EB defends second-hand sales

Theage: The games industry might have enjoyed record sales of nearly $2 billion in Australia last year, but there is growing concern from developers and publishers around the world about the rising trade in second-hand games.

Sales of trade-ins are very lucrative for gaming retailers, who typically make a much bigger margin than when selling new titles, but developers and publishers miss out on a piece of the action.

When asked why EB Games devotes such significant shelf space in their stores to
second-hand games, Ms McGrath says they are "a good deal for customers and represent a point of difference for EB Games".

EB games or Gamestop is more favorable to go to in this time of a economic crisis i think i would be much easier if i dont have a full 60 dollars to buy a used game which would sell for maybe 54 dollars minus my game store credit and my 10% off o and additional 10% towards your game trade in values.

No doubt that buying 2nd hand games is a good deal for the customer, but selling by selling old games is not. I got about $20 for Fallout 3 and Saints Row (PS3) in my local Blocbuster. Before the economic crisis they payed considerably more.. And that can have some negative effects because it makes people keep their old games.. And wait for the retailers to drop prices instead.

HOWEVER, they only typically give you a good tradein on games that are about 6 months old. Other than that, you get teh shaft and practically pennies for your year old games.

I think it's good they're trying to explain themselves, but they're not explaining other aspects, such as the actual value of the typical trade in. Another thing is that they are profiting in cash when someone goes to buy a used game with cash, by a lot because people who did use credit know that using that credit to get old games is lost money to them.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
