Edge: Left 4 Dead: An Autopsy

NGai Croal: "By the time you read this column, 2008 will be receding into memory.

Nevertheless, I wanted to cap off a remarkable year in gaming with a closer look at the co-op zombie apocalypse shooter Left 4 Dead. Valve's attention to detail and high levels of polish are well known, but after weeks of entertainment, I was still trying to tease apart on a fundamental level 'How'd they do that?' How did Valve take two tastes that taste great – survival horror and co-op – and make them taste great together? Here's what I came up with."

Spot on. Left 4 Dead is a masterpiece and major co-op fun on the 360.

peeps6296d ago

well and pc :p prob more so tbh with mods etc

Man_of_the_year6296d ago

Na - i have played them both and still feel the 360 version is better.

thor6297d ago

Lol these guys really are fanboys.

"Attention to detail and polish"?? Where's the detail and polish in L4D compared to most games on the market? It's sub-par in terms of those things.

Survival Horror?!?!?!? What's horror about L4D? Zombies? Isn't horror meant to be scary and not cheesey?

Fishy Fingers6296d ago

Not sure what you have against the game but the majority of those who played it (myself included) absolutely loved it. It was just good old fashioned fun.

Elvfam5116296d ago (Edited 6296d ago )

there isn't anything that's scary though but I agree it's just plain old good fun

Big Frank6296d ago

Fishy fingers his problem is that it's not on the PS3, plain and simple.

butterfinger6296d ago

as most "survival horror" games. The special zombies (esp. the witch) were pretty startling the first couple times playing, and the survival aspect was definitely there. Most people that hate on the game haven't really given it a chance. Left 4 Dead was BY FAR one of my most FUN games of 2008. It wasn't necessarily GOTY material to me (too short, should've been $49.99 on 360 not $59.99), but I definitely had a blast playing co-op with 3 of my friends. I'll definitely buy it again on the PS3 (if it comes out) so I can play with my PS3-only friends.

thor6296d ago

Sigh

I don't care for the game myself

BUT you guys who found it FUN can't deny that what they're saying about "attention to detail and polish" is BS. So is the survival horror bit.

All I ever hear is that it's fun, well if you enjoy it, fine, but don't go shouting from the rooftops about how the attention to detail is so great when it's NOT! All it is is good old-fashioned shooting fun. Nothing revolutionary.

Silellak6296d ago

Can you explain why it DOESN'T have polish or attention to detail?

Polish - there are very few bugs. Of course it has some - any software ever made does - but for the most part it is an incredibly polished experience. What they have there, works well. Which is what polished MEANS. I'd expect no different from Valve.

Attention to detail - this harder to "prove" one way or the other, but I will say the world is incredibly immersive. Notice the scribbles on the wall from others survivors in the safe room, the way the AI director modifies things JUST RIGHT to make the experience as dramatic as possible, the incredibly well-done zombie animations. It feels like being in a zombie movie, which no other game - even my personal favorite of Dead Rising - has ever really captured properly.

It IS revolutionary because it is the first solid co-op survival horror - and it IS survival horror, whether or not you want to admit it. Find me another game I can play with 3 other people and feel like I've been dropped in the middle of a zombie apocalypse with them, where my only goal is *survival*.

Where does the horror come from?

- When the Horde starts coming after you, for whatever reason
- Lagging behind the group and being grabbed by a Smoker or pounced by a Hunter
- Hearing the musical cues of a Witch being nearby and just waiting til one of your team is inevitably clumsy enough to startle her
- Hearing the musical cues for the Tank and thinking HOLY CRAP IT'S COMING

thor6296d ago

Lack of attention to detail in L4D
----------------------------- -----

Graphics - every facet. From character models to animation to camera angles (e.g. when grabbed by a smoker) to textures it's all got less attention to detail than most games.
Shooting mechanics - last-gen. Doesn't feel like much of an improvement from Half-life 2. Really quite disappointing. Weapons are basic and generic.
Story - There is none. Whilst the half-life series has quite a good backstory and some good in-game storytelling, L4D's story is non-existent. No attention to detail there - or even to more general things.
Voice acting - For survival horror, if you want it to be convincing, you have to hire good voice actors. Zoe saying "I'm gonna die!!" in the cheesiest way possible is not good.
Immersion - The whole presentation of it - the arcade-style co-op zombie shoot-em-up where you can see your teammates through walls, the camera clips through scenery, the animations are poor and all the zombies look the same - ruins any kind of immersion. Hardly "attention to detail".

I agree that in some ways the balance has been thought about and there are little touches here and there - but it's by no means any better than most games in terms of attention to detail.

And I wish people would stop raving about the AI director. We've had randomly spawning enemies for aeons. It just has a couple of simple things like

if time_spent_in_one_section > 2 minutes:
release_the_zombie_horde

if total_health_lost < 100:
number_of_zombies_released+=1 0

and suddenly everybody's raving about it.

edgeofblade6296d ago

Thor doesn't get it. And that's fine. I disagree with the "detail" claim, but it's certainly polished.

It's not polished from a graphics perspective, but the gameplay is exceptionally well polished. The AI director keeps the pressure on very well, and because those algorithms are polished, the gameplay resulting becomes polished.

majorsuave6296d ago

Thor: "Lol these guys really are fanboys."

And you're not?
You stomp on the 1st post to bash a game you haven't even played, this is sad, maybe you should try and get laid instead of living inside the internet.

