PSA: Switch 2 Update Adds Handheld Mode Boost, Here's How To Use It

Enhance your experience with original Switch games.

In case you missed, the latest Switch 2 firmware update (Version 22.0.0) adds the "Handheld Mode Boost".

As detailed, this feature will allow compatible Switch software to run "as if in TV Mode" on the Switch 2. Switch 2 can run in handheld in 1080p, while the original unit was 720p in portable. Nintendo has also shared a page about this new feature, how to use it, and some additional details about how it works:

This is a fantastic update!

would love to see them push an update like this for Switch 2 software. I realize that the battery would take a big hit, but for those people who might be using the device in handheld mode while plugged into a wall, it would be cool to get docked performance while in handheld mode.

That being said, this is a great addition for Switch 1 software to ensure it runs at its best, even in handheld mode.

The problem is that the Switch 2 version games already run at the handheld's max resolution.

Neonridr60d ago

I mean not necessarily true, framerates take a hit and resolutions are downgraded.

The problem is thermals. The dock has a fan. The switch uses a lot more power when docked.

I get it, but if I'm plugged into a wall in handheld mode it would be nice to run the game in a docked setting. I guess the handheld isn't designed to withstand the heat without the dock fan perhaps?

So in the options on the switch 2, it implies that this option only works for the original switch, not the switch 2. It literally says on the notes for the setting “some Nintendo switch software will be unaffected and this option has no effect on software for switch2”. Literally looking at it right now. So unless I’m misunderstanding the notes, I think the headline of this story is misleading?

Also be aware that it mentions the touchscreen may become inactive and that it will cause the joy-con controllers to be treated as a pro controller

Figured it out. It’s just not clear wording. It means it works on switch 2 but only for switch 1 games. Switch 2 games won’t support this feature. Bummer.

gold_drake60d ago

so, this update Only works on switch 2 hardware and is Only for switch 1 games.

z2g60d ago

Coo, l but bummer in practice that it only works on switch 1 games and your touch screen gets deactivated.

badz14959d ago

It's simply activating the docked mode for Switch games in Switch 2 handheld mode, that's all. Of course the touchscreen will be deactivated like when the original Switch is docked. We're you expecting Nintendo to go the extra mile and keep all the handheld functionality in this mode? For free?? Blasphemy! /S
