Blu-spec CD: Sony's new super CD

If CDs really are on their way out Sony's ready with a replacement, the Blu-spec CD!

First things first, you won't need a new player to play Sony's Blu-spec CDs. The Blu-spec CD website doesn't offer much info other than, "The Blu-spec CD format boasts a new approach to the faithful reproduction of music by utilizing the leading edge blue laser diode technologies optimized for the manufacturing of Blu-ray." The new discs' polycarbonate plastic, optimized for Blu-ray discs is used "to ensure accurate reading of the data."

thats odd. i was just about to say that.

GVON6351d ago

What's the article trying to say? I think the author should go back to making police academy films.

Karum6351d ago

What is the point of this media?

What I get from it is that it's made from the same material as blu-ray discs which should mean it's not easily scratched. Also they mention accurate reading of the data, not sure if that implies better sound quality/data streaming or whatever.

I just have to question the wisdom and/or purpose of this new media considering how huge digital music has become with the likes of iTunes out there and more recently Amazon with their own .mp3 downloads, also play.com in the UK offer the same service.

PirateThom6351d ago

There's still people who have an issue with lossy music. Even CDs are digitally compressed.

Kyur4ThePain6351d ago

I think, just like with movie downloads and Blu-Ray discs, it depends on the audience.
One caters for convenience, while the other caters for quality.
Surely you can see that there is a place for both?

Karum6351d ago

Yeah I can see there being a place for both given that I much prefer a Blu-Ray movie over a download or even a DVD. But within the article it didn't indicate whether or not the sound quality was any better than .mp3 or even the existing CD format.

If it's of a noticably better quality than those formats to the same extent Blu-Ray is noticably better than DVD then I could understadn it perfectly well.

PirateThom6351d ago (Edited 6351d ago )

Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio are both a fair bit better than CD, not enough to warrant the price of them though.

However, if they were to offer albums on the same Blu-ray as album reviews/live shows or whatever, it could be pretty cool.

NaiNaiNai6351d ago

its not just the blue-ray disk alone that makes it better, the laser in it is smaller then DVD so you can store more data. thats why its the same size disk, this blu-spec cd on the other had has the same laser as a standard CD so no more space, and no higher audio quality, so it will be just like your standard CD but 10$ more, and it wont scratch. of course thats 10$ more then a cd with music already on it. about 24.50$ more then another blank.

Standard PCM CD's are not compressed, they are just limited to 2 channels of 16bit 44.1Khz uncompressed audio. The sample rate of 44.1khz was chosen because it is over twice the maximum frequency that the average human ear can detect, and that gives the digital to analog filters enough additional data to reproduce the waveform in a clean manner. It's like anti-aliasing for audio, they give it twice as much data as is needed and thus it reproduces a more accurate analog waveform. The key is that the data from one CD can (in theory) be put on and ripped off an infinite amount of times and the last copy would sound as good as the first. The only issue would be potential equipment audio degeneration. Compressed audio could be recorded to another compressed format; however with each re compression there will be loss in quality and eventually you'll end up with something that sounds like garbage because to much data was loss between the first compression and the last one.

Blu-spec?

Damn Sony, you're so creative..

Jacked the blu from blu ray and added ''spec''.

PirateThom6351d ago

Because they still use the same violet diodes... :-/

DVD and HD DVD

Oh Toshiba, you're so creative.

See how stupid you look now?

Hercules6351d ago (Edited 6351d ago )

i dont think CDs will get taken over..the average ear really cant tell the difference in sound after 128kbps..but my guess is that they add more time on the cd, if not, then Sony is wasting their money instead of marketing the hell out of the ps3 and its games

edit: then thats it..this project should be taken down...its really pointless

NaiNaiNai6351d ago

they said that it would use the same laser, so they really can't add anymore time to it.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle77d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
