You Blew It, Netflix

Rick Aristotle Munarriz writes,

"Well played, Blockbuster.

The DVD retailer will begin offering video game rentals by mail this year. It will launch a pilot program with select Total Access subscribers during the second quarter, with plans to roll it out nationally later this year.

I've been bellyaching over Netflix's refusal to throw its hat into the GameFly ring for years.

No one needs to tell me that renting video games is an iffy business. Games cost way more than DVDs. They also age quicker. A company can rent a copy of The Godfather on DVD for as long as the platform is relevant. You can't squeeze more than a few months of use out of a sports franchise title with annual installments."

Hmmmm. The rumors of a Sony/Blockbuster deal to stream movies on the PS3 makes this veeery interesting.

Stream movies + rent Blu Ray + rent video games = a great deal.

Pennywise6318d ago

might have to reactivate my account when this happens!

Microsoft Xbox 3606318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

The PS3 will soon have it all.

RAGE6318d ago

If Blockbuster doesn't go under first.

likedamaster6318d ago

I hear you. I've stopped going to blockbuster for months now ever since Walmart got that redbox thing going, renting out DVDs for 1 dollar(24 hour rental). I just rent 'em and copy 'em, then watch 'em whenever I want.

Th3 Chr0nic6318d ago

yea it is good to hear they are going to support games by mail but umm it still blockbuster and blockbuster is like the gamestop of the movie world. blockbuster= epic fail.

ThatCanadianGuy6318d ago

How so? I've been going to blockbuster for 7-8 years.Never had any problems.

thats_just_prime6318d ago

Well blockbuster is sadly the best movie/game rental place there is. I use to like hollywood better till they jack up the price of game rental to like 10 dollars and drop there monthly rental program

Th3 Chr0nic6318d ago

remember when they had that whole "no late fees" deal a few years ago.
well they advertised that hardcore but hardly any of their stores in my area participated in it but they did nothing to tell people they werent, so i ended up with tons of late fees. never got a note reminding me to return my overdue items or anything like they would usually do....kinda obvious they didnt care they were scamming people. and no i dont care if its in the fine print, thats just another way for them to screw ppl and cover their a$$es. discs are always scratched to hell and they just put them back on the shelf even if they know about it. cant get anyone to help in the store and there have been numerous times when i have found a movie i wanted to rent on the shelf and when i go to the counter to ask for it they say it cant be found and must not be available anymore but they continue to leave the case on the shelf. and the prices are a bit high for a rental. i have a better idea than netflix, how about one of those rental machines where u get the disc from the vending unit and return the sameway with no people involved other than the guy that loads and unloads the machine.

NegativeCreepWA6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

I couldn't agree more. Blockbuster tried sending me to collections for a five dollar late fee.

TOSgamer6318d ago

Sorry your Blockbuster sucks. But mine is pretty good. They call the day before a game is due. The staff is relatively friendly and they have a decent amount of games in stock. This is a good move by Blockbuster to move into video games and I hope it works out for them. I'd hate to loose my local Blockbuster. If they decide to really start focusing on game sales they could also be a threat to Gamestop. I mean its cool that you can go there get a psn card or xbox live card or extra controller til 12am. Great for late night gaming needs.

ActionBastard6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

Sorry, but for me, Blockbuster is the muthaclucking shiznit-tizzle. Yes, I said it. I live 4 miles from a BB store and have been getting movies online since their service started. I have the Total Access package, 3 movies out for $19.99 and get 2 free rentals in-store (that I use for games) and unlimited in-store exchanges. On top of that, any movie I rent from a store with one of my mailers is bound by my total access agreement. Meaning: no due date, no late fees. That little program is going nationwide in the upcoming months, but I have it now for being a "loyal subscriber" :)

And the ifs begin...

IF Blockbuster online offered streaming of older movies ala Netflix for paying subscribers, it would (IMHO) DESTROY it. Having all the flexibility of Blockbuster's service would be staggering. Couple that with games and it just seems like Ali vs. Foreman in my mind.

ThatOneGuyThere6318d ago (Edited 6318d ago )

got a class action law suit, and lost. They never have late fees anymore. The only late fee you can get at blockbuster is if you have a movie for an extra week(you are 1 week late), they charge your credit card the price of the movie, and a small 1.25$ restock fee, when you bring the movie back, they refund all but the restock fee.

if this is true this will be awsome i always said netflix would be the greatest service if they did video games as well!

Godmars2906318d ago

So hard is it for them to wait and see what Blockbuster does and i-up them?

It could just be easier to combine them now, but there's sure to be additional rental fees.

No Gamefly is a privately owned company. Netflix is a publicly traded company.

"Be creative 99% of the time" – Glen Schofield on how creativity can help fix AAA industry woes

The Callisto Protocol director thinks the solution involves the right people, the right timing, and perhaps a little bit of AI

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman43d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
