Marathon Review - IGN

This ruthless, deeply unapproachable extraction shooter is worth every ounce of hell it puts you through.

So it turned out the game is great. Gameplay is top notch.

KwietStorm_BLM47d ago

Who knew that a game would be good when you actually play it instead of praying for it's downfall on the internet.

senorfartcushion47d ago

Nothing says good than “deeply unapproachable.”

jznrpg47d ago

People whine about the Souls games, Ninja Gaiden games, Nioh etc but that doesn’t make them any lesser.

Eonjay47d ago

Not everything needs to be approachable to be good. This also shows us that games can serve a wide range of clientele. Lets just say you aren't gonna hear a bunch of kids on the other end of the mic in Marathon. The people who do get into this are gonna be hoocked..

Been saying it for a while it's one of those games that will find it's niche community. It's not meant to replace Destiny which is more casual friendly. You don't often get games that are dedicated to a hardcore fanbase with this high of a budget

CrimsonIdol47d ago

This game had roughly the same budget as GTA 5. Do you think it was designed to be for a niche community? I mean you're right it IS niche, currently it's trading blows on Steam Charts just out of the top 50 in 24h peaks with games like Euro Truck Simulator 2, Hearts Of Iron 4, Rimworld that all have similar 24hr and all time peaks but I can't help thinking maybe they were aiming for more? Like having a higher peak than farming simulator 25 or something, I dunno. What do you think their ROI is on this game?

Eonjay47d ago

I mean sure who doesn't want more players and sometimes super niche games take off but this is definitely not a mass market product. Its definitely something they wanted to make and I hope Sony doesn't punish them for not making something more 'mass appeal'.

Notellin47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

"This game had roughly the same budget as GTA 5."

These two numbers are not estimated to be anywhere close to each other. How much YouTube trash do you watch daily, telling you how you should think and feel all the time?

I feel bad for people who need influencers to help them form their own opinions.

S2Killinit47d ago

I think depends on its longivity.

Redemption-6447d ago

The copium and lies you people spread is truly very depressing. Did you get those numbers from your daddy grummz? Seems all you people care about is to be told what to think from brain dead pathetic grifters.

CrimsonIdol46d ago

Oops here comes the butthurt.

CrimsonIdol46d ago

You're quick to point out that I'm wrong with nothing to back that up. So tell me Notellin and R64, what number do you put on the budget of Marathon? What I've seen points to $250+ million on development and marketing. GTA5 was apparently 265 million for development and marketing before release (though since its incredible success I'm sure much more has been since spent on content and maintenance post launch). I've also seen est. sales figures for marathon to be around 1.2m, most of which was on steam, the vast majority of which was the standard $40 copy, of which steam generally takes 30%. Insiders apparently say this is in the ballpark but given I don't work as Bungies accountant I do of course have to take some peoples word for that.

Let's say I'm wrong on all of those. Please give me Notellin and Redemption64 approved figures and lets try and make the math make sense so we can all be happy :)

And who is grumms?

Profchaos46d ago

No game is designed for a niche community but sometimes it only lands with one. The game is lucky to have a community at all.

You have to consider the budget for GTA v was massive in 2013 but that's over a decade ago and now it's actually standard for most of not all AAA budgets

Marathon PS5 Review | Bungie's Extraction Shooter Bet | Spawning Point

Bungie's PvPvE extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV in 2893. The gunplay inherits and refines Destiny's best-in-class shooting mechanics, heavy, precise, lethal. The extraction loop creates authentic pressure. The foundation is exceptional. The superstructure needs building.

“ Is it April fools day again?

The game is dead.

EDIT: the numbers are fudged. “digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data”

Does it hurt you to hear a SONY game was BEST selling ?
You gotta let go of those OBCURED feelings 🤷🏿

Neonridr24d ago

I mean the only reason MLB was the best selling title was because it was multi-platform. Likewise with Marathon. Will ring true for MS games. Only Nintendo titles are truly flexing their muscles when they chart as they are only to be found there.

S2Killinit23d ago

So that means we are going to act like it wasn’t best selling?

Neonridr23d ago

@S2Killinit - no it means that it was not entirely due to Sony.

VersusDMC23d ago

"Leading the way was MLB The Show 26. And while digital sales on Nintendo and Xbox weren’t included in the data, it still found its way to the number one spot despite only being on the market for two weeks at the time."

Don't let your nintendo bias get ahead of you and just lie...

It's kinda funny how this Obscure guy lives rent-free in your head. lol

Does Phil also live there?

jambola23d ago

you know when you hit caps lock you can turn it off before finishing a word right?
it's not a commitment

1Victor23d ago

I was typing on my old iPad with near full memory and it was acting up 🤷🏿

Outside_ofthe_Box24d ago

Can't wait to see how this is spun negatively. 😜

-Foxtrot24d ago

Yeah sure, yet the player count is no where near what they want for a AAA game with so much money behind it

Why people are trying to spin this game like it’s done overly amazing is baffling to me.

It won’t even be a blip on peoples radars by the end of the year .

S2Killinit23d ago

I really doubt that. I see it getting more and more traction.

ChunkyMonk23d ago

You must me typically wrong cuz those Steam chart numbers (AKA where the game sold the MOST) is less than what Hunt has, and Hunt didn't cost $500 million to make lol

Haki111223d ago

From the launch to now it went from 88k to 20k peak on steam that's like a 77% percent loss of players how is that gaining traction? Also if the people who are close to Bungie aren't lying PC users are the primary players.

terrorofdeath23d ago

by the end of the year? probably sooner than that

Soy23d ago

So........doing better than most expected, but not enough to make back what it cost.
