Mirror's Edge, Dead Space Break 1 Million

During a conference call today, EA CFO Eric Brown noted that both EA Redwood Shores' Dead Space and DICE's Mirror's Edge sold over one million copies each in 2008.

The figure includes for all versions of the games released last year. The action-horror shooter Dead Space was available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, while the first-person parkour game Mirror's Edge hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.

A PC version of Mirror's Edge followed the console editions in mid-January.

Not really great, is it?

More people need to try out Dead Space.

GWAVE6317d ago

1 million for a new IP is good, especially if it's from a niche genre.

I loved Dead Space. It was one of my favorite games of '08. I look forward to other games in the series (already confirmed by EA).

Pennywise6317d ago

1 mil for a single player game with minimum replay value is good imo. But considering it is multiplatform, its actually not too good.

I wont spend $60 on a single player game unless it is special(uncharted). I usually go rent them. Replay value is a must for my money.

Blademask6317d ago (Edited 6317d ago )

if its on the PS3 its considered a massive failure. Even if it hits 2 million+.. not sure. I dont get the rules myself sometimes.

Karum6317d ago

I was about to make the same comment, the internet can be so dumb.

coolfool6317d ago

I won't/rarely pay full price for a game with a massive multiplayer. I don't like paying for something I won't use. This is mainly because my internet connection is rubbish (hate how multiplay = online play) and because I simply prefer games for the single player.

So if a game has a massive multiplayer and a good single player I will wait until it drops to a price I can justify paying for just a single player experience.

DARK WITNESS6317d ago

agree. i have been pushing Dead Space up all my friends A££'s and down their throats. it was my personal best game of 2008. i am glad it did good... the game put Horror back on the map !

its one of the few single player games i have finished more then twice !

can't wait for the next one... won't be buying RES5, i will just save the money for this.

Was the regenerator F$£king Pain in the £"£ or what !

The second time i came faced him in the room with all the other necro's, i had to pause the game and big myself up for 5 min before i could play it again. Dam that thing was nasty !

That's great news for both games. Although i'm hoping for a Dead Space 2 in the near future. The game was an absolute scare fest lol

cmrbe6317d ago

these two new IP's deserves their sales and more.

gdogg9796317d ago

Dead space was probably my favourite game of last year..it deserves every sale it gets..can't wait for the sequel.only played the demo of mirrors edge, but any new ip selling half decent is a good thing.congrats to both games, especially dead space!!

jtucker786317d ago

I agree. Awesome awesome game. My favourite game of 08.

R.I.P. Resident Evil. Dead Space has completely blown you out of the water and is the King of Survival Horror.

Maybe I'm not being fair to Resident Evil as isn't Survival Horror any more.

I don't see Dead Space getting topped by any other survival horror any time soon. Maybe it won't until Dead Space 2.

JasonPC360PS3Wii6317d ago

Dead Space is one of the most underrated and overlooked games ever made. If people just rented it and tried it I'm sure most would convert and buy it.

jtucker786317d ago

I'm guessing you are getting the disagrees because you have 360 in your name?

Anyway, your comment is right on the money. My favourite game last year.

DARK WITNESS6317d ago

i agree.... i don't think i have enjoyed anything that much for a long time. it was very underrated which really makes me sad.

was it just me or did anyone else think graphically it was one of the best looking games around as well. i mean the textures and lighting was really cool and the last stage at the end...... i loved it.

EA Cut Dead Space's Marketing Budget to Pour Into Mirror's Edge Due to Mock Review Scores

Former Visceral Games devs reveal Dead Space's marketing budget was cut in favor of Mirror's Edge because of mock review scores.

Knightofelemia512d ago (Edited 512d ago )

I wish EA would just release a DS2 remake. DS is my favorite horror game and DS2 is the best one in the franchise. But because DS1 failed to meet certain numbers EA scrapped the DS2 remake. SH2 remake was great rumors are Konami might be asking for another SH remake. The RE2 remake was great EA just needs to give it another try. But all they seem to do is shitty sports games that are no different from the year before. Change a few players, add different uniform colours, maybe change a team logo. Wash, rinse, repeat.

goken512d ago

Agreed. DS was great. But DS2 was even better. Would love to see a DS2 remake, though I would love to see a DS4 even more.
The problem with EA is they make easy $ from the slight changes to their sports titles like football FC games (whatever it’s called nowadays). People just lap that sh1t up.
Comparatively, games like DS which don’t sell 10s of millions, can’t sell them team player add ons and all the like, would seem a hassle to make and unappealing comparatively. Especially when you consider that most EA non sport titles haven’t actually performed well recently.

Dark Souls 2, Darksiders 2, Dead Space 2, Death Stranding 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

chicken_in_the_corn512d ago

The Dead space remake was so good. Better than the original. Shame they won't remake 2.

__y2jb512d ago

I loved the original dead space but the remake I just found boring. Game design has moved on and the game really showed its age, just small area encounters repeated again and again.

I bought Dead Space during launch window and I never bought a Mirror's Edge game .

Inverno511d ago

Then they went on to screw both games over.

UnbreakableAlex511d ago

I'd rather see a new and great Mirrors Edge than another boring Dead Space.

EA Japan Exec Criticises Japanese Ratings Board

An executive of Electronic Arts Japan has criticised the Japanese video game ratings board for allowing upcoming action game Stellar Blade to be released uncensored while EA's own Dead Space was banned in the country.

CrimsonWing69760d ago

He’s got a point. If a game is M-Rated, which is the equivalent of an R rating, I don’t get why you need to censor anything. The rating is the indicator of the content and the age appropriate. If it’s appropriate for adults… why treat them like children? 🤷‍♂️

Eonjay759d ago (Edited 759d ago )

This is about gore... not about anything sexual. And specifically I think it is about the realistic depiction of gore. Unfortunately I don't know the nuance of the CERO board or how it is relevant their specific culture (as a prohibition on gore may transcend age) so I hesitate to make a statement. Can anyone else provide insight to what kind of gore is considered unacceptable?

CrimsonWing69759d ago (Edited 759d ago )

Yea, I know this is about gore, but thanks for pointing that out.

My point still stands, if a game is essentially rated for a mature audience then why censor for them as if they’re too young to view it? Makes no sense.

To answer your question: Decapitation, dismemberment, like… anything gore. They have been censoring that since CERO was established. Look up RE4 chainsaw decapitation or any MK games that made it there.

Cacabunga759d ago

EA Japan? Wtf never heard of that

ZwVw759d ago

Yet, the Oneechanbara series (y'know, the game with half-naked samurai females slicing up zombies to bloody pieces) get released in Japan uncensored.

The CERO ratings board is an equilibrium.

Smellsforfree758d ago

This confuses me since I've seen so many gory Japanese movies and anime. For example, Battle Royale.

gold_drake759d ago

definitely has a point.

but .. its japan. are we really surprised?

VersusDMC759d ago

I don't know if the EA executive is going off the one close up of an arm being cut off in the demo. Maybe it's uncensored because it's the arm of a cyborg or it doesn't happen that often (didn’t see EVE dismemberment when killed in the demo) .

In the states there's a certain amount of swear words allowed to a PG13 movie before it is deemed R. So maybe it's the same in Japan for gore?

Eonjay759d ago

Yes I think you may be on to something. The violence is gory but I wouldn't call it gruesome.

Retroman759d ago

Ea Japan please make Knack 3
in the future

Eonjay759d ago (Edited 759d ago )

Does EA Japan actually make games at all? Or are they just a regional publisher?

Retroman758d ago

I'm sorry Japan Studio made Knack
