NextGen Player: Killzone 2 Demo Impressions

I'm sure many of you out there much like myself have been wondering if the hype surrounding Killzone 2 is true. While I'll wait until the retail version is available to pass final judgement, I did have a chance to test out the demo. Allow me to provide my take on Guerilla Games' latest foray into the FPS segment with the brief 15 minute experience that the demo provided.

"As fun as Halo, better looking than Gears 2 and dare I say far exceeds Resistance 2. It’s a straightforward game that has been polished raw, spat on and then polished some more. A simple formula executed perfectly, with emphasis placed entirely on being a fun and immersing experience.

Killzone 2 ships February 27th."

KZ 2 FTW!

KingHippo196305d ago

I participated in the Killzone 2 beta and was impressed by how immersed the game makes you feel. The graphics on this game may be the best we've ever seen for a home console game.

ThanatosDMC6305d ago

Demo is so AWESOME!!! Tons of things happening at once anywhere you go to.

But i did run onto some glitches, but it is a demo.

Rico went below the beach flooring when he's suppose to come tell you and the other guy to climb the wall and open the something.

After the Helghasts breached through the roof and went down to the floor where all the propane tanks were, i through a grenade and a Helghast soldier ran towards the wall and through it. Then came back down from the railing above.

THE KNIFE IS AWESOME! GRENADES ARE AWESOME! I LOVE THE INFINITE MAGNUM!!!

Nathaniel_Drake6304d ago

Like I said before it is the epitome of what an FPS is as of this gen

Serjikal_Strike6305d ago

THE DEMO!!!!!and he still goes on to say its more fun than HALO and looks better GEARS!!

WOOT WOOT!!

Skizelli6305d ago (Edited 6305d ago )

He didn't say it was "more fun" than Halo. He said it was "as fun as Halo." If you are going to repeat something, make sure you get it right. This is how rumors and hype get started.

Regardless, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That said...

I wasn't too impressed with the demo. Yes, the graphics are effing amazing and there's tons of things going on at once, which is awesome. But looking past all the eye candy, the control feels horrible to me -- the aiming specifically -- and there is nothing in terms of game play that jumped out at me and made me say "holy sh*t." I think the multiplayer is where this game will shine.

I know I'll get disagrees, which is perfectly fine. I expect nothing less on a fanboy-driven site.

KingHippo196305d ago

I don't see any reasons why you should be getting disagrees for your comments. The most impressive aspect of Killzone 2 has got to be the graphics. Gameplay wise, from what I've played, seem pretty ordinary. I'm not saying the gameplay is bad, in fact I think it's quite good, but it's certainly not revolutionary.

Sarcasm6304d ago

Well if you guys were expecting the gameplay to take you out into orbit and drop you back into earth, obviously that's why you guys will end up a bit disappointed.

You have to look at it in a different perspective. Judge the game based on what it does well. And some of the things it does well is give you that satisfying feeling when you pull the trigger, seeing the helghast soldiers soak up every bullet and react to it.

Seeing the blood pools gush out beneath their death bodies, and then drying up over time.

Or chuck a grenade at a red barrel with dead helghast bodies lying around it, just to see it explode and they fly 30 feet away.

It's just the little details that like that makes Killzone 2 something very special.

Though of course you guys could argue with me that it's graphics. But graphics plays a part of the gamer's satisfaction. If Killzone 2 didn't look as good as it does, it wouldn't have the same sense of immersion.

So I hope you guys try out the full retail version and come with your conclusions base off that, and not the demo.

Happy gaming.

"Well if you guys were expecting the gameplay to take you out into orbit and drop you back into earth, obviously that's why you guys will end up a bit disappointed."

Shouldn't we though? If it's truly a next-gen game, I think we should expect nothing less.

"You have to look at it in a different perspective. Judge the game based on what it does well."

Graphics.

"And some of the things it does well is give you that satisfying feeling when you pull the trigger, seeing the helghast soldiers soak up every bullet and react to it."

GoldenEye.

"Seeing the blood pools gush out beneath their death bodies, and then drying up over time."

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.

"Or chuck a grenade at a red barrel with dead helghast bodies lying around it, just to see it explode and they fly 30 feet away."

Halo.

"It's just the little details that like that makes Killzone 2 something very special."

It's all been done before. Blood is in damn near everything now days, and even Doom had barrels you could explode by shooting them. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the game will be a blast for a lot of people, but I just don't see anything that justifies the reviews it's been getting... thus far.

"Though of course you guys could argue with me that it's graphics. But graphics plays a part of the gamer's satisfaction. If Killzone 2 didn't look as good as it does, it wouldn't have the same sense of immersion."

That only further proves my point. If it didn't look as good as it does, would people be just as excited to play it? Would it get the same review scores? Probably not.

"So I hope you guys try out the full retail version and come with your conclusions base off that, and not the demo.

Happy gaming."

I certainly wouldn't base my final opinion on a demo. Again, I think multiplayer is where this game will really shine. It sounds pretty fun from what I've read. After all is said and done, multiplayer is what you'll fall back on. I don't mean to spit on something a lot of people are looking forward to. It's just my opinion.

Happy gaming.

agree totaly than you....

ALIEN6305d ago

it does look better than GEARS and HALO. I don't know if it plays better, cuz i haven't played it yet. But from what im hearing it does.

KingHippo196305d ago

I play the Killzone 2 beta and had absolutely no problems with the play control. It's very similar to Resistance 2 (which had great control as well).

infamousinfolite6305d ago (Edited 6305d ago )

Man I can't wait for killzone to come out day one for me

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX567d ago (Edited 567d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne567d ago (Edited 567d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro567d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken567d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown567d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72567d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken567d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya566d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast567d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood567d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro796d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72796d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_796d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga796d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos796d ago (Edited 796d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23796d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000796d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin796d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole796d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix796d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989796d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor796d ago (Edited 796d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

796d ago
Michiel1989796d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1100d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1100d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1100d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491099d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381100d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1100d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1100d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381100d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1100d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761100d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM1100d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301100d ago (Edited 1100d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1100d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1100d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1100d ago (Edited 1100d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1100d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1100d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
