Asus ROG Xbox Ally – The Final Preview

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally consoles launch on October 16th, marking the first time that Microsoft has released an official gaming handheld. The new ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X promise unique hardware and software improvements and could be priced aggressively, but can they compete against the Steam Deck, Switch 2, and a growing field of handheld gaming PCs?

Christopher241d ago (Edited 241d ago )

Steam Deck - $320, $550, or $650
ROG Xbox Ally - $600 or $1000
Legion Go - $650 or $1100
MSI Claw Ultra 7 - $950
Nintendo Switch 2 - $450

VPS2: "And yet you defend a $800 single purpose, non portable console…"
The only one defending anything here is you. Clearly. Also if you are talking about the PS5 Pro, I do owe it and I traded in my original PS5 so I only paid about $300 for it. That being said I fully understand that $750 is streep for a lot of folks and so im sure you can understand how a $1000 portable is equally, if not more egregious.

Eonjay241d ago

Few things. First I own over 600 games on the PS platform so no a PC handheld is not more valuable to me. For others that may be different but im willing to bet that an Xbox gamer with a similar catalog would find a Series console more 'valuable ' than a PC handheld. Also, on the PS5 I have access to around 8,000 games. So i wouldn't be able to live long enough to play them all... let alone 80,000 PC games.

CrashMania241d ago

Look at the alt desperately simping for a product that already exists, just with an Xbox sticker on it lmao.

IRetrouk241d ago

Told him ms would try transitioning xbox folks to pc and he would start capping for that exact thing.....he told me i was wrong🤣

And at 320 dolllars the steam deck is still the best pc hand held by a distance

PapaBop241d ago

And out of all of them, only one offers an OLED screen at a far lower cost. I honestly have no interest in portable gaming nowadays but after seeing a Steam Deck LCD and OLED side by side, I think it's the height of stupidity that companies are charging four figure digits for an IPS panel. If I'm paying that sort of price, I expect the best screens.

FinalFantasyFanatic241d ago

As an Steam Deck OLED owner, that screen is gorgeous, and it really helps hid the lower resolution/visuals of the Steam Deck compared to it's more powerful competitors, it's really hard to go back to IPS panels after using it, one day I'll get an OLED desktop monitor.

crazyCoconuts241d ago

I wonder for the people that do buy it how many will be under the impression that it actually plays all of their Xbox console games...

FinalFantasyFanatic241d ago

Actually not that bad of a price considering how much more powerful it is than the Steam Deck, and hopefully the new Windows OS features make it a lot more usable as a portable OS. I'd still prefer the Steam Deck because of how stupidly optimised Steam OS is, plus, I feel that the Steam Deck nails the control scheme and ergonomics.

InUrFoxHole241d ago

Idk if you play handhelds but is there a version you prefer?

Christopher240d ago

If I would get one, it would be the Steam Deck solely because it would play games on the device and I own games on Steam that I like to play versus Nintendo Switch and it's not ridiculously expensive. Neither Microsoft or Sony are capable of doing a portable device I'd be interested in since it's purely streaming or plays PC games at a price that seems way higher than I would need for what Steam Deck does as it is.

InUrFoxHole240d ago

@Christopher
I've had my eye on the steam deck. Gonna look further into it

Profchaos240d ago

Switch 2 presents far more value imo as it will be a target hardware platform for the next 8 years while PC handhelds here will not be and as PC games become more demanding they will run less and less games.

We're already seeing steam deck struggling with games built around ray traced lightning given the lack of rtx features available to it at the hardware layer

For 450 I think you'll have far more longevity out if it than you will any of the others outside of maybe the X by brute force of its specs but then again it's also double the price

Im gonna wait for Sonys ps6 hybrid console, and enjoy switch 2 until that happens.
Microsofts timing is awfull. Pure handhelds wont sell enough..hybrid consoles are the future.

gold_drake241d ago

i was about to say the same thing, haha.

their timing is abit .. i mean, late. when switch 2 and steamdeck exist. especially steamdeck id say

Software_Lover241d ago

I'm confused. Isn't this a "Hybrid" Console? You have multiple storefronts. You can stream or install. You can connect to your monitor/television. You could probably even install switch 2 games on it :)

Profchaos240d ago

Portable PC is probably a better name for it but retro was talking about the rumoured ps6 hybrid

Profchaos240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

That's where I'm at right now to I have the switch 2 and the ps5 as my primary gaming devices for modern stuff and it's often a challenge to pick which version of the game I want.

