S-E seems to have a much more western-focused aim this time around. Just watching the FFXIII trailer from the PS Store shows that. Lots of guns and the gritty, sterile environment of an FPS. Not to mention, not exactly a lot of colour variation in the environs I saw. Mostly brown, grey, and lots of beige. Also, S-E has yet to release a single PS3 game 2+ years into it's lifespan, yet the 360 is enjoying at least 2-3 of them at present. I realize that JRPGs take time to make and the 360 launched a year ahead of the PS3. That being said, FF13 was supposedly being made at least 1.5 years before the PS3 launched. Now FFXIII is being back in North America until the western release of the 360 version seems to show the going trend. But considering that most of their games haven't gotten more than an average score on the 360 shows the originality in their titles. On PS2 some of their games were golden, FFXII is one shining example of this. I sincerely hope they give the Japanese-based PS3 it's due, and not ignore it sheerly based on western interest. S-E isn't the developer that Squaresoft used to be. S-E is a corporation that seems to be going for the most sales, not for the best RPGs that they used to be known for.

its obvious microsoft is paying as stated above gil under the table for exclusive games but they never sell that well on the 360 so seems rather pointless of square enix to do that at least to me

The ignorance to this statement is astounding. The game was developed on a multiplatform game engine that supports both systems. Square/Enix already said this would not cause a delay. On average it takes Square close to a year to translate and localize FF games for North America and even longer for Europe. During this time a team will work on the port to 360.

Squeenix, being the mere shadow of their former selves, needs money. Microsoft has money. I don't see the secret or surprise.

They no longer have the big names running things or the dream teams that were creating the games we've come to know and love...

Wada or whoever else helps make the decisions are all focused not on Quality but on quantity of games. Back in the day they'd be able to release 4 games and be able to sell 20mil games. Now they release 10 different games and only sell a total of 8mil.

just about every game since S-E was formed has been a spin-off of an earlier game, there are very few original titles or any that are near AAA status.

The days of FFVII I'm afraid are over...the only way I can see them redeeming themselves is if they remake FFVII, or if FFXIII and VsXIII are as amazing as they push them to be.

Ugh FF Dissadia and FF Crisis Core, Two PSP titles have trounced both Xbox 360 exclusives. FF Dissadia (japan only) outsold both The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery worldwide combined.

In December, Final Fantasy 13 will release exclusivly on the PS3 in Japan. I think the sales at that time will determine who Square Enix becomes more looyal to... My Guess the Wii, DS, PSP...

Strange thing is that I get the feeling that they don't put that much effort in the xbox360 games. Since this is the second title for the xbox 360.

Though in a more positive light maybe it really is that more easy to develop for the xbox 360.

really who does? My interest in a JRPG=zero. For some reason I don't think of xbox and JRPG together. How about M$ focus on more hardcore western games. The xbox brand and the PS brand has switched places this gen. The 360 is becoming gay (weak) more and more each day.

I have yet to see why there are so many rpgs on the 360 on this page.

They build the 4 or 5 games on the 360 architecture because the PS3 was not released and RPG's take a lot of time to make.

If they are "lovers" the PS3 will continued to be shunned by SE and we will know where they stand or the mulitplatform SE will emerge after Star Ocean 4.

All I have to say is that sony should have focused more on a games console instead of a media hub. True that is a very cool capability, but focus on what counts. Don't shaft your gamers because you wanted to have blu-ray be the next format. Go back to the days of ps1 and ps2 where it was about the GAMES.

That being said, MS funds most of Development costs and co-create/fund the engine they are using and fund the marketing, how much money is SE making?

Sins of a Solar Empire needed to sell about a 100,000 copies to break even. They sold over 300,000. Remind you this is a pc game with no copy protection on it.

Now let's jump back on track. With all the funding SE only needs to sell maybe 10,000 games to break even. So they are making a lot of profit.

It doesn't matter how much money you make. It matters on how much profitability you generate. What's the point in making 10 billion dollars when your bills run you 20 billion, even 10 billion. In this global economy crisis, you take the safe route, still get your games out and make some money in the process. Take the risks when the economy isn't poo-fodder.

Is it just me or did square enix's games start to suck since they put their games on 360. I'm not a fanboy or anything, I just noticed that on the PS1&2, I enjoyed Square's games more and their titles tend to score higher. The move to 360 produced a lot of half assed feeling rpgs. Although I thought some were cool like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, It just wasn't as good as the games they used to produce on Sony's console. It kinda reminds me of when Rare moved to Microsoft. Maybe it's some sort of curse. I just hope Final Fantasy kicks major arse.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
