Game Informer: Killzone 2 Review

Killzone 2 is the best-looking shooter on the PS3, which puts it in the running for best looking shooter ever. Even better, the game doesn't fall back on its visual splendor, but offers tense, polished gunplay that sets it beside the other great console combat games. The campaign is a machismo-laden chest thumper, with a story that exists largely to move the character from one impressive locale to the next. A frequently intense but occasionally frustrating multiplayer component fleshes out the experience. With the exception of its stunning graphics, Killzone 2 doesn't do a whole lot that you haven't seen before in other titles. But what it does do, it does with aplomb.

Killzone 2 is a fantastic addition to the PS3 catalogue. It makes good on the promise of its original unveiling nearly four years ago through unceasing action and breathtaking visual fidelity. It doesn't change our level of expectation for all first-person shooters, but it does give us all a good reason to keep playing them.

Can't even get a 9. And this is supposed to be a system seller? LOL

redsquad6312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

Guess your fanboy blindfold made you miss those many '9' scores it got then?
Still a great score, still a great game - You can't change that now no matter how much you wish you could.

TheOutsider6312d ago

ISN'T THAT YOUR I.Q SCORE?????

pswi606312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

can anyone tell me how GameInformant can tell between an 8.75 and a 9?

Just wondering...

I mean, maybe reviewers can start using more decimal places seeing as how these reviewers are getting so accurate with their numbers

"we give it an 8.754916667333" lmfao

I`m pretty sure the MP is gonna cause a new addiction called.....Killzoism. I`m gonna suffer from Killzoism.

Plus 8.75 is a great score, considering it`s NOT multiplatform.

madmonkey06312d ago

i think this might see alot of the COD4 players or r2 players on it. and it will have a masive longevity. assuming there are no problems with the servers at launch, like socom had.

HighDefinition6312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

I guess Insomniac helped out alot w/ things like that, they know how to make NO LAG MP games., like it`s goin out of style. I remember hearing Insomniac was helping them anyway. And your right COD4 players are gonna eat this up.

sonarus6312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

I don't know if the multiplayer will be that addictive. With the onslaught of good multiplayer games this generation has dropped upon our laps, its hard to stick to one game.

Halo 3 and COD4 are the only games this gen that have stood the test of time. Warhawk died off when COD4 came along. KZ2 will be great fun for sometime but more likely until the next game comes out.

All in all a good review. Guerilla games really stepped up their game to deliver an excellent shooter into our hands

GWAVE6312d ago

Their reasons for the 8.75 are a bit out of place. I'm not complaining about the score, since anything above an 8/10 is great, IMO. It's just that their reasoning doesn't match up.

Maybe I'm not reading it right, but their main reason for knocking the score is because KZ2 "doesn't do a whole lot new" (which is odd, considering the Clan system, seamless mission-to-mission multiplayer transition, and cover system are all new) yet that's it. Usually a game is knocked for being boring, glitchy, or for having bad graphics. Very few games actually do something "new" when you really sit down and think about it, so why is this new criteria invented for Killzone 2?

Just curious...

Aquanox6312d ago

Dark Sector is a clear example of a game knocked up (a lot) for not being innovative.

It's a compilation of great games, mainly reminiscent of Gears 1. Therefore, it received an score in accordance despite being technically great. Of course it wasn't in the level of Killzone 2 but the score knock off was also immensely bigger.

Close_Second6312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

How exactly did Insomniac deliver leg free multiplayer?

I live in New Zealand and there is no option to only search for or play in games being hosted in my part of the world (i.e. New Zealand and Australia). As a result, its a lag fest.

COD4, Battlefield: Bad Company, COD:WAW and Resistance 2 all have what 'd consider to be sub-par console lobby systems. The Halo 3 lobby still provides a shining example of how it should be done.

I appreciate that game developers code for the many and not the few however, why should I then pay full retail price for a game where the multiplayer component of the game will be gimped as a result?

KillaManiac6312d ago

@ Sonarus....apparently you didn't read IGN's PSN Online activity report they just recently did. Warhawk is far from empty.

darthv726312d ago

From playing the multiplayer beta to playing the single player demo...are there any graphical sacrifices being made?

Resistance 2 graphics in single player are better than in multiplayer and I can understand the reasoning. To keep the play fast and furious with so many people on screen some sacrifices were made to the overall detail.

Will the same thing happen for kz2 multiplayer?

HighDefinition6312d ago (Edited 6312d ago )

Sorry for you.......

R2 runs 60 players for me, like it`s nobodys business. Never seen a hiccup or anything. Same w/ RFOM w/ 40 players.

@darthV

I`ve heard it`s little to nothing. The only things that`s different between SP and MP is the cover system.

callahan096312d ago

100% disagree Sonarus. Warhawk didn't die with Call of Duty 4's release. In fact, it still has one of the biggest online communities on the PS3. I didn't even buy Warhawk until about 2 months after COD4 came out, and I got addicted as hell to it, and it had a huge variety of games running on tons of dedicated servers all day, every day, with tons of people playing it. I also think the style of multiplayer is totally different from COD4. It's third-person, and largely vehicle-based, health doesn't recharge automatically, and other differences, too. It's still my favorite multiplayer game on PS3, easily.

Sevir046312d ago

but to this day Warhawk is perhaps the most played classic PS3 game released all most a year and a half ago. the game is packed with plenty of online servers, it helps that they continue to update the game with patchhs and fixes and new expansion packs. Warhawk even beats out Resistance 1 who is still alive and kicking for Ps3 online gaming.

Tapewurm6312d ago

Throughout the years in Gameinformer, Reiner's reviews have been pretty spot on. At least to me... He has proven over the years that he knows his sHtuff when it comes to games. I know all reviewers have different opinions and likes/dislikes, but at least for me, Reiner has a keen eye and good taste when it comes to the games he reviews...whether you like his score or not...he is pretty much dead-on all of the time. 8.75 is not a bad score, but was the -.25 really necessary.. :) Reiner says 9.0....I will agree with him.

Aquanox6311d ago

I have just noticed that Killzone 2 has fallen from the original 95 at metacritic (with the first, exclusive bunch of reviews) to 92% - With the general, non exclusive reviews included.

This game seems like it's just going to be phenomenal. I can't wait to get it in a few weeks!

Spike476312d ago

frankly, I can't wait to see how they will review the next first person shooters this year when most lack innovation.

Tryst6312d ago

Very good point.

coming to thing of it, what FPS are coming on this year?

rhood0226312d ago

FEAR 2
The Chronicles of Riddick
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Shellshock 2
Halo: ODST
Section 8

inbfour6312d ago

a short review. But still a good score none the less.

Nineball21126312d ago

Based on what I've read, it seems that most others believe it's a bit better than that, but that's fine.

Based on all the positives listed, it just seems they would have scored it no lower than a 9 however.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX578d ago (Edited 578d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne578d ago (Edited 578d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro578d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken577d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown578d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72578d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken577d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya577d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast578d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood578d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro807d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72807d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_807d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga807d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos806d ago (Edited 806d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23806d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000807d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin807d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole807d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix807d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989807d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor807d ago (Edited 807d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

807d ago
Michiel1989807d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1111d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1111d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1110d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491110d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381111d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1111d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1111d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381111d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1111d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761111d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM1110d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301111d ago (Edited 1111d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1110d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1111d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1111d ago (Edited 1111d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1111d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1111d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