Do I want to have portability or better graphics
Fir tiny hawk's I chose portability for re9 I'll chose graphics

But a ps6 hybrid would remove that choice and I'm ok with it even if I just have the switch for first party and discount third party games at that point.

Hybrids are just so convenient as someone who travels occasionally for work getting on a plane and playing games natively is a huge advantage

IRetrouk239d ago (Edited 239d ago )

Sonys handhelds suffer from lack of support, kinda like their vr stuff, ill buy the ps6 but the handheld will be a wait and see, psvr1 and 2 plus the vita were a waste of money if im honest.

Flenter241d ago

too expensive and ugly. Just wait for Sony's handheld 😉

Reaper22_241d ago

No thanks. Sony handheld aren't any better.

Profchaos240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

Historically Sony handhelds have been incredible the only thing that hurts them is Sony themselves

No support, proprietary memory etc

The community though makes these systems incredible even in 2025 there's new and exciting homebrew for the vita to this day

babadivad240d ago

Sony's hand held won't be a PC.

Profchaos240d ago

When a handheld is a target spec that's locked in and can be optimised for over a extended lifecycle it will always beat a portable PC that may outclass a fixed platform for a year of two but they always quickly struggle as PC gaming surpasses them

InUrFoxHole241d ago

I was in at $800 but this is simply ridiculous. As much as MS has made off of gamers the greed can't be satisfied. Hard pass from me. More tempted to get a new monitor for BF6

Darkegg241d ago

If it’s going to be that much, they might as well include a dock and tap into the PC and tablet market as an all purpose computer system that can run office and such. I mean, my gosh $1000. Gaming isn’t adequate justification. And to the best of my knowledge, personally I love all purpose system but historically they don’t market well as to be blurry in target audience. Not quite for gaming, not quite for productivity. I do wonder if it can run video and audio, software heavy well? Like photoshop and editing tools. Think the specs are right there.

babadivad240d ago

It can do everything a PC can do.

Profchaos240d ago

It'll be a stripped down windows so who knows how far that extends at this point I'd say don't expect anything other than Gaming and you won't be disappointed

Profchaos240d ago

So many people talking about the superior nature of PC handhelds yet the entire oc handheld market combined sits at around 6 million as of earlier this year.

The switch 2 did that in a week.

If these systems are not selling Microsoft will ditch them like a bad smell and support will cease because it's Microsoft they always do that they are just as bad as Sony and their side projects like psvr2 or the vita

Point being if you really mustnhave a portable PC go for a steamdeck because at least valve has proven they will support it

Shiore2u240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

The Switch 2 did that in a week because it's a heavily closed ecosystem for the adult tech illiterate and because children exist. PC handleds exist for people whom already own a serious rig and travel, or as an all in one entry device for someone to get into pc gaming.

Profchaos240d ago

It's a closed ecosystem but everything just works and that's the difference like an apple product in a way you know what you're getting and you know not to expect anything more PC ecosystem is harder to quantify and there's so many more questions.

Shiore2u240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

@Profchaos
It’s not harder to quantify at all. PC handhelds are literally just PCs. Hardware, OS, storefronts, compatibility, benchmarks, all of it is very measurable if you so choose to learn about it. A closed ecosystem is a walled garden where you take whatever is tossed over to you. You don't know what you're getting, because half the time you see benchmarks and it's far less than what'd you'd expect despite marketing, and with no recourse. Just look at Silent Hill f. You can't tell me anyone expected that.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio25d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing25d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit25d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing25d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
