Skip The PC Store, Custom Build Your Computer

PCEverything writes: In these economical times, many of us are now forced to actually give a hand in trying to figure ways to cut back on spending. Some people have even gone the ridiculous lengths to sit in the dark just to save on electricity. However, I think there are many ways to save money without affecting your personal lifestyle. Simply cut down on the expenses you don't need, focus on what you need and what makes economical sense in the long run, as well as choosing cheaper alternatives without sacrificing quality.

What about people that can't build their own and don't want to learn? What would you recommend?

JsonHenry6299d ago (Edited 6299d ago )

If you're not willing to learn to do it yourself then you are at the mercy of others.

And by that I mean find someone else that knows how to put one together and you order the parts.

I build a new one every year. It is EASY. Seriously, you would be surprised at just how easy it is. Putting legos together is harder than putting a PC together.

Speed-Racer6299d ago

Dude, you know how easy it is to put a PC together lol

I didn't know jack about PC parts and spent like 1 day on google and ended up building my own system a week later :D

Kakkoii6299d ago

@Kigmal:

It's not hard at all. And why wouldn't you want to learn? Do you not want to expand your knowledge about things? Just want to stay a stupid person who's controlled by people with knowledge?

It's simple to put together a PC. There's not a whole lot you need to learn. Just connect things to the only slots that fit them. Check the specs of a motherboard before you buy it and your other parts. So you know what's compatible.

There's a bit more to it. But a little bit of googling in between is all you need.

TheUsedVersion6298d ago

Its absurdly easy to build your own. Pretty much everything just snaps together. I'm sure there are tons of detailed guides on the net if you look. The only difficulties you might run into is with drivers and software but even that has gotten so much better.

TheUsedVersion6298d ago (Edited 6298d ago )

EDIT: The processor I listed is incorrect. I thought it said dual core but it is in fact a quad core processor. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz will add $50.00 to the cost of the system and an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz will add $200.00 to the cost of the system. This config does not have the same Quad 2.5GHz listed in the article as an option.

Its not always cheaper...

If you buy this configuration that Dell is currently offering you get an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz processor vs 2.5GHz, 4GB DDR2 SDRAM vs 2GB, 640GB HDD vs 500GB, 19" 16:10 LCD Monitor, Windows Vista Home Premium, and a 1 Year In-Home Warranty.

Seems a heck of a lot better than paying over $1200 even if you have to pay the $99 shipping. Or you can wait until they are offering free shipping which they offer constantly throughout the year.

DELL INSPIRON 518 $599.00
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor E7300 (3MB L2, 2.66GHz, 1066FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz (4 DIMM)
640GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
16X DVD+/-RW Drive
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Dell S1909WX 19 inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-Bit
Microsoft Works 9.0
1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis

Add from NewEgg:
XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB (video card) $129.99
w/ either Call of Duty 4 or Far Cry 2 FREE

TOTAL: $729.98

NOTE: Not sure how links work with custom configurations at Dell but if you want this one go to Dell.com. At the top, highlight For Home and select Desktops and All-In-Ones. Scroll down until you see Dell PC Deals on the left side and select Deals On Desktop PCs. Then click the Build Yours button on the Inspiron 518.

Building your own PC has always been the way to go. Hardware is always cheaper and you can build your system for your own needs. On top of that you can decide what you want in hardware and software.

DeadlyFire6297d ago

Custom built PCs are the only way to buy a gaming PC now anyway. You can't buy one from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or Circuit City anymore. Wal-Mart and Best Buy have some PCs on the shelves, but they are overpriced and always need a graphics card before you can play some good online games with them. You can buy cheaper from Tigerdirect, Newegg, and cyberpowerpc. Its not like a USB cable will fit into anything other than USB. PCs are easy to assemble. Motherboard may be only part you have to double check, but other than that all of the cables and parts have a certain shape for them so it all fits where it is supposed to fit.

Of course...especially in this economic fallout we are having..anyway you can make things cheaper is always a plus.

mirroredderorrim6299d ago

lol@me having the same pic on my desktop for Wii articles

I agree and in the same boat as Meep, except I still have some... faith.. in the PC market.

TapiocaMilkTea6299d ago

There are many cheap low end laptops nowadays, which is always better for the average users IMO, it may be a little more than desktops, but well worth it. Custom build is only for high end hardcore gaming desktops.

fezthabest6299d ago

I definitely disagree with you last part. Custom Build PC aren't jsut for the hardcore PC gaming, you can build a low end PC if you want. You can build media PC's, HTPC's whatever you need you can practically build it, its soo much cheaper than buying from store. Now the laptop part is great for average users who aren't into much gaming or gaming that have higher graphics.

I made the mistake of buying a laptop for University, which i barely take to UNIV. If I build a PC for the same price i could have had a high/mid end PC :( Now i have to carry my mistake until the laptop dies.

Speed-Racer6299d ago

Im never buying a custom PC again. Maybe a laptop though, but desktops will be custom built.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio1d 19h ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing1d 18h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster921d 18h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit1d 18h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing1d 18h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster921d 16h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Tanktopmaster921d 16h ago

Let me be clear. This is sarcasm
