GamePro: Killzone 2 vs. Halo 3

Six years ago, game pubs and the rest of video game playing world first heard about an ambitious new first-person shooter being developed for the PS2 by an Amsterdam-based studio no one had ever heard of. The game was called Killzone, and it was immediately hailed by numerous sources as having the potential to be a bona fide "Halo Killer."

The reality was that Killzone was not a video game that could be accurately labeled as something capable of squashing the Halo franchise, and this is coming from someone who used to play the original Killzone religiously with all their buddies for a solid year after its release.

Now that the reviews are in for Killzone 2 (read GamePro's perfect 5 out of 5 star review of Killzone 2), it's clear that Guerilla Games has finally delivered a game they can be proud of. From its riveting campaign to its robust multiplayer support, Killzone 2 nails just about everything they didn't quite achieve with their first game. But how does it compare to the last installment in the Halo series, Halo 3, the franchise it was originally set out to kill?

TheColbertinator6279d ago

After playing both,I can honestly say they are not even close to comparison.Killzone 2 is on the edge with Cod4 and Crysis.Halo 3 is on the same sci-fi style as Resistance 2,Gears 2,and Quake 4.

Killzone 2 is certainly more intense than Halo 3 however.

Nelson M6279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

I Totaly Agree

It Rapes Gears 2 aswell

Stubacca6279d ago

I agree fully. Resistance has a gritty, war-like feel. Gears of War does this but also has the Sci-Fi riff.

But anyone who has played Killzone 2 knows it is the best of the lot.

Aquanox6278d ago

How about comparing with non 2 years old games?

Halo 3 ODST might be a better answer.

Capt CHAOS6278d ago

Halo3 is nothing like that, alot more tactical, So waste of time comparing them.

dustgavin6278d ago

Your work neighbor is partially right. You can run and gun or play in tactical manner in Killzone 2.

let the garbage stop, both games are good. They have different features. Its impossible for one game to "kill" another. God..

xwabbit6279d ago

comparing a 640p game with 1080p one loL. I think there's no competition there xD

kapedkrusader6279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

...up-scalable to 1080i. It's on the back of the box.

6279d ago
WildArmed6279d ago

wow.. com'on Halo3 is waay older.. give it a break.

If k2 didnt out do it, i'd be worried.

Gamepro is just taking advantage of the fanboy for both games and consoles..

Killzone??? PLEASE!! Talk to mean when Beyonce sings a song about you. Then you'll be considered BIG TIME!! LMFAO!!! I kid, I kid!! I know what it's about!

But in all honesty, just let these games be. Halo fans are happy with Halo and KillZone fans are happy with Killzone. Why can't we just let people be happy and rejoice in having awesome shooters on both systems!!

Sarah Palin6279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

I played KZ2 at my sisters house. Its not bad. Its pretty, but it just seems like COD4 with better textures, and more lighting effects(and the character modeling is nice too). But none of this matter when your playing the game. I mean, sure when you take some stills/screenshots they look great, but nobody in there right mind is staring at "shadows being cast by trees", while in the middle of a fire-fight. If they are, they prolly get killed online(or in campaign for that matter)....ALOT. I dont know, it just didn't seem as "fun" to me as Halo 3 is online. And im sorry to let some of your fanboys down, but "fun" is the biggest factor in a GAME.

Visually, sure, KZ2 looks better. But its kinda expected at this point. All I wanna know is, what does KZ2 do for the player that keeps him/her coming back for more? Bungie nailed online play with Halo 3, and a ton of kids are still playing it. Looks arent everything--just look at Haze. It looks better than Halo 3(kinda) and its a P.O.S.

Dont forget---FUN MATTERS

Skizelli6279d ago

Well Xbox fans, that's a wrap. The PS3 fanboys won because GamePro said so. Pack it up, go home and wait patiently for Xbox 3. :P

But seriously, I'll never understand why people care about stuff like this so much. It's all just opinion. Nothing more. It still doesn't change the fact that Halo is still popular, and for a reason, nor take away all the fun I had while playing it with friends over the years. Something bigger and badder will always come along, but does it truly "kill" something of old? Classics are classics for a reason. Halo and everything since then hasn't diminished my appreciation for GoldenEye.

I really feel sorry for the people that think stuff like this matters.

0verdrive6279d ago

i mean, aside from this being a stupid article, there are just two categories that really matter: single player, and multiplayer. who the hell cares about anything else. killzone wins both, so i guess gamepro thinks killzone is better.

KingME6279d ago

Why would gamepro compare Killzone 2 to a game the was release 18 months prior. Had Killzone 2 not been better, both sony and Guerilla Software both should be embarrassed. I mean, I think I can beat you in a card game if I get to see your cards first. (Especially if I get 18 months to develop my hand.)

Anyway, I just thought the article was pointless. A better comparison would have been a direct comparison of killzone vs COD4 or Fallout. Either way, lame article.