Gish6296d ago

I picked up L4D on steam over the weekend ($25 is too good to pass up). I havent been drawn into it yet as much as I have read other people have been. Although I have only gone through one chapter so far.

Fishy Fingers6296d ago

Much more enjoyable when played cooperatively.

Gish6296d ago

I will need to play it cooperatively. I also dont have friends that play on steam, so I am sure it takes fun out of it playing with strangers. Hell I dont have many Xbox Live friends either. PSN is the only one that I have built up some good people to play with. Anyone add me up if your on those. Live:Neszer PSN:Nesz

Scelestus6296d ago

There's nothing "great" about L4D, Valve or Edge. L4D is not a survival horror title. At best it's a HL2 mod. Gabe Newell is a fanboy as he's made clear many times since he failed to port Half Life to the PS2. Edge is proving more and more that they harbor a race hatred towards anything Japanese.

Silellak6296d ago

In other words, you're made because it's not on the PS3.

Got it.

edgeofblade6296d ago

All you have accomplished is revealing your bias. Clearly you see the world through Sony-branded lenses.

You see that bubble floating away from you in to the upper atmosphere, never to return? That used to be your bubble.

Scelestus6296d ago

Try attacking my argument instead of my person. There is plenty of evidence to support my claims, and none to support yours. Don't pretend to know me.

evrfighter6296d ago

clearly raging over edge magazine kz2 score and gabe newell's prior comments on ps3. How about you get over it and play the damn game before you comment on it and leave the game politics out of it.

Scelestus6296d ago

I played the game, and yes it's a fun multiplayer game, but I don't see how it couldn't have been a HL2 mod. The engine hasn't improved much at all. In fact FakeFactory's Cinematic Mod for HL2 looks BETTER than their own "latest version" of Source. Time to let go of that Quake1 source code.

nycredude6296d ago (Edited 6296d ago )

Why do you guys have to bring up the Ps3. What makes you think just because someone doesn't think this game is anything special doesn't mean they don't have a Ps3.

You also have to be honest and just admit that this game is just a fun arcady zombie shoot em up much in like many of the ones you use to see in the arcades. This isn't survival horror as we know it.

Also the graphics are pretty much a bit better than halflife 2, but halflife 2 had an excellent back story where as this game has non whatsoever.

Leathersoup6296d ago

You say, "Try attacking my argument instead of my person.", but your entire argument was an attack on someone's person. Don't be a hypocrite.

peeps6296d ago

L4D never really bothered me for release, mainly because non of my mates were getting it and the only real reason is for the co-op but at the weekend when i saw it on steam for £13.49 i had to get it and so far very pleased. I imagine it could get boring after a while given that theres only the 4 stages, however they are large and each time you get zombies coming from different areas.

Not many games now adays are 'scary' so i don't see the argument there, i mean resi5 is a 'survivial horror' and i wouldn't say thats scary. L4D can be more tense than scary i guess like when u get vomitted on - it's really hard to see anything and you can just hear the mob of zombies all going for you and only you and then before you know it your swamped and gotta be relying on ur team-nmates for help.

All in all a great purchase for £14 so far :D Don't hate on a game if you don't own it yourself...

butterfinger6296d ago

I don't see how anyone could be unhappy:) Make sure to play online or with some friends, because that is how the game is meant to be played.

OG Left 4 Dead Creator Announces He's Working On A New Multiplayer Shooter

Following Left 4 Dead's undying legacy, the developer of the game shares that a new likewise project is in the works.

ZycoFox257d ago

L4D had potential to be so much more. The issue was that the release of the second game just one year after the first added a decent amount of content which was much needed, then there was nothing except for a few small content updates spread far between.

This is one of the only games I can think of that benefits from a yearly release, or at least a yearly DLC so it doesn't split the player base.

The games just got too samey and lack content.. it's a shame they didn't keep up the pace, I know you can download new maps but it doesn't change the overall game or add new enemies etc.

-Foxtrot256d ago

Regardless of what Valve officially said they didn’t need to do a sequel that fast, things could have easily been added to the original overtime and the sad thing is the characters and atmosphere of the original was better than the sequel. I mean we went from the dark, grim city streets to the sunny south where we are hitting massive menacing tanks with frying pans.

I honestly believe Valve killed it because it was a Turtle Rock game at its core and Valve wanted it to be known as an Valve only IP moving forward

They even brought back the original survivors just to kill one of them off (even though in the original they were heading North to Canada)

JEECE256d ago

Lol L4D2 came out in 2009, and you are saying it should have been a 2020s type live service game. It's just a great game, it doesn't need battle passes and skins.

This attitude is why devs are afraid to make any multiplayer game that isn't a live service.

Jingsing255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

Also in these current economic times live services is just a no go when people are being more frugal with their purchasing power. I don't do any subscription services anymore which means I can't do multiplayer on a console even if I wanted too. Something the console manufacturers should think about if they want to get players to even try their online stuff.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies749d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken749d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69749d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker749d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo749d ago (Edited 749d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69749d ago (Edited 749d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos749d ago (Edited 749d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt749d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken749d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein787d ago (Edited 787d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville786d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi786d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein786d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos786d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein785d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

ZycoFox786d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead786d ago (Edited 786d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK786d ago (Edited 786d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long786d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger88787d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

gold_drake786d ago

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos786d ago (Edited 786d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts786d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername786d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai786d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long786d ago (Edited 786d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.
