Killzone 2 hype time. GL Killzone 1 review

2004 feels like a long, long time ago. I failed to finish Killzone when I first picked it up for the PS2. I got slightly stuck midway through the game and (after about ten tries) kind of putting it on hold. Fast forward four years and I've (finally) revisited the game, playing it through my PS3 in order to be on top of what went on back then, before the sequel hits. What did I make of Guerilla Games original tale of big blokes, big guns and big red eyes? Read on to find out.

Almost thought this was the score for the second one. This is a KZ1 Review.

Max Power6311d ago

the author, actually, did a very good job with this review. just makes me wish i didn't leave my copy at my parents house:(

HannahBanana6311d ago

Regardless of what the actual review score is it is great to see people realizing what a fantastic game Killzone PS2 is and why it sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

Anyone wondering where all the rage and fear over Killzone 2 on the PS3 came from just needs to play the original and then look back at the disgusting garbage the Xbox/Halo fanboys who were knocking each other over in their rush to trash the game in articles and "reviews".

BattleAxe6311d ago

I played Killzone 1 online last week, and it was brutal. Everyone seems to find grenade launchers, and thats all they use.

I also played through the single player campaign last week for the 2nd time ever, and thats where I think the first Killzone was great.

darthv726311d ago

got it for $10 at gamestop. I was playing it last night after another playthru of the kz2 demo. Actually...I was just messing around with the demo and started shooting my squad mates. There are some that just wont die no matter if I knife them, try to blow them up with a grenade/rocket launcher or simply shooting them point blank. Oh well that is a story for another day.

So like i said I just picked up kz1 and man I can't play it. Oh it has such a strange frame rate that makes me a little queezy. I played as templar in the first couple of levels. One thing that really stood out (aside from the graphical popin and breaking) was the audio of the helgans screaming in the background.

I might just have to play through the whole thing (if I dont get sick from the motion) to see the later level. HALO killer it definately is NOT (thanks for that title...media). I would say it is probably a solid 7 after playing the first few levels which isnt fair considering there may be better ones ahead (i certainly expect so).

I was playing it on my ps3 and tried to set it up for widescreen but it wouldnt look right on my tv through the ps3 but if i put it in the ps2 at widescreen it looked fine (?????). I tried the online only to have the game say there was no network profile on my system.

Is it possible to play ps2 network games through the ps3? Would I need to install the network software for ps2 on the ps3?

darthv726311d ago

Disagrees...for what?

Trying to shoot my squadmates in the kz2 demo? I am sure we have all tried it to see if we could.

Feeling sick while playing it? I only had that happen one other time and it was the first halo game in motion. Could have been to much beer beforehand and the framerate caused me to feel a bit funny inside.

Can't get widescreen to work right with the ps3 (ps2 mode) on my samsung plasma? I can get god of war to look good widescrees (in progressive no less) but cant get this game. If played in widescreen on a real ps2 it is fine.

Can't get the network function to work for this game? It is the first network capable ps2 game I have tried in my ps3. If you can get it to work please share.

Saying this game is NOT a halo killer? Well....it isnt. The media gave it that tagline and I am just stating the obvious that it isnt (graphically, audio and storywise).

Sorry to the kz1 fans out there but I am more interested in getting the widescreen and network features to work through my ps3 than have to hook back up my ps2.

**On a side note. It would be great if GG came out with a special patch for kz1 so users wanting to play it on a ps3 could have smoothed out gfx and better textures (slightly, they dont have to go all out). If valve can make a graphical facelift for the original halflife (ala blushift) and konami can take the ps1 metal gear solid and up the res and textures without really changing anything else. I am sure GG could as well for the ps3 gamers wanting to play the original in better than original mode.

Just a thought.

BattleAxe6311d ago

If you have any Socom game or Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm, they allow you to set up your network configuration for any PS2 game. You have to put your network configuration on the memory card that you are saving your Killzone 1 information on to.

As for the wide screen aspect of things, you can set you PS3 up to show your PS2 games in widescreen. However, usually there will be a black strip on both sides of the picture. On my 42" widescreen there about an inch on both sides. No big deal.

Killzone 1 becomes alot more interesting when you know where it fits into the full story and timeline. Go to www.killzone.com and read the timeline, its really interesting.

BattleAxe6311d ago

Here is the link that shows the timeline. It talks about how the Helgast came to be ect. Check out the different eras but start from the beginning. Alot of people don't know where the helgast came from ;)

9/10 is an accurate review for the game.

If it had been the only big game on the Xbox the scores would have been 9.5-10/10.

The small set of voice clips is repetative. Sometime whene the screen is filled with smoke the framerate drops.

Other than that the game is incredible. The weapon handling is incredibly realistic. The graphics are incredible. The AI is some of the best from last gen. The multiple and different types characters adds a lot of replay value to the single player.

It is cool to see how amazing the original Killzone is and how disgusting the Xbox/Halo fanboy trashing of this game was and how well Sony learned their lesson from last gen and totally derailed the similar attempts to trash Killzone 2 this gen.

Dimly6311d ago

I would give it an 8/10 for the pure fact that every level feels the same and the lack of weapon diversity and enemy design.

redsquad6311d ago

I can understand why the second two may be considered issues (though not by me), but I thought the levels were very diverse.
Trench warfare, urban combat, rainswept beaches & docks, jungle combat, icy wastelands and ultimately a space station... All felt very different to me.

