Then and Now: Resident Evil

Capcom's survival horror series has gone from an above-average Alone In the Dark clone in 1996 to a fully realized action/adventure series, culminating with 2005's Resident Evil 4. This March, it'll evolve again with Resident Evil 5. In this week's Then and Now, GameDaily looks at how much the franchise changed.

RE was OK,RE2 was great,RE3 nemesis was crap and RE4 was the best of them all.

Now as for RE5,its more of an evolution of RE4 than something completely original.just my opinion

Marcelles256327d ago

totally agree
on the other hand look at picture 18 then 19 that guy was taking his vitamins

its ironic that the first resident evil game i played and loved was RE4 and am really looking forward to RE5 yet so many people who started off with the very first game are now abandoning it lol. I am glad i joined the party at number 4.

UnwanteDreamz6327d ago

I really enjoyed RE4 but I am one of those people who has drifted from the series to the point where I will not purchase this one at launch. I am sure it will be a great game but for fans of the older games it is a weird situation. The only way I can explain it is like this.

Playing new RE (when you are a fan of the old) games is like reconnecting with a long lost friend who has recently gone through a sex change. It all seems familiar but something is missing and very different. You still have fun together but it just isnt the same.

Kushan6327d ago

I really enjoyed 4, but 2 is still my favourite of them all. I could play that game with my eyes closed.
I kinda wish they'd re-release it for the DS like they did the first one, just so I'd have an excuse to play it again. Hell, I'd love a remake of it, but that'll never happen.

BadboyCivic6327d ago

i just hope the game is not all daytime, there is nothing like a good creepy night time setting.ive been playing first person shooters for some time now so anything that pops out at me in the daytime is sure to get killed.

Rayko6327d ago

First Resident evil game was one of the best games ever created, second one is on spot number 2nd. Third part was crap, code veronica was OK, RE4 was an action game and for me not Resident evil anymore. RE5 looks and plays like James Bond (I know, I just played the demo). So it is for me really sad to see Resident evil turning from a great horror and zombie game to a boring action game which we see plenty of today.

dylandurden6327d ago

"Above average" my ass.

The first Resident Evil was a fuc*ing masterpiece. RE 5, is not.

beavis4play6327d ago

RE2 was a classic as well.

i've just finished with the RE5 demo. messed with it for about an hour.........and it was a huuuuuuuuuuge disappointment. character models were good but enviroments were a joke. the controls? some of the worst i've ever used. and what's with the "pseudo zombies"? they run at you fast in the cut scene and then they move slow when they get close!!?? WTF!
capcom, bring back shinji mikami and "survival horror"......and make things right.
this new mess shouldn't even be allowed to go by the name RE.

Capcom's willingness to invest in experiments and scrap them sets them apart form many other developers (Nintendo have a similar methodology). Far too often companies push a game setting or game mechanic that is just not that good and the final product is middling or poor.

I mean 0, 1 and Code Veronica should be way before we get into 5 or 6.

Darkseeker132d ago

5 and 6 are so bad that even Capcom want to pretend they don't exist.

Levii_92132d ago

Dude Code Veronica is bad too but RE5 and 6 were mega successful and to me it makes much more sense for Capcom to do them instead. Nobody cares about Code Veronica except niche fixed camera era RE fans, i bet most modern RE fans probably don't know Code Veronica even exists. Based on all that i don't believe CV remake is coming but we will see i guess.

MehmetAlperTR132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Actually RE5-6 was not Classic RE game.. They are not even Survival Horror game.. They are just an action game with coop and named by RE... And for me RE Code Veronica was masterpiece.. I remembered the first time i played it in Dreamcast.. It was absouletly excellent game. And specially for RE6.. I was quit from game after the camera shakes when Leon's kick to zombies.. There's a video about RE6 and they are telling the truth about that shitty game https://www.youtube.com/wat... here it is.. Enjoy it..

Neonridr132d ago

people are DYING for a Code Veronica Remake. Not sure who you are talking to, but the die-hard RE fans of the series are very familiar with every entry. That's what it means to be called a die-hard fan.

neutralgamer1992132d ago

Levii

I am sure If they were to remake CV that it 2ont have fixed camera angle. I hope whatever they do they take their time like RE2/4 remakes and not rushed with cut content like RE3 remake

Before they should do RE5 they should go back and remake earlier games. In a perfect scenario we would get CV and RE/Zero before RE5/6

Tapani131d ago

Code Veronica on Dreamcast was absolutely AWESOME.

It makes more sense for them to remake earlier games like Code Veronica. RE5 is a good game though - it's not THAT different from RE4.

RE5 just doesn't really need to remade in general. The co-op element makes it tricky - you'd probably add more moments where Chris is by himself enhance the horror but some would want co-op to stay.

thesoftware730132d ago

RE:5 Was and still is a great game, with hands down the best Merc mode, that I still play from time to time with my brother.

RE:6 blah, I agree, it was awful.

Redgrave132d ago

Other than Code Veronica, 6 is the one ai want to see remade the most only because pretty much everything has to be redone; can't streamline that hot mess.

DarXyde132d ago

6 was pretty bad. 5 just tried too hard in being an action-oriented RE4.

In some fairness to Capcom, 5 was the first Resident Evil on then-new hardware for them (X360 and PS3). And it was pretty damn hard to follow up RE4.

Imagine everyone's surprise when EA of all companies dropped Dead Space.

Alos88131d ago

The first half of 5 wouldn't be too hard to do in the more grounded style the remakes have gone for, but the second half gets pretty silly and uncomfortable at parts.
6 is a wash. You'd have to basically make a whole new game to salvage that one at this point.

__y2jb131d ago

6 is garbage. 5 is excellent.

Hopefully if and when they do a RE5 remake, they give it the RE3 remake treatment, because this is certainly one title that I don't want a faithful remake of.

gerbintosh132d ago

I need a Parasite Eve remake
