Retailers were always going to drop Xbox over Game Pass

Gamesindustry.biz opinion piece:

Losing retailer support is never a positive, but as Microsoft's strategy focused increasingly on Game Pass, it became an acceptable trade-off

well now they have no consoles selling and a mass exodus of gamepass subscribers lolll

peppeaccardo106d ago

The ByeByeBox is dead ... thank you Phil ... u got what you wanted from the very start !

StoneTitan106d ago

Did they just spend themselfs out of business?

-Foxtrot106d ago

Maybe there was a mix up with that email memo about “spending Sony out of business” and they thought it was about themselves.

crazyCoconuts106d ago

That was one of the best "if you didn't think MS was evil already" emails.
My favorite was the email where Phil reveals his career dream is to buy Nintendo. What a douche.

PapaBop106d ago

Now their own playerbase is going to drop Xbox over Game Pass. I thought Game Pass wasn't exactly sustainable in the long run but that is one hell of a price hike.

dveio106d ago

'Aggressively' is different from 'sustainable with perhaps some profit'.

Without thinking twice, Xbox selected the first back in 2019/2020 going forward in hopes to rush a victory over Playstation in 3 to 5 years.

It backfired massively. Even worse than Xbox One.

But make no mistake about it:

They don't sit at Microsoft with headaches.

They simply transfer the losses to their audience to whom they've promised beautiful landscapes, but knew they wouldn't provide enough water for in the first place.

It's only been an ultra-short business period of 5 years they knew they would either succeed or lose with the smallest possible own input.

The aquisitions were heavy in money, but zero creative energy on their own.

Xbox deserve everything that's happening. Because they willingly selected it in the first place and deceived their audience.

I'm switching to PlayStation. I always knew it was a possibility given the poor decision making but as an Immersive Sim fan having Dishonored, Prey, and Deus Ex Mankind Divided receive FPS boosts it was my favorite place to play.

I'll keep my Series X for those games but I'll never spend another dime on the Xbox store.

Now a question for the PlayStation fans. Since getting a PS5 years ago I have played Uncharted 4, The Last of Us 1&2 remasters, and then Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut. What should I play next from PlayStation studios?????

Travesty106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

The games on the catalogue are pretty good.
They got Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Spider Man 1, Miles Morales, and I think 2 maybe on there. Returnal is a good game, different and challenging.
Ratchet and Clank, some other titles on PlayStation Catalogue.
Also Ghost of Yotei came out today so I would recommend buying that.
AstroBot is a fun game too.

Notellin106d ago

Sheesh I'm grabbing a lot of these. Forbidden West, Returnal, the Spiderman games, and Ghost of Yotei.

Astrobot is one I'm grabbing because I played the PS5 demo game and ended up getting all the trophies. Also Ratchet and Clank because I loved them on PS2! Forgot about those games until now!

I've grown so accustomed to calling them "achievements" that it's challenging to switch to using "trophies" instead.

You had a few suggestions that no one else had thanks for the advice!

IRetrouk105d ago

Don't forget gran turismo!! Cheap to pickup now and lots of content to keep you busy.

tinchotin106d ago

Both God of War games
Ghost of Yotei
Demon's Souls

I think they are all in ps plus catalog

ziggyzinfirion106d ago

God of War (2018)
God of War: Ragnarok
Day's Gone
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Horizon: Forbidden West
Infamous: Second Son
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Insomniac Spider Man
Insomniac Spider Man: Miles Morales
Insomniac Spider Man 2
Order 1886
Demon Souls (PS5)

Notellin106d ago

Day's Gone has always caught my eye. Thanks for that one. I'm going to also get Forbidden West and the Spiderman games.

I actually borrowed a PS4 to play Second Son and I thought that game was really good so that's why I got Ghost of Tsushima!

Thanks for the reply!

crazyCoconuts106d ago

If you've never played Shadow of the Colossus or The Last Guardian, I'd recommend that.

And if you've never tried VR...

Notellin106d ago

I played Shadow of the Colossus on my PS2 as a kid until the disc drive failed 😂. I'm getting that game again on your suggestion!

Green-Smurf106d ago

I have both and I just canceled my xbox Ultimate subscription and picked up PS+. Most gamers cant pay both so they choose which one is a better buy. Xbox just made that decision easier

Chevalier106d ago

Bloodborne, Uncharted 1-3 & Lost Legacy, GoW, Spiderman, Astrobot and absolutely play Returnal. Especially Returnal, I am so hyped for Saros that I might start Returnal again. Lol

Notellin106d ago

I'm marking Returnal down for my list. Looks like something I'd enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yui_Suzumiya105d ago

Silent Hill 2 and World End Syndrome jump to mind immediately

Chevalier105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

"I'm marking Returnal down for my list. Looks like something I'd enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion!"

I will say I don't really play Rogue like games too much and it was a tough game to start for me. But once I got through the early portion it opened up. Something just clicked like wow why did I need like 20 attempts to get through the 1st boss?! The other bosses I beat on my first or 2nd try. If you ever need a buddy to co-op feel free to DM me!

Notellin105d ago

I bought Returnal and I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. I might take you up on that if I suck. 😂

Chevalier105d ago

"I bought Returnal and I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. I might take you up on that if I suck"

Rockstar launches official marketplace for mods

Rockstar has launched an official marketplace for "every server and every player" to buy mods: Cfx Marketplace.

I wonder how much of this isn't just taken work of others who have modded for free.

Edit: Also, great way for R* to take popular ideas and build them into GTAVI based on demand.

fr0sty11h ago

What I see happening here is, R* is going to ban mods in GTA6 UNLESS you buy them from the marketplace and R* then gets a cut of that sale.

ActualWhiteMan14h ago

Ah, perfect timing with them taking down the Bully online fan mod. Greedy a$$ company.

Christopher11h ago

It's okay as long as they get a cut of the money.

fr0sty11h ago

Expect R* to force it on you.

Snookies126h ago

Yep, right there with you. I'll happily donate to a mod creator if it looks really cool, or if I enjoy it. But expecting payment up front? Nope, not touching it.

IanTH11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

I'm not entirely sure how to read this, as it doesn't seem exactly like an exact parallel to Bethesda's paid mods shenanigans.

Rather than single player stuff, this appears to be aimed solely on Cfx Servers. From what I've gleaned, apparently Rockstar bought the Cfx mod team several years ago, coming a few years after weird contentions led them to ban a few of their members. Ultimately, the question is if they plan to keep this contained to only online/servers.

I have to guess to a degree yes. It'd be pretty hard to "force" paid mods for single player when modding files locally on your own machine, but much easier for servers they'll control. So perhaps this is their soft launch ahead of GTA6 online and they'll clamp down more tightly on non-official servers going forward? Ever since they've become a 1 or 2 property studio, I haven't really cared much for Rockstar stuff, so I'm not entirely up on everything surrounding this. Sounds like it has the potential to be problematic further down the line, but right now fairly easy to ignore...I think lol.