MegaMohsi6311d ago

wow his KZ1 review score is higher than Edge's KZ2 score.

6311d ago
Sitdown6311d ago (Edited 6311d ago )

what pointing out that fact does. I mean we are talking about different generation, different expectations, and of course different reviewers...just to name a few.

Anyhow....does anybody know if their will be a multi-player demo available after launch?

L-a-i-n6311d ago

Edge just has issues with number scores. They do a great review they just lack the ability to give the game a number. How can you talk up a game so much and give it a 7. Dont make any since at all. They have done it with many many reviews.

Still not bad, and it was a fun game.

Helldivers 2 sparked renewed interest in Killzone. Do we deserve it?

Now, with most games these days, live service included, comes the inclusion of microtransactions. In Helldiver 2's case, these come in the form of Warbonds and the superstore. Some of them were a hit, others were a miss. But one of the superstore items that have sparked interest is the Killzone set. While this is nice, this would have much better served as a warbond. Putting it in the superstore comes off as greedy, but that's an issue for another video. More to the point, the Killzone franchise fanbase had taken note, and it sparked renewed interest in wanting the series to be revived.

lol well, as fans we'd naturally say that (yes myself included).

But given some of the complaints the series garnered over the years when it was available is why we asked it it was deserved

RaiderNation420d ago

I think it does. A complete reboot would be ideal with a better story and main protagonist. I love the asthetic of the Killzone universe, along with the premise of Earth warring with another planet of humanoid beings, and Earth possibly being the antagonists. They just need to develop a good main protagonist and have better writing. A Killzone reboot in the latest version of the Decima engine would be incredible.

Abear21420d ago

If it makes dollars it makes sense, that’s how these decisions are made.

Clearly Sony or whoever makes this decision isn’t convinced Killzone would sell enough to support the cost of development. They also have a hit with Horizon that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and prints money.

JunonZanon420d ago

A trilogy remaster with KZ2 MP would be a good start

Cacabunga420d ago

With Move and sharpshooter support? I can dream!

lodossrage420d ago

considering the time we live in, it would more than likely get a VR option to replace the move support

Jingsing420d ago

Not unless they come up with some amazing marketing campaign otherwise it will just perform as bad as Halo these days.

Killzone composer would love a remaster trilogy, “don’t know if a new game” would be successful

Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn composer Joris de Man would like PlayStation to make a remaster trilogy, but not a new game.

Id like a remaster trilogy and the ps vita version remastered as well. It should also have killzone 2 multiplayer

Cacabunga426d ago

Yes make them start with KZ2 multiplayer remake as standalone!! I would play the carp out of it.

INMATEofARKHAM426d ago

Knowing Sony and how the Uncharted remasters shipped without their MP components they'll likely do the same with Killzone.

Outside_ofthe_Box425d ago

Then there's no point in remastering it imo. KZ2's MP was the best thing about Killzone.

Knightofelemia426d ago

I'd day one a remaster trilogy I'd even day one a remaster trilogy or Resistance as well.

GamingManiac424d ago

Same! But with KZ2 and R2 multiplayer!

JEECE426d ago

I'm glad they stopped making Killzone before people started saying "mid," so I am spared seeing all the braindead "Killzone is actually mid" takes that people inevitably would have offered up in lieu of legitimate analysis.

INMATEofARKHAM426d ago

They were mid, tbh. Just the best Sony put out in the 1st person/exclusive department.

RedDeadLB425d ago

I don't know about that. They weren't the greatest shooters out there, sure, but nothing even came close to the atmosphere of 2 and 3. The feeling of weight, the animations, the style, the multiplayer and the trophies made it one hell of a game. All shooters are in essence point and shoot, but few make you feel the way Killzone made you feel while doing it.

senorfartcushion425d ago

They will cast a woman on one of the lead roles, just like how they did it in the past, but toda's nerds will find an excuse to be angry about it.

ibrake4naps426d ago

It should be a crime that they didn't put out a version of part 2 that supports their VR headset. A no-brainer...

I would really like a remastered killzone trilogy on ps5. I wouldn't mind even just a killzone 2 remake or remastered with multiplayer but I think it's time for sony to revisit the franchise and do something big.

isarai521d ago

Id love that, with 120fos modes Augh😩

Cacabunga520d ago

KZ2 was and still is masterclass.
KZ3 was great too but KZ2 had a better multi.
SF was not as great but solid game still.

We just want KZ2 remake!

Becuzisaid520d ago

@cacabunga
Don't leave out that Vita game (Mercenaries?). That game was phenomenal. I rank it between KZ2 and 3.

Army_of_Darkness520d ago

Acknowledging the current trends of Sony, I would say if they were to make a new Killzone, they would probably remake it into WokeZone😂

Knushwood Butt520d ago

The isometric game on PSP was a blast too. Had a really solid feel to it. Hope that gets a release on PS Plus Premium.

Begging for remastered games is just so lame... Killzone was mid. Nothing more. Make new stuff.

TriniOutsider519d ago

They're making new stuff...

FPS_D3TH519d ago

lol yeah about all that new stuff….

chicken_in_the_corn521d ago

It needs a new game. Better yet, a new stand alone trilogy.

robtion520d ago

Killzone 2 was INSANE when it came out. The look/graphics were so far ahead of everything else at the time and the story and gameplay were top tier. It still looks better than a lot of games that release now.
