No freaking way. The regular PS5 is $50 more expensive than a PS5 at launch. A Series S is $150 more expensive than a Series S at launch and is more expensive than a PS5 Digital at launch... which is itself $100 more expensive than it was at launch. I know Sony and Microsoft may be launching new console in the next 2 years... but maybe it is better if they wait another year to get a cheaper entry point. That would give developers more time to get a grip on UE5....

"Xbox says the price increases occurred "due to changes in the macroeconomic environment," and adds that in the future, it will "continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and providing value for Xbox players.""

Meaning that thier solution to the price increase is to push streaming. This is not good.

Microsoft wants people off hardware and on platforms only. They'll keep making hardware, like they said they would, but it's going to be expensive.

Eonjay245d ago

I agree. I think this is their plan. But I think the biggest loss is that their hardware wont be competing by becoming a loss leader like previous Xboxs. This will wind up effecting all console hardware I think.

Michiel1989245d ago

and microsoft held the ceo of sony and nintendo at gunpoint and made them do the same.

Christopher245d ago

@Michiel1989: This is Microsoft's second price hike...

spoonard245d ago

And when no one buys less powerful, more expensive hardware, MS will then stop producing it altogether.

Michiel1989245d ago

ah so the 2nd price hike is evil gaming corpo wanting to go digital only price hike.If they really wanted to go purely only digital, why would they even come out with 2 consoles? I'm not argueing that they wanna go digital, basically every gaming company does because software is where they make most of their money, but these price hikes obviously have nothing to do with it.

InUrFoxHole245d ago

@chris
I heard theyre going to release the series x at the same price but disc-less

Outside_ofthe_Box245d ago

Anyone not blaming Tariffs are exactly why this situation will not get better for the next 8 years at least

Scissorman245d ago

people keep saying this but why? the vast majority of gamepass subs (at least 85%) are on console. if ms wants folks off console then what is the expectation of those players? to migrate to PC? to use mobile?

SonyStyled245d ago (Edited 245d ago )

@michael1989, software are the games digital or physical. Hardware is the platform/console/device the game is played on. Physical games aren’t hardware in case you’re mistaken, they’re a distribution method of software the purchaser has the right to resell…

ummm macroeconomic environment means "global supply chain" so thank trumps tariffs for probably fucking chip supply chain / costs. xbox is an American company but doesn't source anything from America. Japan doesn't have the same problem bc their PM isn't an idiot and they have better economic relations for chip/component/production/manu facturing, so the price increase there isn't so much production import costs as import costs for the unit itself to the US. Remember. 15% base tariff now on everything basically. Sony isn't going to eat that for you, and neither is MS. MS is just in a worse position bc it's American company feeling that self inflicted kick in the balls via tariffs. The rest is marketing spin trade off basically saying the hardware will cost more but don't worry, we'll off more value after the buy in. they can say that bc we don't have to import services. more control on pricing there. still fluff but the logic is true behind it.

Jin_Sakai245d ago

Thanks tarrifs. Worst generation ever.

Cacabunga245d ago

By very far.. nothing was right this gen

1Victor245d ago

@jin: “ Thanks tarrifs. Worst generation ever.”
I don’t blame the tariffs I blame those that voted for it after they knew on writing what they was getting 🤦🏿
Hopefully by next time things will change by the time the next console get a release date

slate91245d ago

14 year olds blame tariffs because CNN told them to

spoonard245d ago

@slate91

Many grown-ass adults don't blame tariffs because they can't think for themselves and have to be told by their political overlords what to do/think/say so they can feel like they can "own the libs". Even though what they vote for messes themselves up too. Case in point: tariffs and the removal of the minimus exemption are absolutely 100% the reason for these price hikes.

Outside_ofthe_Box245d ago

Yes it is tariffs.

Why are people saying that it's not because of tariffs? This is the first generation that prices have increased over time, 1st due to pandemic inflation and 2nd due to Trumptard tariffs.

Oh boy, people are going to be in for a rude awaking when they see the price for the next Xbox and PS6. Expect $600 PS3 levels that everyone whined about.

Gardenia245d ago

It's not the tarrifs. These price increases that the US now get has already been in Europe for months. It was only a matter of time before US would get them as well.

What on earth? 799 for a Series X with 2TB and the Pro price was tagged and laughed at the most expensive console ever 🙃 here in the UK there's sales on all PS models (digital PS5 for 339) It's like they actually don't want to sell any. Consoles are much more cheaper to make than 2020 and the Series X is $150 more expensive than then. Baffling

Deathdeliverer245d ago (Edited 245d ago )

There’s nothing baffling about it sir. It’s the Trump effect. Making America great again one raised price at a time.
You are in the UK though. Just watch the fireworks over here in the states.

andy85245d ago (Edited 245d ago )

Yeah but even with the tariffs. MS are a 4 trillion dollar company, theres zero reason for a console that came out 5 years ago to be $150 more expensive when it costs less to produce. They could eat this $50, they'd sell more units to make up some cost rather than look like idiots

senorfartcushion245d ago

We have our own middle class Maga flaghumpers causing trouble here too now.

They’re going to help elect our own version of Trump during the next election.

Deeeeznuuuts245d ago

picking up a digital for my daughter for Christmas at £339 before any more price increases, this generation has been very bizarre for pricing, I remember getting a GameCube for £99 back in the day at Currys, what happened 😂

badz149245d ago

I bet thsoe who laughed at the price of the Pro from the xbox camp feel pretty dumbfounded right now

shadowT245d ago

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio23d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing23d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit23d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing23d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
