Killzone 2 release weak? Balderdash...

Much had been hyped both good and bad regarding Killzone 2 as we approached the release. The hype surrounding the game reached fever pitch several weeks ago, and is being maintained even now, a few days after the fact.

Yet, there are those claiming that the game has not sold well. Some going so far as to call it a flop. While mindless haters don't deserve recognition, surely not all of these people have ulterior motives.

I think the game will sell 2-3 million easy. It's basically something like the Gears of War of PS3. But you can't argue the fact, that it's not putting up Halo 3 or GTA IV like numbers where people are waiting in lines by the hundreds to get their copy at midnight. That just didn't happen, no need to lie about it.

Halo 3 boosted 360 sales for a month or so, as did Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3. Those games are as big as it gets. Killzone 2 is really more like a new IP, the original was an average game, so it's not like it's a huge franchise that has millions of fans.

Killzone is hopefully making a name for itself, but it's not Halo or GTA status. There just isn't going to be any one game that wins the console wars anymore. That's just not how this gen is turning out.

"Killzone 2 is really more like a new IP, the original was an average game, so it's not like it's a huge franchise that has millions of fans."

Nah, if anything Killzone 2 is at a disadvantage. I bought into, and was disappointed by, the first. I paid little to no attention to #2 until I played the demo. With a new IP, you get to make a first impression. Killzone as a franchise did that years ago, and for a lot of people, it wasn't a good one.

mirroredderorrim6213d ago

The campaign was also the largest of it's kind, for any game.

This game is selling crazy, with no such campaign.

Presentist6212d ago

Real gamers don't care about Sales Numbers.

TruthBTold6213d ago (Edited 6213d ago )

It does make a point. I have seen many articles trying to down play a game saying it has weak sales without giving a number to back up their claim. I purchased KZ2 and I am little on MP games, I enjoy playing SP more, so wasn't sure how I would like the MP of KZ2. After a couple of minutes into the MP I have to say IMO that I have really got hooked on it. The gameplay and the size and structure of each level is what makes them so much fun to play. Even if you are not an expert and get killed a lot you enjoy it and learn and come back and have your vengeance. The SP is fun, something new in each level that just raises the bar on difficulty. The AI is amazing, they can really kill you time after time and you don't even see it coming but that is what makes it fun because you cant get angry at someone or something outsmarting you, its not like a cheat that the AI does, they really do try to avoid your shots and attack you in the best way possible. The game is great and any FPS fan should play it even if they don't have a PS3, go play it at a friends house and see how you enjoy it. Quit all the fanboy cr@p and give recognition when recognition is due.

BTW LBP is on sale at Amazon for 42.00, just ordered mine. I have to get this game since I have only heard great things and my girlfriend really wants to play it. I'm sure 42.00 is a great deal for such a great game that is getting so much add ons.

velaxun6213d ago

how did someone disagree with you?? You are right though, KZ2 is an amazing game, I think I might end up playing it more than CoD, the multiplayer is simply astonishing. I don't see where some people are getting their info, but KZ2 is definitely not a "flop". Completely sold out in my area on the first day, one of my friends still hasn't got it cuz he can't find a copy.

Gun_Senshi6213d ago (Edited 6213d ago )

1.5mil pre orders in europe alone and thats offical

Gamestop is not even world wide to count sales.

TOO PAWNED6213d ago

those were RETAIL preorders, not from gamers. Anyways 1.5 million has been shipped into EU stores, that's all that matters.
Haters should wait for at least NPDs to see how it did in two days that was on market. but no there has to be one or two or 10 anti sony articles.

masterg6213d ago

@TOO PAWNED
There is nothing called a "retail pre-order".

silvacrest6213d ago

exactly, where did the term "retail pre-orders" come from all of a sudden? theres no proff that it even exist but we all know what "customer pre-orders" are besides, since when did retailers pre order games?

funny how this term came up just as killzone 2 gets released......

JasonXE6212d ago (Edited 6212d ago )

there is "no way" Sony knows how many consumers pre-order a game. All they know is the retail stores in Europe order that much. The chart trackers usually have the consumer sale numbers. Just PR talk which was misleading.

Seriously, I think some people just enjoy making crap up and hoping that it comes true so they can more or less go: "See I told you so!"

Anon19746213d ago

Remember all the LittleBigPlanet flop articles that the internet was bombarded with? Now, 3-4 months after launch it sits over 2 million and is still selling 1/2 million a month with no sign of slowing down yet. What does that tell you?

On the 360, less than 5% of games released ever break the 2 million mark and yet here we are, comparing Killzone 2 sales to Halo 3 or GTA4, only 3 full days since launch. It's madness.

kewlkat0076213d ago (Edited 6213d ago )

what about games on the 360 that break 1 million?

For the amount of games in the 360's library, I'm sure there is plenty.

Again, we saw what happened with Resistance 2. Them sales probably slowed to a crawl. I wonder if insomniac is thinking about RFOM 3..

Sibs6213d ago

Right now they better be thinking of a new Ratchet and Clank... that game was fun.

Anon19746212d ago (Edited 6212d ago )

Not really sure what your point is. I didn't mean to set 2 million as some benchmark, it was just an example. So far about 10% of 360 games have broke the 1 million mark, so still one million is a feat few games achieve.

As for Resistance 2, the first game sold over 3.5 million, the second currently sits just shy of 1.5 million after 4 months so yeah..I'm guessing it's a pretty safe bet that a RFOM 3 is in the works. They have to be happy with that. Sales have slowed now as they always do over time. Not really sure what your point was bringing that up.

Yeah, so I really don't know what the point of your post was. You might want to clarify. My point was pretty straight forward, we shouldn't judge any game by a weeks worth of sales.

Robearboy6213d ago

The last two games to receive this much hype were GTA4 and Halo 3, i think what alot of people are doing is trying to compare the estimated sales figures of this game to the sales figures of the other two and when you see 2 - 3 million against 8 million, it can be perceived as a flop, however Sonys bank balance and the 2-3 million owners of the game will tell you something different, its all about spin and perspective

At the end of the day, if the game makes you money and everyone enjoys it, then as we say in england "Jobs a good un"

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX498d ago (Edited 498d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne498d ago (Edited 498d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro498d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken498d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown498d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72498d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken498d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya497d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast498d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood498d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro727d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72727d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_727d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga727d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23727d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000727d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin727d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole727d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix727d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989727d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

727d ago
Michiel1989727d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1031d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1031d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1031d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491031d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381031d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1031d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1031d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381031d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1031d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761031d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM1031d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301031d ago (Edited 1031d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1031d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1031d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1031d ago (Edited 1031d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1031d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1031d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