Alcon6279d ago

Who proclaimed that it was a Halo killer? the developpers? Sony? It was the media and as usual fanboys. Unless the makers of Killzone said it would be a Hallo killer there is no point in compairing them at all. Both games are great (although I never played Hallo, general concensus is that its a great game (franchise)), so just leave it at that. No need to give fanboys more chances to talk bull****
Enjoy the games. Each has its positive and negative, but overall, both are really great, end of story

CommonSense6279d ago

sony fanboys everywhere, and not an intelligent one in the bunch.

you're brainwashed, people! wake up!!!

killzoned is a term that should only be applied to killzone, as it is a huge disappointment and an incredible waste of money.

it's nothing special, nothing impressive, nothing new, it's nothing. just another high budget let down like almost every other console release this generation.

in fact, halo is the only big budget game that did exactly what it said it was going to do. it revamped halo 2 and made it slightly better and added a ton of new, compelling multiplayer features like forge, video cap from any angle, and picture saves.

criticize halo all you want, fanboys. but in the end, it's got solid controls (unlike killzone's atrocity), it's got a fun, high-replay value multiplayer, a co-op (4 player), and still the best match making system of any console game.

but seriously, why are we even comparing a game that sold more day one than the other game will sell total? why are we comparing a game that took 5 years to make that is basically a bare-bones version of the other game that took half the time to make? and am i the only one that sees no point in ever trying to have a legitimate game comparison in a generation plagued by blind, sony fanboys? there are so many more sony fanboys than sensible, logical console gamers that there is no way to actually have a real discussion.

logicless fanboys will just say things like halo 2.5 and whatever other generic garbage they can spew out to try to justify the money they wasted on their paper weight system.

360 sucks, but ps3 takes it to another level. talk about a huge step backwards for console gaming.

if you want to trick yourself into thinking you've got the best gaming machine ever made, you probably already have a ps3, and if you want a console that offers a few okay games, a lot of good online features, and a real online community, get a 360. if you want to see REAL graphics and games that belong in this generation and be part of the best online community, get a pc.

in closing, killzone 2 is a horrid game that deserves none of the hype, halo is 2 years old and it's sad that it's still the best console fps, ps3 has no good games (sept ratchet and clank) so killzone probably looks good by comparison, and when it comes to FPS (and RTS), the only way to play is on PC

6279d ago
JokesOnYou6279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

Then just keep staring at the screen, are you still on the first level?, lmfao nah but seriously great graphicaly and although its not as "OMG" some of you say it is, its still the top notch, especially the lighting, again the best I ever seen on a console and I'm a graphics whore myself so I can really appreciate what GG did with the game graphicaly. Now other than that imo, its a little of a mix bag of better shooters, and I'm not going to throw around the lame "innovative" tag because I think you can say that about most games but it is missing that signature "Killzone thing" that makes it different or standout from other shooters, aside from graphics I don't think its exceeds shooters like Halo3 with a rich story history from the Halo universe, gameplay and depth of features is what keeps Halo3 revelant even among todays best shooters, Gears again is in your face action with "roadie run", "curb stomp" and "chain saw battles", COD4 superb graphics and strong online with Ranking and incentive type multiplayer...it lacked somethings but at the time it came out it was a overall great experience, so is KZ2 I just think at this point it could have brough alot more to the table....especially since sony has invested so much in this game.

JOY

damm, my first post "deleted by mod", ??? huh? nothing I said was offensive, I gave my opinion on an opinionated story...damm whats the comment section for...mods are just sensitive these days I guess.

darthv726279d ago

Jokes did say it was his opinion so really he isn't wrong. In your view he is but in his he is not. I have been playing kz2 off and on since I got it. I am at the point where you have to blow up these two mortars. I have picked up the flamethrower for the first time and I really like the realistic effect of how the flame shoots out. Roasting some helgast is fun.

I can honestly say that up to this point in the game I have not been wowed either. It isnt a bad thing as I have been running through playing it like I would any other fps. I die some times but mostly I use my sights and pick off guy helmets from a distance. It seems very typical up to this point.

Graphically it is impressive but it is expected. If it wasnt better than halo or gears then sony would have allot to answer to. Maybe there will be something to wow me later on but so far it is a very nice looking run and gun typical type of game (halo 3 was as well). Online is fun when I am able to play (time is of the issue with work and kids) and I did manage to up my rank to corporal (wooohooo) after playing the first day.

It is very solid game with some minor issues thrown in for balance. I would like to shoot natko in the face but the game wont let me. Go figure...when he is down I usually leave him but he somehow manages to come back. He just annoys me!!!

I give it a very solid 8.5 for now.

blackpanther256279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

yeah lighting doesn't matter. Sarcasm

If you played the game a lot you would know that you can find out where campers are and other people shooting from far away just from the muzzle flash from their weapon. Or the Fact that you can target a enemy from far away because of their glowing eyes or flashlight on the chest.

