Buying two full-priced Blu Rays costs you $50 and buying one YEAR of LIVE costs the same. However, at the end of 5 years, those Blu Rays still only cost you $50 but suddenly you've spent $250 on LIVE. There's a bit of a difference. ;)

Because it's retarded to compare Blu-ray movies to Xbox LIVE. You get nothing with LIVE really, but it's mandatory to play games online. You don't need Blu-ray movies to play games. Furthermore, the money you pay for Blu-ray movies actually gets you something. The money you pay for LIVE gets you what? Nothing, because you can play online for free with no lag on PS3 and PC. Hell, even LIVE is free on PC, and the games are cheaper on PC, and you can do a hell of a lot more things on PC (and PS3) than on 360.

Wow that is the stupidest argument I've ever heard. No one is forced to buy blu-rays. There's this thing called rentals. Yes, some people only watch a movie once so they rent it(I'm actually one of those people). Some people can watch a movie 10 times and still love it. Those people buy blu-rays. When you buy a blu-ray movie you own it. You can watch it again anytime you want and it has resale value. What do you have after 5 years of Live? You got squat and the only thing to look forward to is the next bill.

BTW paying for Live does not get you NXE. Its just a firmware update and guess what Silver members get it too.

To get Netflix streaming you gotta shell out more money a month for a netflix account. Its not a free feature of paying for Live.

As for star ocean 4, Ace combat 6 and final fantasy 13 I can sort of agree with that. I'm sure MS used Live money they collected to secure those games. But paying for Live only gave you the option to buy such games. Its not like MS is giving them away for free to Gold members. I have a silver membership and I can buy those games just the same...

You're comparing a yearly service (LIVE) to a one-time purchase (a Blu Ray disk). You SAY that you'll only watch the disk once, but that's according to YOU. Someone might watch that movie every weekend. Yes, someone might only watch it once, but the point is that they only PAID the price ONE TIME. Can you grasp those words? LIVE is not a one-time purchase.

If you by a Blu Ray, it's yours. You own it. You have the option of watching it as many times or as few times as you want. You can lend it out. You can smash it against the floor.

When you pay for LIVE, you're paying a subscription. When the subscription is gone, it's gone. You can't keep using it. You can't lend it out. It'd done. You have to buy ANOTHER subscription to keep going.

If Blu Ray usage had some sort of subscription fee, then your argument would hold water. As it stands, your circular reasoning only makes you look like a frantic fanboy.

And if you want to play a good PSN game, don't play MGO, which is done on Konami's servers. Go play Resistance 2, Warhawk, or Little Big Planet.

I just got WALL*E on blu ray last week and I have watched it like 5 times already, and I want to keep watching it because it is so good. I don't know anyone who buys a movie to watch it once, thats called renting. If I buy a movie, I plan to watch it many many many times, in some cases, I will end up watching a movie 50 times(The Matrix).

Also if you are defending paying for LIVE, then if Walmart started charging $50 for having the privilege to shop there(you can't get in otherwise) then you would have not problems with that right?

yea... they didn't realize it by making the first console with an included hard drive and making it a standard feature on most consoles.

They didn't include it in the 360 in box because they wanted to keep costs down because it was the biggest reason the original xbox cost so much to produce, and likewise made their gaming division originally unprofitable.

Sibs that limit only applies to XBLA titles. I can download Halo Combat Evolved from XBL and that clocks 4.8 GB.

Until the majority of people get blazing fast download speeds, a 25 gig game will take way to long to download. I have an 8 mb per second connection that shows at about 7 mb to 8 mb on speedtest.net. When I download actualy things off the internet if it is actualy 2 mb per second that is rare. So think about it. 2mb per second, and remember I have what in america is considered well above average broadband service, that would take forever to download a 20-25 gig game, so lets see how many sony sells, before we trumpet the technology. My logic is sound, so make up as many lies as you want, but you will know the truth deep down.

You dont get it. Nintendo had no choice but to go the wii way. they were not going to compete in the HD gaming area, and they could not go with a gamecube style console, they just could not. If the wii flopped then the result would have been similar to what would have happened with a traditional console. Because no HD, no new IPs worth playing, it would have been a failure. The wii is a success, but not a great risk. Nothing to lose, everything to win

Financially speaking if this didnt work it could have been the death knell for nintendo as we know it. They backed this system like nothing we had seen since the snes. Making hard drives a fixture in consoles, bringing online gameplay to a standard, allowing user created games to sell on their system with little moderation, being the first console to allow PC-console connectivity, and being the first console to be able to stream and download HD and SD television and movies really isn't anything important at all.

You take microsoft horribly for granted. Xbox Live is the reason that PSN exists. It's the reason you can download games and movies on PSN. It's the reason many of the games you play on a console are online.

Competition is good. Hopefully next gen, the PS3 will be the reason all the consoles switch to allowing laptop hard drives with simple switch outs and an hd format standard.

Sony and MS took no risk they simply enhanced what they previously had with better graphics, memory, online services etc.

Nintendo were the ones who took gaming in a different way. Remember unlike MS and Sony, gaming is all nintendo know and if this risk didn't pay off then they were in serious trouble. Thankfully the wii has turned out to be a huge success and by far the fastest selling console of all time.

i'll admit nintendo did take a risk with the wii (how could anyone no it would sell this well) but they didnt push anything new apart from motion controls and even that isnt really new, take that away and you have got a gamecube with wifi

but the future of the ps3 did not rest on it. If the motion aspect 'failed' for nintendo then the whole point of the system is ruing as it looses its unique selling point.

Sony played it safe with the console - the way you play it is the same as ever. Blu ray isn't imperative to the function of the console as even if the format failed in the mainstream it would still be used for the ps3.

Blu-Ray was easily the biggest risk, and the future of the PS3 rested in it almost completely for the first year. The PS3 was the cheapest blu-ray player for it's first year, and a lot of people bought it just for that.

Most importantly, the future of sony itself rested heavily on blu-ray. A failed format leading to a failed console would have been devastating to it's investors, especially with the amount of other competitors delivering pretty solid electronics now.

What? nothing, the gamecube was a failure, they did not choose the wii, they had no choice. Sony in the other hand was coming in as the previous king of gaming, and the Blue Ray + Cell chip cost them a lot of criticism and this was a very risky approach. If the PS3 was not adopted, Blue Ray could have flopped, and all the money they put on the PS3 would have make them huge losers. That is what risk is about, the risk to lose your position as the premier gaming brand, the PS brand was at risk, and that is a lot to lose.
Nintendo were desperate, nowhere to go but with something not too expensive (unlike Sony) and totally different = Wii.
Remember, Wii was not an option, it was the only way.
Sony had options, but they choose the road less traveled and put the PS brand to the test, really risky.

Do you know how risky it is to get gamers to try something different, its damn near impossible. If the "casual audience" did not flock to the wii in the manner in which they did, THEN they have another gamecube on their hands. No matter how you word it, a console flopping is not going to bring about good things. Nintendo could not afford another gamecube-esque generation. That is unless we wanted to see them make handheld systems exclusively.

DD also kills any 'after value' a game may have, something I don't think people are going to want to lose. Just look at the used game business GameStop does. It would also hurt publishers and devs ability to sell premium editions, with the little extras a lot of people like. I don't see DD becoming the primary distribution method anytime soon.
