 2 is incredible, don't get me wrong, but let's not get carried away here.

Mutley4166298d ago

LOL *pulls copy out of the humidor*...*snifs box*....ahhh PWNEGE
This game aint for the weak minded and is no walk in the park...kinda like Socom on Steroids & Gamma Rays(incredible hulk) not easy, but well worth the learning curve-

can`t wait to level all the way up-

Torch6298d ago (Edited 6298d ago )

"Gran Turismo" of shooters..."

Good one. Bubbles for coining a potentially soon-to-be-popular phrase.

As far as I'm concerned, the controls are perfect; auto-aim/aim-assist is for toddlers and should henceforth be limited to product deriving from Fisher-Price.

Rythrine6298d ago

I admit that it took me awhile to get used to the aiming but now I got the hang of it and its awesome. I really love the realism that GG put in this game. I went back to play R2 just to compare and its like a "baby aiming game" like you mentioned. You have to specifically pick your shots in this game which I really liked. It puts strategy and not just bullet-spraying.

Just a tip: Its better to shoot from the hip with burst shots than zooming in. I only use the zoom when I see a camper from a distance.

Figboy6298d ago

ages ago, and got disagreed with! lol.

ah well.

i don't get why people b*tch so much about the controls.

the media were constantly comparing it to CoD4 during previews, even when they KNEW that it was nothing like CoD, and now they want to run with it when the gamers went into KZ2 expecting CoD4, and got, well, Killzone 2.

i personally love the controls, and i'm doing rather well in MP, and i can literally SEE myself improving with each match.

i remember in the beta, i was averaging about 5-10 kills per match at the beginning. by the end of the beta, i was averaging at least 30 kills per match.

you DO get better at the game the more you play. it's the same with just about EVERY game, so i don't see why this is suddenly intolerable in Killzone 2. personally, i thought the controls in Gears of War 1 and 2 were too sluggish for my tastes, but nobody complained this much about it.

double standards and hypocrisy are simply out of control this generation of gaming.

RumbleFish6298d ago

Exactly! You don't get it! Everything ist fine with the controls despite the lag! LOL! Everybody is ******** when it comes to internet connections and lag and here you are: this fabulous game has a lag of almost 0.2 seconds allready implemented. You surely would change your ISP if your connection had such a latency! LOL!!!!!

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX585d ago (Edited 585d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne585d ago (Edited 585d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro585d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken584d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown585d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72585d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken584d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya584d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast585d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood585d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro814d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72814d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_814d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga814d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos814d ago (Edited 814d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23814d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000814d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin814d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole814d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix814d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989814d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor814d ago (Edited 814d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Michiel1989814d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1118d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1118d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1118d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491117d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381118d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1118d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1118d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381118d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1118d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761118d ago

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1117d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1118d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

lukasmain1118d ago