Even the particle effects in the game gets in your way in multilayer when you are looking down the scoop and dust from the ground block your view for a split second. Please the game is not just about looks and the things which make it look good is used to make gameplay feel real

beatrixkiddo6279d ago

what the heck. i got deleted and all i said was how awesome kz2 looks and how halo still has a place in my heart as the first fps i ever played but doesn't hold a candle to kz2. I guess someone got his panties in a bunch!

arika6279d ago (Edited 6279d ago )

i am just also stating my experience while playing killzone 2. i think the last fps games that i played was resistance 2 and call of duty 4, at that time i was really impressed with those shooters but when i played killzone 2 it was a big upgrade on everything, from the realistic graphics, fun and addictive gameplay and top notch online multiplayer. all i am saying is killzone 2 has set a new benchmark for console fps. almost everyone here agrees that it is the best fps graphically and couple that with solid controls then you have something special that is very hard to beat. you don't have to change a proven gameplay and controls, what game developers can do is improve on the things that they can and that is to make the game more fun, realistic and entertaining, which is the main purpose of the games anyway. right? so killzone has done what is set out to do, which is to be the leader of the pack, and it has certainly done just that.

i give killzone 2 a solid 9.5/10

PEACE

Tarasque6279d ago

Ok since we are throwing opinions out, i will not mention the controls of KZ2. But i will mention of how crappy it runs online and it isn't so much lag it drops major frames to unplayable at times. If i play for more than a hour at a time it hurts my eyes and gives me a headache from being so unstable in the frames department. Maybe they will patch it, and make it run smoother.

DERKADER6279d ago

WOW, a Halo killer how many years after the first Halo came out? Don't get me wrong I love KZ2 but it seams as though Sony is always a year behind.

arika6278d ago

now that the ps3 and guerilla games have proven themselves, now the question goes back to xbox 360. does xbox 360 have a game that can match or outdo killzone 2 or any ps3 exclusives like uncharted 2 and god of war 3?

Danja6278d ago

well all I have to say is I been playing KZ2 all weekend..and all night...

the game is amazing....the SP portion id EPIC....the graphics looks way better in motion and the graphics in the game looks better as you progress in latter levels...MP is flawless ..the servers are running smooth...no lag nuttin...well don GG

RememberThe3576278d ago

I lagged once, and I'm on crappy DSL. What the hell are you playing on? Try reseting you country and timezone.

Aquanox6278d ago

Sure, compare Killzone 2, a game that has grabbed bits from all the best shooters around that came out after Halo 3, versus a game that keeps innovating by itself.

Lets see how Halo 3 ODST turns out in comparison to this well structured, yet far from iconic or innovative (unlike COD, Halo and Gears series) game named Killzone 2.

edgeofblade6278d ago

Killzone 2... great, amazing, gorgeous game.

Halo 3... legendary, iconic, smooth game.

They are both great. But I still give the edge to Halo 3 if only for Forge mode. Everywhere else, they are equal of close to equal. But forge is something VERY special and innovative. Sure there are tons of level editors, but only LBP suprasses it on consoles, as far as I'm concerned, and that's a different genre all together.

But I'm not calling KZ2 bad by ANY stretch of the imagination. After you tweak the controls to your liking, it plays a lot better. I would prefer to sight my guns with a trigger, but that's not a deal breaker for me. In the end, it plays like a hybrid of Halo and COD... I just sometimes wish it would choose one... but again, not a bad game.

Clearly Halo haters will be the majority of my disagrees, but there is no reason they can't co-exist. Between Halo, Killzone, Gears, and Resistance, we can show Nintendo and the rest of the market that there is STILL a goldmine in hardcore games and little sustainability in casual games.

This should be about screwing Nintendo for abandoning us, not about screwing the other of the two companies doing the right things.

brodels6279d ago

this article doesn't really say anything about the graphics at all. what's important to note is that killzone 2 beat halo 3 on single player and multi player gameplay.

Zeus Lee6279d ago

It doesn't kill Halo,it kills Gears of War.

People aren't buying 360s for Halo anymore,Gears of War is THE must play Xbox 360 game of this gen.By releasing a Ps3 game of such higher quality,Sony have effectively given people a strong reason to buy a Ps3 instead. They won't feel like they're 'missing out' a next-gen experience, and this is exactly why Killzone 2 is 2009s most important first party game.

I'm sure Microsoft realize this, which is why they're pumping out Halo this Halo that left and right, hoping to spark new consumer interest in the franchise.

swiftshot936279d ago

I totally agree that gears is the best shooter on 360, but mass effect is the best game on 360. I agree with everything else you said...

DragonWarrior465346279d ago

Killzone kills all 360 exclusives period. Ive never seen a game this good even on pc. The only one that comes close to blowing my mind is Empire Total War,, and thats not in the same genre. Only game that comes close in the genre is COD4. Every other title out besides those two could be discontinued for all I care. Yes even Socom. But I will say that Arma 2 and Operation Flashpoint look like competition. I dont see how any of those two games could be done on the 360 though. Maybe on 2 or 3 disc maybe.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730190d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman186d ago (Edited 186d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

Travesty191d ago

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602191d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty191d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981191d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts191d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno191d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE190d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai191d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex191d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover190d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator191d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia191d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro565d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken564d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown565d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72565d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken564d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya564d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome
